An exact solution of the problem of designing an airfoil with a prescribed velocity distribution on the suction surface in a given uniform flow of an incompressible perfect liquid is obtained by replacing the boundary of the airfoil by vortices. By this device, a method of solution is developed, which is applicable both to isolated airfoils and to airfoils in cascade. The conformal transformation of the designed airfoil into a circle can then be obtained and the velocity distribution at any angle of attack computed. Numerical illustrations of the method are given for the airfoil in cascade.

An experimental investigation of stall propagation in a stationary circular cascade in which high-speed schlieren and interferometer photography is used is described. This investigation suggests an analytical approach to the study of stall propagation which is valid only for an isolated blade row in an infinite flow field but which is not restricted to small unsteady perturbations or to an assumed simplified cascade geometry. Conditions necessary for the existence of the assumed type of stall cells are described and equations are derived for the velocity of stall-cell propagation.

An exact treatment of the problem of finding the incompressible, inviscid two-dimensional flow around two cascades in tandem is presented. The analysis includes solutions of both the direct and the inverse problems. These problems are solved by conformally mapping the tandem cascade onto the region between two concentric circles in which region there are suitably placed flow singularities. Formulas for the velocity and the potential in the annular region are presented in a closed form by means of elliptic functions. The equations are presented in a form suitable for computation.

Two-dimensional Compressible Flow in Centrifugal Compressors with Straight Blades by John D. Stanitz,Gaylord O. Ellis Pdf

Six numerical examples are presented for steady, two-dimensional, compressible, nonviscous flow in centrifugal compressors with straight blades. A seventh example is presented for incompressible flow. The solutions also applye to radial-flow turbines with rotation and flow direction reversed. The effects of variations in following parameters were investigated: (1) flow rate, (2) impeller-tip speed, (3) variation of passage height with radius, and (4) number of blades. The numerical results are presented in plots of the streamlines, constant Mach number lines, and constant pressure-ratio lines. Correlation equations are developed whereby the flow conditions in any impeller with straight blades can be determined for all operating conditions.
