Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Observatory of Cambridge, Vol. 22: For the Years 1866, 1867, 1868, and 1869 The Transit Observations were all made by Mr Graham (g), with the exception 'of a few taken in 1866 by Mr S. G. Graham (s): the Circle Observations are all by Mr Todd (t); The Transit Instrument and the Mural Circle, as well as the methods employed in observing with these Instruments, have been fully described by Professor Challis in the introductions to previous volumes of the Cambridge Observations, and more recently in his Lectures on Practical Astronomy, Cambridge, 1879. An elaborate account of the. Northumberland Equatorial has been given by the Astronomer Royal in a separate publication; and in the Introduction to Vol. XI. Of the Cambridge Observations for 1838, pp. Xi - xiii Professor Challis has given a sufficient description of this instrument to render the Observations made with it intelligible, he has also given an admirable account of it.iri his Lectures. The Square Bar Micrometer is described at some length in the Introduction to vo]. XXI. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Observatory of Cambridge, Vol. 3: For the Year 1830 With increased experience, a more complete system and increased accuracy in the revision of the calculations has been acquired. And though I am certain that there are very few errors in the last volume, I dare pronounce with equal certainty that there are fewer in the present publication. Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Observatory of Cambridge, Vol. 7: For the Year 1834 The clock was constructed by Hardy, with Hardy's escapement: its beat is remarkably loud and distinct. The only alteration which has been made in the clock is the occasionally putting forward the minute hand. The original observations with the transit (as well as with the other instruments) are entered in small memorandum-books, in which the writing cannot easily be effaced: these are carefully preserved for future reference. The following is the explanation of each of the columns in the tabular part'of the work, and of the methods by which the numbers in those columns have been obtained. Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Observatory of Cambridge, Vol. 6: For the Year 1833 Tar: leading object in the following Observations has been (as in former years) the accurate determination of the places of the Planets, and the rigorous comparison of the observed places with the places given in the Berliner Jahrbuch. The increased instrumental powers of the Observatory have made these far more complete than in former years. Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Observatory of Cambridge, Vol. 2: For the Year 1829 Of the calculations for the reduction of the observations, a large proportion has of course been made by the assistant. They have always however, and in every stage, been revised in, some degree by me: and I consider myself responsible for their accuracy in the same manner as'if I had made them myself. That such a mass Of calcu lations should be' quite free from error can hardly be expected: but I, believe it will be found that the number of errors is very small, and their amount always inconsiderable. Astronomical Observations Made at the Observatory of Cambridge, Vol. 4 by George Biddell Airy Pdf

Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Observatory of Cambridge, Vol. 4: For the Year 1831 The focal length of the Transit Instrument with which the following observations were made is nearly 10 feet, ' and its full aperture 5 inches. The power commonly used is about 140. The wires are of silk fibres their thickness is less than 0' - 0 - 0 of an inch, and they subtend an angle of less than The screws which move the whole system of wires (for removing the error of collimation) have never been used after the wires were fixed, but the. Error of collimation has been repeatedly measured. It will be seen in Section 11. That it has had no perceptible variation. A micrometer wire parallel to the fixed wires is moved by a screw, one turn of which corresponds to of space, nearly. This wire is intended for observations of Polaris and sursae Minoris, being placed successively in positions differing by l, 2, 3 turns of the screw from the position in which it exactly coincides with the middle wire, and thus discharging the office of several wires at small distances. It is also used to measure the distance of the middle wire from a distant mark or the wire of a collimating telescope nearly in the meridian. In all these applications the reading of the micrometer head, at coincidence of the micrometer wire with the middle wire, is found by making it touch that wire six times, alternately on the two sides, and taking the mean of all the readings. The middle wire does not coincide with the mean of the seven wires and this difference is generally taken into account by using, in the reduction of the transits, a different value for the error of collimation.
