Around the World in Eighty Days (Annotated with Biography of Verne and Plot Analysis) by Jules Verne Pdf

Around the World in Eighty Days was published in 1873 and features Phileas Fogg as the protagonist. Fogg, a noble Londoner who lived on Savile Row, had made a wager at the Reform Club, for £20,000 (worth over a million pounds in 21st century value) that he could travel around the world in eighty days. Fogg is a very careful and precise man who has just fired his manservant for bringing him shaving water that was two degrees colder than he asked for. Fogg has a new valet, Jean Passepartout, a young Frenchman, who is looking forward to a quiet life with Phileas. Around the World in Eighty Days is Verne at his most fun – there was plenty of comic relief in the novel. He was able to use his own experience of recent travels to provide background for the narrative. The book was finished under a punishing deadline Verne set for himself – not unlike Fogg’s deadline for circumnavigating the world. The book was the most successful in terms of sales during the author’s lifetime, selling 108,000 copies before his death. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne Pdf

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne Around the World in Eighty Days is a fantastic journey of an Englishman and his valet in 1873. The story is a comedy filled with exotic places, cultures and suspense along the way. Phileas Fogg, an Englishman, with his French servant, Passepartout, create an unusual couple with their distinct cultural origins. The journey challenges Phileas Fogg and Passepartout in many ways, but the two end up winning. Fogg and Passepartout travel the world to win a single bet, but they leave behind an incredible story of loyalty and friendship. The novel, published in 1873, is the fantastic journey of Phileas Fogg and his valet Jean Passepartout through the world. The trip is the result of a bet by Fogg and his Reform Club counterparts. The men insist that Fogg cannot go around the world in eighty days without delay. The men bet the sum of twenty thousand pounds that Fogg will not be able to return to the club, exactly at the same time, eighty days later. After accepting their bet, Fogg returns home to enlist his new valet, Passepartout, a Frenchman from Paris for his trip. Fogg and his valet Passepartout leave immediately for Paris by train. After he leaves by train, Detective Fix, a London Police investigator, insists that Fogg is the suspect in the Bank of England robbery. Fogg has no idea he's being sued for theft by the authorities. He arrives at Suez to have his valet confront Detective Fix on the platform, who tries to keep them in Suez. As Fix does not have an arrest warrant, he continues with them in Aden and Bombay. Fogg is not interested in tourism during his world tour, but Passepartout marvels at all the exotic sites. Upon arrival in India, Fogg and Passepartout travel by train to Calcutta, but encounter problems along the way. During their visit to the Indian peninsula, Passepartout offends certain priests in a sacred Brahmin temple. He saves Princess Aouda, the wife of a deceased Parsee Rajah, from committing suicide by force. With their new companion in tow, Fogg and Passepartout leave India for Singapore and Hong Kong. Unbeknownst to Fogg and Aouda, Fix accompanies them and now tries to stop them at all costs. He intoxicates Passepartout and leaves him in Hong Kong, while accompanying Fogg and Aouda on their dangerous journey from Hong Kong to Shanghai. Passepartout is able to board the steamer, the Carnatic, in Yokohama and happily reunites with Fogg in an acrobatic performance. On board the liner General Grant for America, Passepartout and Fix form an alliance to help Fogg reach London. Upon their arrival in America, they are attacked by a band of Sioux Indians, while Fogg attempts to duel against an insulting American, Colonel Proctor. Fogg is forced to go to the aid of Passepartout, kidnapped by the Sioux. On his return, he had already missed the train, and by the same consequence the steam for Liverpool from New York. He rents a ship and burns a good part of the ship as fuel to get through Dublin to Liverpool. When he arrives in Liverpool, he is suddenly arrested by Fix for the theft from the Bank of England. After being declared innocent, Fogg believes he lost the bet due to the last minute delay. Passepartout actually discovers by accident that Fogg miscalculated by one day. He wins the bet and finally marries his love, Aouda. Fogg not only wins the bet, but he wins the lady's heart and the loyalty of her servant, Passepartout.

Amazing Journeys by Jules Verne Pdf

New, superbly translated omnibus of five of Jules Verne's most renown stories. "One of the best storytellers who ever lived."--Arthur C. Clarke In one dazzling decade, French novelist Jules Verne took readers places they'd never gone before. . .the age of dinosaurs. . .the undersea realm of Atlantis. . .the craters and crevices of the moon. . .and a whirlwind aerial tour of the planet earth! Though he penned his unforgettable yarns in French, Verne plunked big parts of them down in America. And he himself possessed an American sassiness, nerve, and sense of humor, so Americans have returned the compliment: we've released dozens of Hollywood films based on his astonishing tales, and we've created the U.S.S. Nautilus, the NASA space missions, and other technological triumphs that have turned Verne's visions into practical reality. Here are Jules Verne's best-loved novels in one convenient omnibus volume, but with a huge difference. This book features new, accurate, accessible, and unabridged translations of these five visionary classics, translations that are complete down to the smallest substantive detail, that showcase Verne's farseeing science with unprecedented clarity and accuracy, capture the wit, prankishness, and showbiz flamboyance of one of literature's leading humorists and satirists. This is a Verne almost completely unknown to Americans. . .yet a Verne who has an uncannily American mindset! So these heroes and happenings are part of our heritage: Phileas Fogg chugging across the wild, wild west. . .the impossible underground journey of Professor Lidenbrock. . . the deep-sea exploits of secretive Captain Nemo. . .and a moon shot so realistic, it inspired U.S. astronaut Frank Borman a full century later. Jules Verne was a science buff with a showbiz background, and finally these classic storiess have a translator with the same orientation: Frederick Paul Walter is one of America's foremost Verne scholars. . . But he's also a scriptwriter, broadcaster, and part-time fossil hunter! Enriched with dozens of classic illustrations, The Amazing Journeys of Jules Verne will be a family favorite in every home library. Jules Verne was born in 1828 into a French lawyering family in the Atlantic coastal city of Nantes. Though his father sent him off to a Paris law school, young Jules had been writing on the side since his early teens, and his pet topics were the theater, travel, and science. Predictably enough, his legal studies led nowhere, so Verne took a day job with a stock brokerage, in his off hours penning scripts for farces and musical comedies while also publishing short stories and novelettes of scientific exploration and adventure. His big breakthrough came when he combined his theatrical knack with his scientific bent and in 1863 published an African adventure yarn, Five Weeks in a Balloon. After that and till his death in 1905, Jules Verne was one of the planet's best-loved and best-selling novelists, publishing over sixty books. In addition to the five visionary classics in this volume, other imaginative favorites by him include The Mysterious Island, Hector Servadac, the Begum's Millions, Master of the World, and The Meteor Hunt. Verne ranks among the five most translated authors in history, along with Mark Twain and the Bible .Frederick Paul Walter is a scriptwriter, broadcaster, librarian, and amateur paleontologist. A Trustee of the North American Jules Verne Society, he served as its Vice President from 2000 to 20008. Walter has produced many media programs, articles, reviews, and papers on aspects of Jules Verne and has collaborated on translations and scholarly editions of three Verne novels: The Meteor Hunt, The Mighty Orinoco, and a special edition of 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas for the U.S. Naval Institute in Annapolis. Known to friends as Rick Walter, he lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
