Austria-Hungary, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by G. E. Mitton Pdf

Excerpt from Austria-Hungary, Vol. 2 To gain some grip of these matters a short historical introduction is undoubtedly necessary. I do not think, however, that history should always begin at the beginning, though many people have a passion for delving into the past and groping after the roots of a subject, which often prove, when unearthed, to be exceedingly dry. The same tendency may be observed in writers Of biography, who are rarely content to begin with the man or woman whose life they are undertaking, or even with their parents, but frequently go back through many centuries, dwelling at dreary length upon tedious details which occupy half the book before the pith and core of the matter is reached. Hence in this very cursory sketch of the Dual Monarchy only so much as is essential to give colour and life to the whole book in all its aspects Shall be dealt with. The Political Evolution of the Hungarian Nation, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by C. M. Knatchbull-Hugessen Pdf

Excerpt from The Political Evolution of the Hungarian Nation, Vol. 2 of 2 ON February 29 tidings reached Vienna of the out 1 break of the Revolution in Paris and of the flight of Louis Philippe. The first result of the news was a run on the banks and a scramble for silver, due, of course, to the probability of a fall in value of paper money, but ascribed by Metternich to the machinations of Hungarian Radicals anxious to ruin the credit of the Austrian Govern ment.1 The panic spread from Vienna to Pest and other chief towns, and on March 3 Cornelius Balogh addressed the Diet on the general monetary position, calling on the Government to abandon the policy of reticence which caused the public to take a more gloomy view of the financial outlook than possibly was justified by the facts, and demanding the publication of an official statement, which alone could allay the public anxiety as to the proportion borne by cash in reserve to the note issue.2 Kossuth, who had long been of the opinion that parlia. Hungary (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Battishill Yolland Pdf

Excerpt from Hungary "Hazadnak renduletlenul Legy hive, omagyar!" It is a proud - and a pleasant - task to write the history of that race which has always fought for Western culture against the onslaughts of unenlightened and mediaeval barbarism. From the days when Vajk (St Stephen I.) embraced Christianity, Hungary has been a bulwark of Christendom and all that it holds dear, the champion of the Cross against the Crescent, the upholder of the treasured traditions of loyalty and culture that she worships in common with Great Britain, the object of her unbounded admiration and genuine affection. The Magyars have had a hard task in their endeavour to weld into one united nation the many and various peoples under their sway. Their neighbours have ambitions - fostered by the intrigues of unscrupulous agitators - which aim at a dismemberment of their country. Folktales of the Jews, Volume 2 by Dan Ben-Amos,Dov Noy Pdf

Folktales from Eastern Europe presents 71 tales from Ashkenasic culture in the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. It is the second volume in Folktales of the Jews, the five-volume series to be released over the next several years, in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg's classic, Legends of the Jews. The tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives at The University of Haifa, Israel (IFA), a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the Ashkenasic culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography. Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This volume and the others to come will be monuments to a rich but vanishing oral tradition

A History of Modern Jewish Religious Philosophy by Eliezer Schweid Pdf

Volume Three, The Crisis of Humanism, commences with an important essay on the challenge to the humanist tradition posed in the late 19th century by historical materialism, existentialism and positivism. These Jewish thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th century addressed the general European value crisis while laying foundations for Jewish renewal: Hess, Lazarus, Cohen, Ahad Ha-Am, Dubnow, Berdiczewski, and the theorists of Yiddishism and Labor Zionism.

The Cambridge Economic History of Modern Europe: Volume 2, 1870 to the Present by Stephen Broadberry,Kevin H. O'Rourke Pdf

Unlike most existing textbooks on the economic history of modern Europe, which offer a country-by-country approach, The Cambridge Economic History of Modern Europe rethinks Europe's economic history since 1700 as unified and pan-European, with the material organized by topic rather than by country. This second volume tracks Europe's economic history through three major phases since 1870. The first phase was an age of globalization and of European economic and political dominance that lasted until the First World War. The second, from 1914 to 1945, was one of war, deglobalization, and depression and the third was one of growing integration not only within Europe but also between Europe and the global economy. Leading authors offer comprehensive and accessible introductions to these patterns of globalization and deglobalization as well as to key themes in modern economic history such as economic growth, business cycles, sectoral developments, and population and living standards.
