Bugs & Beasts Before the Law by Bambitchell,Sarah Keenan,Greta LaFleur,Marianne Shaneen Pdf

Bambitchell: Bugs & Beasts Before the Law, Appendix A-L (2020) is a publication by Bambitchell, the artist collaboration of Sharlene Bamboat and Alexis Kyle Mitchell, conceived in relationship to their experimental essay film Bugs & Beasts Before the Law (2019) that explores the history and legacy of the animal trials that took place across medieval and early modern Europe and its colonies in the Americas. The film follows events in which nonhuman animals were put on trial in courts, where they were prosecuted for various crimes ranging from trespassing to murder, as well as the related legal practice of deodand, punishing inanimate objects faulted for human fatality. This publication functions as an appendix to Bambitchell's film, taking readers on a journey through the artists' research. It riffs on the appendix from the 1906 book that inspired Bambitchell's project, E. P. Evans's The Criminal Prosecution and Capital Punishment of Animals, the first chapter of which is the foundational English-language text on the medieval animal trials. Using collage and intertextual layering, Bambitchell probes the definitive authority of Evans's record, creating a counter-archive that unravels the fictive unity of historical narrative. This layered narrative in text and image is about power performed through the body of the other, revealing how authorities and institutions mediate social relations and subjecthood through such processes as the formation of property and the criminalization of sexual difference. Various perversions of justice across time and space reveal that the absurd logic of the animal trials is not an anachronistic anomaly but rather an adaptive force that continues to shape lives unevenly and to define the bounds of freedom. This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Bambitchell: Bugs & Beasts Before the Law, at the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Fall 2020-Spring 2021. Texts include an introduction by curator of the exhibition Nina Bozicnik; the Bugs & Beasts film script; an excerpt from Greta LaFleur's "Complexion of Sodomy," a chapter in her book The Natural History of Sexuality in Early America (Johns Hopkins Press, 2018); and essays by Sarah Keenan (Mercer Union, 2019) and Marianne Shaneen.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green Pdf

THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Sparkling with mystery, humor and the uncanny, this is a fun read. But beneath its effervescent tone, more complex themes are at play.” —San Francisco Chronicle In his wildly entertaining debut novel, Hank Green—cocreator of Crash Course, Vlogbrothers, and SciShow—spins a sweeping, cinematic tale about a young woman who becomes an overnight celebrity before realizing she's part of something bigger, and stranger, than anyone could have possibly imagined. The Carls just appeared. Roaming through New York City at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship—like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor—April and her best friend, Andy, make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world—from Beijing to Buenos Aires—and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight. Seizing the opportunity to make her mark on the world, April now has to deal with the consequences her new particular brand of fame has on her relationships, her safety, and her own identity. And all eyes are on April to figure out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us. Compulsively entertaining and powerfully relevant, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing grapples with big themes, including how the social internet is changing fame, rhetoric, and radicalization; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring for the same dehumanization that follows a life in the public eye. The beginning of an exciting fiction career, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is a bold and insightful novel of now.

The Art of the Sister Chapel by Andrew Hottle Pdf

The Sister Chapel (1974-78) was an important collaborative installation that materialized at the height of the women?s art movement. Conceived as a nonhierarchical, secular commemoration of female role models, The Sister Chapel consisted of an eighteen-foot abstract ceiling that hung above a circular arrangement of eleven monumental canvases, each depicting the standing figure of a heroic woman. The choice of subject was left entirely to the creator of each work. As a result, the paintings formed a visually cohesive group without compromising the individuality of the artists. Contemporary and historical women, deities, and conceptual figures were portrayed by distinguished New York painters-Alice Neel, May Stevens, and Sylvia Sleigh-as well as their accomplished but less prominent colleagues. Among the role models depicted were Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, Betty Friedan, Joan of Arc, and a female incarnation of God. Although last exhibited in 1980, The Sister Chapel has lingered in the minds of art historians who continue to note its significance as an exemplar of feminist collaboration. Based on previously-unpublished archival materials and featuring dozens of rarely-seen works of art, this comprehensive study details the fascinating history of The Sister Chapel, its constituent paintings, and its ambitious creators.
