The Oxford Handbook of Singing by Graham F. Welch,David M. Howard,John Nix Pdf

Singing has been a characteristic behaviour of humanity across several millennia. Chorus America (2009) estimated that 42.6 million adults and children regularly sing in one of 270,000 choruses in the US, representing more than 1:5 households. Similarly, recent European-based data suggest that more than 37 million adults take part in group singing. The Oxford Handbook of Singing is a landmark text on this topic. It is a comprehensive resource for anyone who wishes to know more about the pluralistic nature of singing. In part, the narrative adopts a lifespan approach, pre-cradle to senescence, to illustrate that singing is a commonplace behaviour which is an essential characteristic of our humanity. In the overall design of the Handbook, the chapter contents have been clustered into eight main sections, embracing fifty-three chapters by seventy-two authors, drawn from across the world, with each chapter illustrating and illuminating a particular aspect of singing. Offering a multi-disciplinary perspective embracing the arts and humanities, physical, social and clinical sciences, the book will be valuable for a broad audience within those fields.

Textbook of Laryngology by Albert L. Merati,Steven A. Bielamowicz Pdf

Although many books focus on one or another aspect of laryngology, such as voice, swallowing, or airway problems, few cover the breadth of the discipline from a teaching standpoint. The editors sought collaboration from a broad range of international contributors in this text, which avoids the cover-all reference nature of extant texts, by having each contributor write in direct, consumable units for the reader, thus providing an ideal resource for both teaching and learning. Covers every aspect of laryngology without bias on one particular aspect. Designed specifically to meet student needs rather than trying to unsuccessfully serve multiple audiences.

Speech Pathology Management of Chronic Refractory Cough and Related Disorders by Anne E. Vertigan,Peter G Gibson Pdf

Cough is such a common experience that it in fact accounts for the largest number of ambulatory healthcare visits internationally. Most cases of acute cough resolve spontaneously, however chronic refractory cough is another matter. This is defined as a cough that lasts for longer than eight weeks, and persists despite medical treatment; and it is a significant health problem for many people. Often lasting for months or even years, chronic refractory cough has debilitating side effects including stress urinary incontinence, depression, poor sleep, headaches and reduced quality of life. Some patients resign from work and many avoid social situations. Even simple activities such as conversing or using the telephone can become distressing because talking can trigger coughing episodes. Although medical treatment is ineffective for chronic refractory cough, speech pathology intervention can be effective in treating the condition. Presently, there are no widespread education programs and material is generally disseminated through journal articles published in a wide array of literature and by word of mouth. This book fills the gap. It is the first manual available to speech pathologists to support their treatment of chronic refractory cough and to eliminate their reliance on conference presentations, infrequent journal articles and short textbook descriptions. Presented here are a comprehensive overview of the conditions, detailed outlines of therapy options, and qualified guidance on recent advances in this area that speech pathologists need and are looking for when treating these patients. With contributions from world leading clinicians, this is the first book worldwide on the topic. It offers a comprehensive overview of the condition, outlines therapy in great detail and consolidates recent advances in this area. It provides all materials needed for speech pathologists to assess and treat individuals and all practical resources and tools needed to treat the condition - supported with step-by-step instruction, clear and concise explanations, pragmatic advice on decision-making, and no less than 11 photocopiable assessment and treatment forms, patient handouts and more.

Injection Laryngoplasty by Giuseppe Bergamini,Livio Presutti,Gabriele Molteni Pdf

This well-illustrated book provides step-by-step guidance on the various techniques – microlaryngoscopic, fiberoptic endoscopic and transcutaneous – that can be employed for the purpose of injection laryngoplasty, a surgical procedure in which a foreign material is injected into the vocal fold. The anatomy and function of the region are first explained, with identification of the causes and means of evaluation of glottic and neoglottic insufficiency. Advice is then provided on the choice of material for injection laryngoplasty, including absorbable and long-lasting options, on the basis of careful analysis that takes into account both the recent literature and the authors’ own experiences. Detailed descriptions of the surgical indications and different procedures follow and for ease of reference, clear flow charts on diagnosis and indications are also included. The book concludes with chapters on the use of injection laryngoplasty specifically in the pediatric population and on postoperative care and speech therapy following the procedure. Injection Laryngoplasty will provide valuable assistance to all surgeons wishing to perform this kind of surgery.

Breathing, Speech, and Song by D.F. Proctor Pdf

I have attempted to prepare this volume in such a way as to provide a source of information on the normal physiology of speech and song as well as on the disorders of those functions. To the extent that I have succeeded it should be of interest to physiologists, physicians, and teachers and students of the VOlce. The book is by no means a text on laryngology, nor is it a treatise on the physiology of breathing mechanics, nor yet is it a manual telling how to teach or learn voice production. If none of these, what is it? It is a discussion of the application of breathing mechanics to phonation of interest to the respir- atory physiologist, of certain aspects of physiology and medicine of interest to the teacher or student of voice, and of the problems of voice production and its maladies of interest to the laryngologist. I have undergone a number of experiences during the past 50 years which I believe have qualified me to undertake this task with some special hope of success. In my youth I studied voice for twelve years with four outstanding teachers and performed publicly as a lieder singer, in oratorio, chorus, and opera. Later I trained for and entered the medical profession in the specialty of otolaryngology. Later still I engaged in research on the physiology of breath ing mechanics and phonation, especially singing.
