Ast Composite Wing Program: Executive Summary by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa Pdf

The Boeing Company demonstrated the application of stitched/resin infused (S/RFI) composite materials on commercial transport aircraft primary wing structures under the Advanced Subsonic technology (AST) Composite Wing contract. This report describes a weight trade study utilizing a wing torque box design applicable to a 220-passenger commercial aircraft and was used to verify the weight savings a S/RFI structure would offer compared to an identical aluminum wing box design. This trade study was performed in the AST Composite Wing program, and the overall weight savings are reported. Previous program work involved the design of a S/RFI-base-line wing box structural test component and its associated testing hardware. This detail structural design effort which is known as the "semi-span" in this report, was completed under a previous NASA contract. The full-scale wing design was based on a configuration for a MD-90-40X airplane, and the objective of this structural test component was to demonstrate the maturity of the S/RFI technology through the evaluation of a full-scale wing box/fuselage section structural test. However, scope reductions of the AST Composite Wing Program pre-vented the fabrication and evaluation of this wing box structure. Results obtained from the weight trade study, the full-scale test component design effort, fabrication, design development testing, and full-scale testing of the semi-span wing box are reported.Karal, MichaelLangley Research CenterRESIN FILM INFUSION; STRUCTURAL DESIGN; AIRCRAFT DESIGN; AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES; BODY-WING CONFIGURATIONS; COMPOSITE STRUCTURES; TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT; TORQUE; PASSENGER AIRCRAFT; ALUMINUM; COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT; FABRICATION; FULL SCALE TESTS

Failure Mechanisms in Polymer Matrix Composites by Paul Robinson,Emile Greenhalgh,Silvestre Pinho Pdf

Polymer matrix composites are increasingly replacing traditional materials, such as metals, for applications in the aerospace, automotive and marine industries. Because of the relatively recent development of these composites there is extensive on-going research to improve the understanding and modelling of their behaviour – particularly their failure processes. As a consequence there is a strong demand among design engineers for the latest information on this behaviour in order to fully exploit the potential of these materials for a wide range of weight-sensitive applications. Failure mechanisms in polymer matrix composites explores the main types of composite failure and examines their implications in specific applications.Part one discusses various failure mechanisms, including a consideration of manufacturing defects and addressing a variety of loading forms such as impact and the implications for structural integrity. This part also reviews testing techniques and modelling methods for predicting potential failure in composites. Part two investigates the effects of polymer-matrix composite failure in a range of industries including aerospace, automotive and other transport, defence, marine and off-shore applications. Recycling issues and environmental factors affecting the use of composite materials are also considered. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors Failure mechanisms in polymer matrix composites is a valuable reference for designers, scientists and research and development managers working in the increasing range of industries in which composite materials are extensively used. The book will also be a useful guide for academics studying in the composites field. Discusses various failure mechanisms, including manufacturing defects Reviews testing techniques and modelling methods for predicting potential failure Investigates failure in aerospace, automotive, defence, marine and off-shore applications

An Assessment of the State-of-the-art in the Design and Manufacturing of Large Composite Structures for Aerospace Vehicles by Charles E. Harris Pdf

The results of an assessment of the state-of-the-art in the design and manufacturing of large composite structures are described. The focus of the assessment is on the use of polymeric matrix composite materials for large airframe structural components, such as those in commercial and military aircraft and space transportation vehicles. Applications of composite materials for large commercial transport aircraft, general aviation aircraft, rotorcraft, military aircraft, and unmanned rocket launch vehicles are reviewed. The results of the assessment of the state-of-the-art include a summary of lessons learned, examples of current practice, and an assessment of advanced technologies under development.

Aerospace Polymeric Materials by Inamuddin,Tariq Altalhi,Sayed Mohammed Adnan Pdf

This book discusses polymeric and composite materials for aerospace industries and discusses some general qualities of aviation materials, e.g., strength, density, malleability, ductility, elasticity, toughness, brittleness, fusibility, conductivity, and thermal expansion. Metals and alloys have so far been best able to utilize their qualities almost to the maximum. The latest advancements in polymers and composites have opened up a new area of conjecture about how to modify airplanes and shuttles to be more polymeric and less metallic. Polymeric materials have been the focus of exploration due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, low cost, and a greater degree of freedom in strengthening the needed qualities. Strength, density, malleability, ductility, elasticity, toughness, brittleness, fusibility, conductivity, and thermal expansion are some of the general qualities of aviation materials that are taken into account. Aerospace Polymeric Materials discusses a wide range of methods with an outline of polymeric and composite materials for aerospace applications. Among the range of topics discussed are aerogel properties; polymeric welding; polymeric reinforcement, their properties, and manufacturing; conducting polymer composites; electroactive polymeric composites; and polymer nanocomposite dielectrics. In addition, a summary of self-healing materials is also presented, including their significance, manufacturing methods, properties, and applications. Audience This is a useful guide for engineers, materials scientists, researchers, and postgraduate students from industry, academia, and laboratories that are linked to polymeric composites.
