Atlas of Endoscopic Anatomy for Endonasal Intracranial Surgery by Paolo Cappabianca,Alessandra Alfieri,Enrico de Divitiis,Manfred Tschabitscher Pdf

It is only recently that the use of the endoscope as the sole visualizing tool has been introduced in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery with its favorable related implications and minimal operative trauma. Of course, microscopic and endoscopic anatomy are basically the same, but the optical distorsion of endoscopic images is quite substantial compared to microscopic depictions. An endoscope lens produces images with maximal magnification at its center and severe contraction at its periphery. Nearer images are disproportionally enlarged and remote images are falsely miniaturized. This optical illusion may disorientate a surgeon who is not familiar with this peculiar condition at the skull base. This atlas acts as a guide through the endoscopic anatomy and gives detailed descriptions of the preoperative management and the surgical procedures.

Endoscopic Approaches to the Skull Base by Amin B. Kassam,Paul Andrew Gardner Pdf

Reviews the role of endoscopic endonasal techniques During the last decade the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) to the skull base has become a very powerful method to add to the array of neurosurgical technologies. This volume provides a broad overview of the role of transnasal approaches in a wide spectrum of skull base diseases. It starts with a historical perspective of the evolution from the microscope to the endoscope in endonasal surgery and then explores in depth the principles and techniques of the various methods. Discussed are topics based on anatomical boundaries: pituitary fossa to the suprasellar space to the cavernous sinus, clivus and the anterior cranial fossa. Access to the infratemporal and posterior fossae via both the endoscopic endonasal and the retrosigmoid approaches are reviewed. In addition, the critical topic of reconstruction following 'minimally invasive' skull base surgery and finally the learning curve and complications associated with the applications of these new and exciting approaches are discussed. This volume will provide the latest knowledge to help neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons as well as craniofacial surgeons understand the applications and practice of this important technique.

Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Surgery by Enrico de Divitiis,Paolo Cappabianca Pdf

Currently, surgical management provides the definitive treatment of choice for most pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas and meningiomas of the sellar region. The elegant minimally invasive transnasal endoscopic approach to the sella turcica and the anterior skull base has added a new dimension of versatility to pituitary surgery and can be adapted to many lesions in the region. In this multi-author book with numerous color illustrations the main aspects of the endonasal endoscopic approach to the skull base are presented, starting with a clear description of the endoscopic anatomy, the panoramic view afforded by the endoscope and the development of effective instruments and adjuncts. After the diagnostic studies, the strictly surgical features are considered in detail. The standard technique is described and particular aspects are treated, including the new extended approaches to the cavernous sinus, spheno-ethmoid planum and clival regions.

Medicine Meets Virtual Reality 15 by J.D. Westwood,R.S. Haluck,H.M. Hoffman Pdf

Our culture is obsessed with design. Sometimes designers can fuse utility and fantasy to make the mundane appear fresh—a cosmetic repackaging of the same old thing. Because of this, medicine—grounded in the unforgiving realities of the scientific method and peer review, and of flesh, blood, and pain—can sometimes confuse “design” with mere “prettifying.” Design solves real problems, however. This collection of papers underwrites the importance of design for the MMVR community, within three different environments: in vivo, in vitro and in silico. in vivo: we design machines to explore our living bodies. Imaging devices, robots, and sensors move constantly inward, operating within smaller dimensions: system, organ, cell, DNA. in vitro: Using test tubes and Petri dishes, we isolate in vivo to better manipulate and measure biological conditions and reactions. in silico: We step out of the controlled in vitro environment and into a virtual reality. The silica mini-worlds of test tubes and Petri dishes are translated into mini-worlds contained within silicon chips. The future of medicine remains within all three environments: in vivo, in vitro, and in silico. Design is what makes these pieces fit together—the biological, the informational, the physical/material—into something new and more useful.
