Asian Indians in Michigan by Arthur W. Helweg Pdf

Since 1970, a growing number of Asian Indians have called Michigan home. Representative of the “new immigration,” Asian Indians come from a democratic country, are well-educated, and come from middle- and upper-class families. Unlike older immigrant groups, Asian Indians do not form urban ethnic enclaves or found their own communities to meet the challenges of living in a new society. As Arthur W. Helweg shows, Asian Indians contribute to the richness and diversity of Michigan’s culture through active participation in local institutions, while maintaining a strong ethnic identity rooted in India.

New Americans by George P. Alexander Pdf

Americans have historically taken pride in their country's ability to benefit from the multiple talents and gifts other ethnic and cultural groups have had to offer. Unfortunately, that orientation has been tarnished because of the unbridled illegal entrance of immigrants, and the growing levels of the poorly educated among those of foreign birth. But a group of new Americans, the Asian Indians, demand our attention because they are distinctly different from most recent immigrant groups. This book provides the findings of pioneering research work about Asian Indians living in America. The author understands the internal pluralism of the Asian Indian community, and he introduces the reader to those Asian Indians who have become successful business people and professionals. The author presents invaluable data for understanding these "New Americans." He is one of the leading young scholars in the field of multicultural studies and Asian American education. New Americans is full of invaluable data for understanding the complex issues and possibilities of these new comers. Both the expert and the general reader will gain much from reading this insightful book.

The Other One Percent by Sanjoy Chakravorty,Devesh Kapur,Nirvikar Singh Pdf

One of the most remarkable stories of immigration in the last half century is that of Indians to the United States. People of Indian origin make up a little over one percent of the American population now, up from barely half a percent at the turn of the millennium. Not only has its recent growth been extraordinary, but this population from a developing nation with low human capital is now the most-educated and highest-income group in the world's most advanced nation. The Other One Percent is a careful, data-driven, and comprehensive account of the three core processes-selection, assimilation, and entrepreneurship-that have led to this rapid rise. This unique phenomenon is driven by-and, in turn, has influenced-wide-ranging changes, especially the on-going revolution in information technology and its impact on economic globalization, immigration policies in the U.S., higher education policies in India, and foreign policies of both nations. If the overall picture is one of economic success, the details reveal the critical issues faced by Indian immigrants stemming from the social, linguistic, and class structure in India, their professional and geographic distribution in the U.S., their pan-Indian and regional identities, their strong presence in both high-skill industries (like computers and medicine) and low-skill industries (like hospitality and retail trade), and the multi-generational challenges of a diverse group from the world's largest democracy fitting into its oldest.

Critical Perspectives on Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life by National Research Council,Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Committee on Population,Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life Pdf

In their later years, Americans of different racial and ethnic backgrounds are not in equally good-or equally poor-health. There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.

Asian Indians in Great Britain by Vinzent Fröhlich Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Cultural Studies - European Studies, grade: 1.3, University of Potsdam, course: The Commonwealth of Nations, 11 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In this essay, I will raise the question if the story of immigration of Asian Indians to Great Britain can be considered a "genuine success story". At first glance, no one would seriously doubt that. Asian Indians are the largest ethnic group in Britain and known as an "upwardly mobile people". They are successful entrepreneurs, restaurant owners and academics; as well as the inventors of the popular "British" national dish chicken tikka masala, which has recently "surpassed fish and chips in terms of popularity" (http: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/british_Asian). They are also important influencers of Britain`s pop culture, especially through literature and successful films such as Bend it like Beckham, East is East or the TV show The Kumars at No.42 (ibid). The Anglo-Indian influence on British popular culture (ibid). The biggest influence that British Indians have on British popular culture can be seen by the large number of Indian restaurants, most of which are actually run by owners of Bangladeshi origin. Chicken tikka masala has surpassed fish and chips in terms of popularity and become Britain`s most popular national dish, even though it is a British Asian invention which was not known in India until it was introduced after many British tourists had requested it. Although Asian Indians are a vital part of the British culture, they still have to face many obstacles; racism and unemployment as well as intergenerational conflict are amongst these problems. Asian Indians of Chicago by Indo American Book Co,America Indo Pdf

From the infectious rhythm of the bhangra dance and the sizzle of the tandoori platter to landmark achievements in research laboratories and corporate boardrooms, the Asian Indian presence has very quickly become a lively and colorful part of the daily life of the Chicago metropolitan area. Arriving in Chicago in the mid 60s, the first wave of Indians were mostly professionals who intended to return home. But as they stayed on and were joined by others, their population began to reflect the tremendous ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity of India. Today, Indians are the largest Asian-American immigrant group in the Chicago area. Recognizing that first-hand resources would still be available for compiling their history, the Indo-American Center appealed to Chicago area residents of Indian origin and to their organizations to select photographs and documents from their personal collections to tell the story of the community. This book is a result of their enthusiastic response. Here, then, is a history in the making, -the record, in pictures, of the life of a diverse and vibrant community as told by the people who live it and shape its course.
