Atlantic Wall by Stephan Vanfleteren Pdf

During World War II, Adolf Hitler gave the order for a line of defense to be constructed along the coasts of the western front. Ranging from the French-Spanish border to the north of Norway, this Atlantic Wall is a series of bunkers, barricades and coastal batteries. Over the past year Stephan Vanfleteren photographed this 'wall' of more than 2600 kilometres in his well-known black-and-white style. He planted his tripod on various beaches in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, climbed cliff faces in France, sailed between the fjords of Norway and stood in the surf in Denmark to photograph the ruins of the largest military structure of the previous century. Vanfleteren shows with this series of photos his wonder for the untamed architectural beauty of these concrete structures and he shows the power of nature as it slowly reclaims these structures that were once considered impenetrable.

Surf Tribe by Stephan Vanfleteren,Cultureel Centrum Scharpoord (Knokke, Belgium) Pdf

- An incomparable new photo book about the international surf culture by Stephan Vanfleteren- Showcases captivating portraits of some of the world's surf iconsWith Surf Tribe, photographer Stephan Vanfleteren shows that there is far more to surf culture than just sport and competition. Surfing is also about a deep admiration and respect for the ocean, as well as the feeling of insignificance when confronted with the forces of nature. Surfers use the waves for fun, but also to forget and to battle, both with others and with themselves. Vanfleteren looks beyond the traditional borders of the United States and Australia and searches the globe for people who live in places where sea and land meet. He documents a fluid community, with nature as its sole leader. He has sought out young talent, living icons, and old legends, both competitive and free surfers. The photographs here are serene black and white portraits in Vanfleteren's well-known, haunting style; as always, he reaches below the surface and goes to the core of his subjects. Included, amongst many others, are Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, John Florence, Mickey Munoz, Filipe Toledo and Stephanie Gilmore. Surfer, journalist, and actor Gerry Lopez has contributed the Foreword. Surf Tribe has been exhibited in Knokke-Heist (Belgium), Kunsthal Rotterdam (Netherlands), Gallery Kahmann Amsterdam (Netherlands). The next exhibition will be in June 2019 in France. Present by Stephan Vanfleteren Pdf

Stephan Vanfleteren (° 1969) is best known to the general public for his penetrating black and white portraits, but in recent decades he has also made a wide range of documentary, artistic and personal work. From street photography in world cities like New York to the genocide in Rwanda, from facades and showcases to the mystical landscapes of the Atlantic Wall, from still lifes to penetrating portraits.0This year Vanfleteren turns fifty and he celebrates this with a large retrospective exhibition in the Antwerp Photo Museum and with the publication 'Present', in which he looks back on his fascinating career. "I was there, I was present," said the photographer, who always feels himself both an accomplice and a witness.0For 'Present', Vanfleteren made a wide selection of more than three hundred photos from his rich archive, some of which have become iconic images and others have never been published before. In extensive texts he reflects on how photography as a genre, but also his own work, has evolved over the past decades. He links that evolution to some major social changes.00Exhibition: FOMU Foto Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (25.10.2019 - 01.03.2020).

The Atlantic Wall in Denmark by Peter Ankarswärd Pdf

This is not just another book about the Atlantic Wall during the Second World War. This book aims to give the reader an understanding of the part of the Atlantic Wall located in Denmark, specifically on the West Coast of the Jutland Peninsula. How did the Wall fit in with the overall German plans? How was it built? The book will also explore the different alternatives the Allies had for an invasion of Europe and if the Danish part of the Wall in any way affected the ranking of the alternatives. Denmark is also the place for one of the most extensive fortifications in Europe, the 38 cm battery of Hanstholm. This battery will be explored, as well as the general strategic thinking behind it and how it was supposed to have worked with its counterpart in Norway, battery Vara.

Mechanisms of Life History Evolution by Thomas Flatt,Andreas Heyland Pdf

Life history theory seeks to explain the evolution of the major features of life cycles by analyzing the ecological factors that shape age-specific schedules of growth, reproduction, and survival and by investigating the trade-offs that constrain the evolution of these traits. Although life history theory has made enormous progress in explaining the diversity of life history strategies among species, it traditionally ignores the underlying proximate mechanisms. This novel book argues that many fundamental problems in life history evolution, including the nature of trade-offs, can only be fully resolved if we begin to integrate information on developmental, physiological, and genetic mechanisms into the classical life history framework. Each chapter is written by an established or up-and-coming leader in their respective field; they not only represent the state of the art but also offer fresh perspectives for future research. The text is divided into 7 sections that cover basic concepts (Part 1), the mechanisms that affect different parts of the life cycle (growth, development, and maturation; reproduction; and aging and somatic maintenance) (Parts 2-4), life history plasticity (Part 5), life history integration and trade-offs (Part 6), and concludes with a synthesis chapter written by a prominent leader in the field and an editorial postscript (Part 7).

Atlantic Wall by Alain Durrieu,Luc Brauer,Marc Brauer,Sébastien Hervouet Pdf

The Atlantic Wall : a name which sounds like a slogan, that German propaganda would use with advantage to present to the world the greatest and the most powerful fortification ever constructed. Pierced in a single day, the 6th June 1944, its utility and real value were, in the event, easily challenged, at once consigning the proud Atlantic Wall to a useless fortification for some, a mythical illusion for others. And yet, between these two extremes, the historic reality of the Atlantic Wall lies in the thousands of bunkers consturcted in record time along the whole coast of occupied Europe, from the north of Norway to the buttress of the Pyrenees in France. Some seventy years later, what remains of this gigantic fortification ? This book, illustrated with more than 1,400 photographs, maps and documents, takes the reader to Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, the Channel Islands and France, on a discovery of the most incredible remains

Bitter Music by Harry Partch Pdf

Now in paper for the first time, Bitter Music is a generous volume of writings by one of the twentieth century's great musical iconoclasts. Rejecting the equal temperament and concert traditions that have dominated western music, Harry Partch adopted the pure intervals of just intonation and devised a 43-tone-to-the-octave scale, which in turn forced him into inventing numerous musical instruments. His compositions realize his ideal of a corporeal music that unites music, dance, and theater. Winner of the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award, Bitter Music includes two journals kept by Partch, one while wandering the West Coast during the Depression and the other while hiking the rugged northern California coastline. It also includes essays and discussions by Partch of his own compositions, as well as librettos and scenarios for six major narrative/dramatic compositions.

The Atlantic Wall by J. E. Kaufmann,H. W. Kaufmann,A. Jankovic-Potocnik,Vladimir Tonic Pdf

This WWII history and visitor’s guide explores the extensive network of Nazi fortifications built to defend Fortress Europe. Hitler's Atlantic Wall, the complex system of coastal fortifications that stretched from Norway to the Spanish border during the Second World War, was built to defend occupied Europe from Allied invasion. Many of its principal structures survive and can be visited today. This authoritative guide provides both practical information for visitors and essential historical context. The wall, which was constructed on a massive scale between 1942 and 1944 by German engineers, forced laborers and troops, consisted of strong points, artillery casemates, bunkers, troop shelters, minefields, anti-tank and anti-boat obstacles. It also included the concrete U-boat and E-boat pens in the key ports and, behind the Channel coast, the V-weapon sites. This huge scheme of fortifications was one of the longest series of defensive lines in military history. This comprehensive volume takes readers and visitors through the entire story of the fortifications from the fall of France to the D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy that finally broke through. As a guide to some of the most impressive relics of the Second World War, this book is essential reading for travelers or anyone interested in the liberation of occupied Europe.
