ASIS Thesaurus of Information Science and Librarianship by Jessica L. Milstead Pdf

The ASIS Thesaurus covers the fields of information science and librarianship. Related and peripheral fields, such as computer science linguistics, and behavioral and cognitive sciences, are examined as warranted by the strength of their relationship to information science and librarianship. More limited coverage of other peripheral fields, such as education and economics, is also provided. The thesaurus is intended primarily as a resource to aid in indexing and searching within the fields of information science and librarianship. It has also been designed for students and researchers to serve as a guide to the terminology of the field. The scope of the thesaurus is limited mainly to topical subjects. Proper names of organizations, programs, etc., are excluded, and only the names of a few tools which are key to indexing and cataloguing practices are included. The thesaurus includes 1,316 preferred terms (descriptors), 691 nonpreferred terms (user references), and 37 facet indicators. Scope notes provide information about the use of terms in the thesaurus, as well as definitions of ambiguous terms. The thesaurus can be used in three different ways: an alphabetical listing provides the full record for each descriptor, including its BT, NT, RT, and UF references; a hierarchical listing shows each descriptor in its place(s) in thehierarchy of terms based on BT/NT relationships; and a rotated (KWIC) listing shows each descriptor in alphabetical order by every word appearing in the term.

The range of topics varies considerably, reflecting the dynamism of the discipline and the diversity of theoretical and applied perspectives. While ARIST continues to cover key topics associated with "classical" information science (e.g., bibliometrics, information retrieval), editor Blaise Cronin is selectively expanding its footprint in an effort to connect information science more tightly with cognate academic and professional communities. The Successful Academic Librarian by Gwen Meyer Gregory Pdf

The role of academic librarian is far from cut-and-dried. There are numerous job classifications and widely varying academic focuses and cultures to contend with. While every academic librarian is expected to meet the research needs of an institution's faculty and students, many are expected to assume other obligations as part of a faculty or tenure system. Given the many variants, library school alone ccannot prepare individuals for every aspect and flavor of academic librarianship, and intrepid librarians who find themselves in new places and positions face unique challenges. The Successful Academic Librarian is an antidote to the stress and burnout that almost every academic librarian experiences at one time or another. In its pages, Gwen Meyer Gregory and nearly 20 of her peers take a practical approach to a range of critical topics. Their advice, war stories, tips, techniques, and inspiration will help you thrive in your academic library career. -- from back cover.

Folksonomies. Indexing and Retrieval in Web 2.0 by Isabella Peters Pdf

In Web 2.0 users not only make heavy use of Col-laborative Information Services in order to create, publish and share digital information resources - what is more, they index and represent these re-sources via own keywords, so-called tags. The sum of this user-generated metadata of a Collaborative Information Service is also called Folksonomy. In contrast to professionally created and highly struc-tured metadata, e.g. subject headings, thesauri, clas-sification systems or ontologies, which are applied in libraries, corporate information architectures or commercial databases and which were developed according to defined standards, tags can be freely chosen by users and attached to any information resource. As one type of metadata Folksonomies provide access to information resources and serve users as retrieval tool in order to retrieve own re-sources as well as to find data of other users. The book delivers insights into typical applications of Folksonomies, especially within Collaborative Information Services, and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of Folksonomies as tools of knowl-edge representation and information retrieval. More-over, it aims at providing conceptual considerations for solving problems of Folksonomies and presents how established methods of knowledge representa-tion and models of information retrieval can successfully be transferred to them.

Rethinking Information Work by G. Kim Dority Pdf

A state-of-the-art guide to the world of library and information science that gives readers valuable insights into the field and practical tools to succeed in it. As the field of information science continues to evolve, professional-level opportunities in traditional librarianship—especially in school and public libraries—have stalled and contracted, while at the same time information-related opportunities in non-library settings continue to expand. These two coinciding trends are opening up many new job opportunities for LIS professionals, but the challenge lies in helping them (and LIS students) understand how to align their skills and mindsets with these new opportunities. The new edition of G. Kim Dority's Rethinking Information Work: A Career Guide for Librarians and Other Information Professionals gives readers helpful information on self-development, including learning to thrive on change, using key career skills like professional networking and brand-building, and how to make wise professional choices. Taking readers through a planning process that starts with self-examination and ends in creating an actionable career path, the book presents an expansive approach that considers all LIS career possibilities and introduces readers to new opportunities. This guide is appropriate for those embarking on careers in library and information science as well as those looking to make a change, providing career design strategies that can be used to build a lifetime of career opportunity.
