Politics of Human Rights in Southeast Asia by Philip J. Eldridge Pdf
The divide between the West and Southeast Asia seems to be nowhere more apparent than in debates about human rights. Within these diverse geographical, political and cultural climates, human rights seem to have become relative, and the quest for absolutes seems unattainable. In this new book Philip J Eldridge seeks to question this stalemate. He argues that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' inclusion in United Nations' human rights treaties could be the common ground that bridges the gap between East and West. Eldridge uses topical case studies and primary research from Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor and Australia, to compare the effectiveness of United Nations' human rights directives on local democracies. This study presents insightful research into a hotly debated topic. As such it will be a thought-provoking resource for students of human rights, politics and international relations.

Human Rights And Asean: Indonesian And International Perspectives by Kevin Yl Tan,David Cohen,Aviva Nabahan Pdf
Human Rights in ASEAN: Indonesian and International Perspectives is a collection of 13 essays that not only offers fresh new insights on the different facets of human rights and their protection in ASEAN, but also 'insider' accounts of the development of the ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission for Human Rights. These valuable perspectives have never been shared publicly, and offer a view from both the state and non-governmental organisations' (NGO) perspectives. In addition to these valuable perspectives, this book offers a number of significant case studies of how human rights has been implemented, and the challenges it faces in ASEAN in general, and in Indonesia particularly.

Human Rights in Asia by Thomas W.D. Davis,Brian Galligan Pdf
Does the increasing prominence of Asia also mark a new era for human rights in the region? This timely book uncovers the political drivers behind both recent regional and country-based changes to the recognition, promotion, and protection of rights. Human Rights in Asia focuses on the relationships between political regimes, institutions and cultures, and external actors, such as international organisations, NGOs, and business. The contributing authors provide important discussions on Burma, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Phillipines. Thematic chapters then go on to frame these individually focused contributions, by examining the international pressure to 'normalise' rights regimes, and the relationship between Islam and rights in the region. Providing a unique combination of country-specific and thematic analysis, this book will be a fascinating and beneficial read for postgraduate and undergraduate students in human rights and international relations, as well as scholars in politics, human rights, international relations and government and NGO analysts.

Democracy, Rights and Rhetoric in Southeast Asia by Avery Poole Pdf
'Southeast Asia has become a more authoritarian place in the last decade, so why do regional elites continue to use the rhetoric of democracy and human rights? Why have non-democratic states even worked to establish human rights institutions? Avery Poole's book is an insightful, accessible and illuminating account that answers these questions. It's a timely and very valuable piece of scholarship.' -David Capie, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand 'This book is very interesting and does an excellent job of addressing its core concern: why has ASEAN evoked the rhetoric of democracy and human rights and what does this rhetoric mean in practice? The author has put forward a clear and defensible thesis: the ASEAN states have adopted this rhetoric because it legitimizes their organization in the eyes of the Western world' -Shaun Narine, St Thomas University, Fredericton, Canada Southeast Asia is a vast, populous and diverse region. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) promotes democracy and human rights as central to regional order and cooperation, but most members are not democratic and have poor or questionable human rights records. This book explores why Southeast Asian countries have collectively adopted the rhetoric of democracy and human rights, and argues that they are motivated by their concerns about external regional legitimacy. It analyses ASEAN's references to democracy and the reality of backsliding in several countries; examines the adoption of human rights rhetoric; and considers the implications for how we understand regional cooperation. The book is relevant for students and analysts who are interested in regionalism in Southeast Asia and elsewhere - particularly given growing global concerns about liberal democracy and the gaps between rhetoric and political realities. Avery D.H. Poole is Senior Fellow at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University. She was previously Assistant Director of the Melbourne School of Government at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Indonesian Civil Society and Human Rights Advocacy in ASEAN by Randy W. Nandyatama Pdf
This book focuses on how Indonesian civil society organisations interact with ASEAN to shape human rights institutionalisation in the region. Using Bourdieu-inspired constructivist IR as an analytical lens, the book argues that there are pre-reflexive norms that dominate the field of interaction in the region that shape the way civil society organisations operate. This has resulted in the diverging advocacy practices, thus complicating human rights institutionalisation process in ASEAN.

East Meets West by Daniel A. Bell Pdf
Is liberal democracy a universal ideal? Proponents of "Asian values" argue that it is a distinctive product of the Western experience and that Western powers shouldn't try to push human rights and democracy onto Asian states. Liberal democrats in the West typically counter by questioning the motives of Asian critics, arguing that Asian leaders are merely trying to rationalize human-rights violations and authoritarian rule. In this book--written as a dialogue between an American democrat named Demo and three East Asian critics--Daniel A. Bell attempts to chart a middle ground between the extremes of the international debate on human rights and democracy. Bell criticizes the use of "Asian values" to justify oppression, but also draws on East Asian cultural traditions and contributions by contemporary intellectuals in East Asia to identify some powerful challenges to Western-style liberal democracy. In the first part of the book, Bell makes use of colorful stories and examples to show that there is a need to take into account East Asian perspectives on human rights and democracy. The second part--a fictitious dialogue between Demo and Asian senior statesman Lee Kuan Yew--examines the pros and cons of implementing Western-style democracy in Singapore. The third part of the book is an argument for an as-yet-unrealized Confucian political institution that justifiably differs from Western-style liberal democracy. This is a thought-provoking defense of distinctively East Asian challenges to Western-style liberal democracy that will stimulate interest and debate among students of political theory, Asian studies, and international human rights.

Dealing with Human Rights by Martha Meijer Pdf
Adopted by the United Nations more than 50 years ago, the practical application of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights remains far from complete. Human rights violations continue while politicians engage in heated debates about the definition of human rights and their universal applicability. Dealing with Human Rights features stimulating essays by four Asian and four European authors reflecting different cultural perspectives on enforcing human rights in international relations. This book is an important contribution to the debate on human rights and focuses on an area of the world where the issues have been contended most strongly. Book jacket.

Human Rights in Asia by Damien Kingsbury,Leena Avonius Pdf
This book offers a critical reassessment of the "Asian values" debate, which dominated the human rights discourse in the late 1990s, and a reappraisal of the human rights situation in Asia sincethen. In this book Asian and non-Asian scholars contextualize the "Asian values" debate and examine in what ways the issues raised then continue to trouble Asian societies. Human rights are seen both in the context of political developments in individual Asian countries as well as in relation to global issues such as the Global War on Terror. The book challenges the reader to critically examine human rights rhetoric and practice both in Asia and globally.
