Betty Leicester: A Story for Girls by Sarah Orne Jewett Pdf

When Mr. Leicester decided his Alaskan trip was too dangerous for his daughter, he encouraged Betty to pick her own location to summer in. Having been to many countries and cities, Betty had to think it over. When she realizes just how much she is going to miss her father, Betty finds her answer. If she cannot spend the summer with her father, she will spend it with extended family. After years of begging Betty and her father to visit, Aunt Barbra and Mary are excited to host Betty in their New England home. Bright and kind, Betty influences everyone she meets, but as she enjoys her summer of new adventures, she can’t help but be caught between her identity as an adult, and her child-like wonder. As a well-traveled young woman, Betty has experience that is uncommon for her age. Yet, in all the places she’s visited, no region was more impressionable than New England. Views of a gorgeous countryside and the Atlantic coast contrast with the depressing social conditions of her aunts’ home village. Happy to be of any help, Betty lifts the spirits of every townsperson she meets as she listens to their story and tries to make sense of her own. First published in 1889, Sarah Orne Jewett wrote Betty Leicester: A Story for Girls intentionally for an audience of young women. Knowing that there were not many books suited specifically for young women at time, Jewett was dedicated to creating a character and story that young girls could relate to. Despite its target audience, Betty Leicester: A Story for Girls continues to be enjoyed by a wide audience. With a slice-of-life narrative, the compelling characterization of Betty as she comes of age, and intricate description of the setting, this Sarah Orne Jewett work is sweet and wholesome. This edition of Betty Leicester: A Story for Girls by Sarah Orne Jewett features an eye-catching new cover design and is presented in a font that is both modern and readable. With these accommodations, this edition is accessible and appealing to contemporary audiences, restoring Betty Leicester: A Story for Girls to modern standards while preserving the original genius and beauty of Sarah Orne Jewett’s work.

Hancox by Charlotte Moore Pdf

Hancox is the Tudor hall house in rural Sussex where Charlotte Moore grew up, and where she lives today. It's a time warp where little has changed since her family took it on in 1888. They were a diverse family of doctors and soldiers, liberal politicians and educational pioneers. What they all had in common though was a habit of writing everything down and never throwing anything away. Every cupboard and every drawer is crammed with relics of family history - letters, diaries, sketchbooks, photograph albums, even old shopping lists and chequebook stubs - which together constitute a huge archive of Victorian and Edwardian family life containing fascinating stories of love and jealousy, heroism and defeat, riches and poverty as well as snapshots of the wider world beyond of Hastings, London and the empire. Told with a novelist's vigour, Hancox offers a richly detailed portrait of a vanished way of life: an English country house at the turn of the twentieth century, just before the tragedy of the First World War, with its presiding family, its servants, its farm and its local village.

Looking for Dawn by James Calvin Schaap Pdf

What happened to the girl was not particularly surprising. Dawn Burnett had been too frequently close to real trouble, if not half-buried in it. And, sad as it might be to say, she would not have been the first Lakota kid to die mysteriously, horribly, in the open spaces of blinding winter cold all around. Nothing of that was shocking. Sad? -yes, unquestionably and terribly sad. After all, Dawn is a beautiful young girl with so much going for her. Whatever she did or didn't do, what happened to her that night opens old stories never told but not forgotten, stories that emerge painfully in a world of swirling, naked cold, where forgiveness seems an endless horizon away. Looking for Dawn, set in the unrelenting cold of the northern plains, is the story of 24 hours in the lives half-sisters who did not know each other and could not be more different; but sisters who come to recognize each other through the brokenness all around.

The Ladies' Repository by Anonim Pdf

The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

Living with a Wild God by Barbara Ehrenreich Pdf

From the New York Times bestselling author of Nickel and Dimed comes a brave, frank, and exquisitely written memoir that will change the way you see the world. Barbara Ehrenreich is one of the most important thinkers of our time. Educated as a scientist, she is an author, journalist, activist, and advocate for social justice. In LIVING WITH A WILD GOD, she recounts her quest-beginning in childhood-to find "the Truth" about the universe and everything else: What's really going on? Why are we here? In middle age, she rediscovered the journal she had kept during her tumultuous adolescence, which records an event so strange, so cataclysmic, that she had never, in all the intervening years, written or spoken about it to anyone. It was the kind of event that people call a "mystical experience"-and, to a steadfast atheist and rationalist, nothing less than shattering. In LIVING WITH A WILD GOD, Ehrenreich reconstructs her childhood mission, bringing an older woman's wry and erudite perspective to a young girl's impassioned obsession with the questions that, at one point or another, torment us all. The result is both deeply personal and cosmically sweeping-a searing memoir and a profound reflection on science, religion, and the human condition. With her signature combination of intellectual rigor and uninhibited imagination, Ehrenreich offers a true literary achievement-a work that has the power not only to entertain but amaze.

Summer of the Gypsy Moths by Sara Pennypacker Pdf

From Clementine author Sara Pennypacker, this is a poignant middle-grade novel about two foster children who must find a way to work together in order to survive. Eleven-year-old Stella misses her (unreliable) mom, but she loves it at great-aunt Louise’s house. Louise lives on Cape Cod, where Stella hopes her mom will someday come and settle down. The only problem? Angel, the foster kid Louise has taken in. The two girls live together but there’s no way they’ll ever be friends. Then Louise suddenly passes away one morning—and Stella and Angel decide not to tell anyone. Now they have to depend on each other for survival. Now they are forced to trust each other with the biggest secret ever. With great empathy and humor, Sara Pennypacker tells the story of two very different girls who unexpectedly become each other’s true family.
