Atlas of the Neuropathology of HIV Infection by Françoise Gray Pdf

HIV infection ultimately results in a wide variety of lesions in almost every organ of the body. The classification and diagnosis of these lesions are often difficult as they can appear in a variety of forms and are affected by other opportunistic pathogens characteristic of AIDS. This volume is a systematic, pictorial guide to the lesions which affect the central and peripheral nervous systems in particular. The pathological appearances of the lesions are correlated with radiological, ophthalmic, and cytological information. The book also demonstrates the use of more sophisticated techniques such as immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization, and electron microscopic investigations in diagnosing and understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of these lesions. Although the later neurological complications of AIDS are covered comprehensively, the early neurological effects of HIV infection are also covered. The full range of lesions is surveyed, including rare and unusual pathological features. This major reference work will be invaluable to clinicians and researchers interested in the effects of AIDS on the nervous system. It contains more than 500 high-quality images in color and black and white, accompanied by commentary from internationally recognized experts.

AIDS Research at EC Level by Andre E. Baert Pdf

At EC level the fight against AIDS, one of the major health problems and socioeconomic diseases today, is also part of the specific RTD programme in the field of biomedicine and health. About 600 research teams are collaborating within 30 concerted actions networks that are underpinned by centralised facilities. For example, the epidemiology research networks are monitored by the WHO/EC collaborating centre in St. Maurice, France. Common experiments on animal models, antiviral screening, genetic analysis of multiple virus strains and provision of reagents for vaccine development are also centralized facilities in AIDS research carried out under the principles of subsidiarity and Community added value. This publication presents an overview of their ongoing research activities in disease control and prevention, viro-immunological research, clinical research and vaccine development. Covered by Current Contents, Life Sciences (ISI), volume 38, no. 19, May 1995, p. 11-12 'Therefore, for anyone doing AIDS research, this is a must volume to have in order to understand what the European Community is doing in AIDS research. Highly recommended for all medical and academic libraries.' - H. Robert Malinowsky, The University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. AIDS Book Review Journal, no. 27, June 1996

The authors offer critical insight into the medicolegal investigation of bodies found in water, the forensic aspects of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection of the central nervous system, deaths in a head-down position, and forensic bitemark analysis. Additional chapters address taphonomic changes in human bodies during the early postmortem interval, arrhythmogenic ventricular dysplaisia that produces sudden death in young people, the postmortem diagnosis of death in anaphylaxis, and iatrogenici deaths. The forensic aspects of suicide, murder-suicide, and suicide trends in the United States are also discussed, along with the evaluation of fatal pulmonary thromboembolism and the use of radiology in medicolegal investigations.

Neuropathology by S. Love Pdf

In commissioning this volume of Current Topics in Pathology, the editor of the series, Prof. Sir Colin Berry, asked me to produce something "which is aimed at the general pathologist but from the point of view of the neuropathologist who knows what is not being done well". This was easier said than done. Many aspects of neuropathology are encountered only infrequently in general pathology and are best dealt with by re ferral of material to a specialist unit. Others need more extensive investigation than is practicable in a general pathology setting. Yet neurological disorders in general are common and are encountered by general histopathologists, paediatric and forensic pathologists on a daily basis, particularly in autopsy practice. In inviting contributions to this volume of Current Topics in Pathology, I therefore biased the con tents towards disorders in which the conduct of the autopsy and the initial approach to neuropathological investigation are of critical importance in making the diagnosis. The authors all have a wealth of experience and expertise and I believe that this is reflected in their approach, which is both personal and practical. Indeed, the emphasis in this book is very much on the provision of practical advice. All of the chapters contain guidelines on the conduct of autopsies as well as infor mation on the macroscopic and basic histological assessment of the nervous system in the relevant disorders.

Greenfield's Neuropathology, 2-Volume Set, Eighth Edition by Seth Love,David Louis,David W Ellison Pdf

Greenfield's Neuropathology, the worlds leading neuropathology reference, provides an authoritative, comprehensive account of the pathological findings in neurological disease, their biological basis and their clinical manifestations. This account is underpinned throughout by a clear description of the molecular and cellular processes and reactions that are relevant to the development, and normal and abnormal functioning of, the nervous system. While this scientific content is of paramount importance, however, care has been taken to ensure that the information is presented in a way that is accessible to readers working within a range of disciplines in the clinical neurosciences, and that also places the neuropathological findings within the context of a broader diagnostic process. The new eighth edition incorporates much new information, new illustrations and many new authors, while retaining the depth, breadth and quality of content so praised in previous editions. Each chapter opens with an introductory section designed to offer an integrated approach to diagnosis, taking account of clinical manifestations, neuroradiological and laboratory findings as well as the neuropathological and molecular genetic features of the diseases being considered. Strong emphasis has been placed on facilitating the retrieval of neuropathological information by non-neuropathologists grapping with differential diagnoses or seeking information on broad categories of neurological disease, and boxes and tables are used to present important symptoms and signs, patterns of disease and other features for ease of reference. High quality line and photographic illustrations, the majority in full colour, are all available on a companion CD, to complete the offering.
