Asha - I only desired what my friends by Pierpaolo Maiorano Pdf

A novel that deals with an extremely sensitive and topical issue: Teen prostitution, coercive or voluntary. It talks almost exclusively about the coercive form of the phenomenon; rightly so since it is the dramatic part and involves very young, unwitting victims, and must be opposed with all our might. However, we must not forget that there is also the voluntary aspect. A phenomenon that is much more widespread than we think among today's teenagers who, in order to get recharges, latest generation cell phones, rather than a designer dress or money, choose to sell their bodies... consciously. And not always, as in the case of the protagonist, driven by the family's precarious economic conditions. This is also to be countered, upstream. In the book, the two aspects intersect, proceeding in parallel, developing a dense, seamless, compelling plot. Asha is the third child of an Albanian immigrant family, in Italy for 20 years. Decent, honest, hard-working people, well integrated into the social fabric, but barely making ends meet. Seeing her friends dress well, have beautiful homes and everything they desire, while she is forced to wear shabby clothes and live in a dilapidated house, makes her feel envious. Drawn by a friend, blinded by the prospect of having what her parents cannot give her, she runs away and decides to sell her body to get them. This choice, however, while allowing her to fulfill all her desires, soon makes her regret not being able to have a life as a normal teenager, cultivating friendships, laughing, joking, falling in love. Sold to a criminal organization, segregated and forced to their will, she escapes several times, but is always found. Discovering that she is pregnant, unable to find the little boy with whom she conceived him, she attempts to make a middle-aged man, whom she met during one of her escapes, believe that he is the child's father. Having failed in this attempt as well, tired of running away with those criminals who give her no respite, she decides to end it all. The discovery of her suicide note, which she leaves on a coffee shop table, kicks off the story.

Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie Pdf

A Good Morning America Book Club Pick and New York Times Bestseller! From debut author Asha Lemmie, “a lovely, heartrending story about love and loss, prejudice and pain, and the sometimes dangerous, always durable ties that link a family together.” —Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Nightingale Kyoto, Japan, 1948. “Do not question. Do not fight. Do not resist.” Such is eight-year-old Noriko “Nori” Kamiza’s first lesson. She will not question why her mother abandoned her with only these final words. She will not fight her confinement to the attic of her grandparents’ imperial estate. And she will not resist the scalding chemical baths she receives daily to lighten her skin. The child of a married Japanese aristocrat and her African American GI lover, Nori is an outsider from birth. Her grandparents take her in, only to conceal her, fearful of a stain on the royal pedigree that they are desperate to uphold in a changing Japan. Obedient to a fault, Nori accepts her solitary life, despite her natural intellect and curiosity. But when chance brings her older half-brother, Akira, to the estate that is his inheritance and destiny, Nori finds in him an unlikely ally with whom she forms a powerful bond—a bond their formidable grandparents cannot allow and that will irrevocably change the lives they were always meant to lead. Because now that Nori has glimpsed a world in which perhaps there is a place for her after all, she is ready to fight to be a part of it—a battle that just might cost her everything. Spanning decades and continents, Fifty Words for Rain is a dazzling epic about the ties that bind, the ties that give you strength, and what it means to be free.

REVISITING THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA by P. Anand Pdf

A unique experiment by the author through a fictional story parallelly suggests an essential review required in the Constitution of India to bring in positive changes in the interest of the world. Today's argument of Judiciary, Legislature and Executive is that they are one of the three pillars or arm or wing of Government i.e Constitution are ordinarily unquestionable. A number of instances where Thrimoorthis, so-called professionals would be better understood by the common man through the three wise monkeys of Mahatma Gandhi "being dumb, deaf and blind". In other words, see no justice, hear no complaints of citizens and speak no regulations “Executives don’t want to speak, Legislators don’t want to see and Judiciary doesn’t want to hear". Inclusiveness can happen if the present three pillars of the Constitution are revisited and find scope to incorporate other important aspects of life. Seven pillars namely Legislative, Judiciary, Executive, Health, Security, Education and Agriculture required to be given adequate representation while revising the Constitution to encourage the participation of the common man. In addition, the fictional story of a family brings out human values of compassion, devotion and service to society by guiding readers to find an answer to the purpose of life. “THE GREATNESS OF PROPOSED REVISION IS IN THE SPIRIT AND THE INTENTION OF CREATING WORLD LEADERS FOR THE SAFETY OF MANKIND” Surgeon Captain Anand (Retd) “Contribution from AdvaySvaraPrema and family members”

Halo: Legacy of Onyx by Matt Forbeck Pdf

An original full-length novel set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times bestselling video game series! Molly Patel was only seven-years-old when the alien alliance known as the Covenant destroyed her homeworld and killed her family. As one of the few to escape the glassing of Paris IV, and despite the United Nations Space Command winning the war on behalf of humanity, Molly never forgot how much she had lost. Nine years later, when her adoptive parents—research scientists specializing in ancient Forerunner technology—are called to the mysterious and wondrous place known as Onyx, Molly vehemently objects. It’s not so much that Molly’s concerned about relocating to inside a spherical construct the diameter of an entire solar system, but the fact that she also has to live alongside members of the same alien species that murdered her family. And when the Servants of the Abiding Truth—a violent ex-Covenant sect under the guidance of the notorious Pale Blade—somehow makes its way inside this supposedly impregnable sphere, Molly is now forced to consider if she and her new parents have made a terrible and fatal mistake in coming here....

Bounded Mobilities by Miriam Gutekunst,Andreas Hackl,Sabina Leoncini,Julia Sophia Schwarz,Irene Götz Pdf

Mobility is a keyword of late modernity that suggests an increasingly unrestrained and interconnected world of individual opportunities. However, as privileges enable some to live in a seemingly borderless world, others remain excluded and marginalized. Boundaries are created, modified and consolidated, particularly in times of hypermobility. Evidently, mobility is closely tied to immobility. This volume features ethnographic research that challenges the concept of mobility with regard to social inequalities and global hierarchies.

Hydraulic City by Nikhil Anand Pdf

In Hydraulic City Nikhil Anand explores the politics of Mumbai's water infrastructure to demonstrate how citizenship emerges through the continuous efforts to control, maintain, and manage the city's water. Through extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Mumbai's settlements, Anand found that Mumbai's water flows, not through a static collection of pipes and valves, but through a dynamic infrastructure built on the relations between residents, plumbers, politicians, engineers, and the 3,000 miles of pipe that bind them. In addition to distributing water, the public water network often reinforces social identities and the exclusion of marginalized groups, as only those actively recognized by city agencies receive legitimate water services. This form of recognition—what Anand calls "hydraulic citizenship"—is incremental, intermittent, and reversible. It provides residents an important access point through which they can make demands on the state for other public services such as sanitation and education. Tying the ways Mumbai's poorer residents are seen by the state to their historic, political, and material relations with water pipes, the book highlights the critical role infrastructures play in consolidating civic and social belonging in the city.

Loss by Salman Akhtar Pdf

The experience of loss is ubiquitous in human life, but its nature and impact have great variations. When loss is phase-specific, expected, and accompanied by compensatory supplies, it can lead to ego growth. When loss is untimely, unexpected, and unaccompanied by environmental 'holding,' it becomes traumatic and needs clinical attention. This edited volume brings together a distinguished cadre of international contributors in order to explain the multifaceted and nuanced nature of loss from a variety of different perspectives. These clinicians, administrators, and writers delineate the great variability in the setting, antecedents, and consequences of loss. Development-facilitating and development-impeding losses are addressed and so are the losses that seem inevitable as one moves from childhood through adolescence and young adulthood to midlife and old age. Loss experienced by institutional organizations and war-torn societies is also examined. The book’s ultimate focus is clinical: it highlights the many technical dilemmas in working with grieving patients and offers therapeutic strategies aimed at ameliorating their anguish. Loss: Developmental, Cultural, and Clinical Realms will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists both in practice and training from a variety of different backgrounds.
