Karen Massey is a highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist who is interested in sharing positive clinical experiences that can help others. This book focuses on the co-occurrence of Autism and Childhood Apraxia of Speech (also known as Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia in the UK).Find out how a group of children, each with both Autism and Childhood Apraxia of Speech, moved from being pre-verbal right through to speaking in sentences. Faced with the frustrations of not being able to speak even though they had the desire to talk to others, the children could not express their thoughts and feelings. Explore some of the background research, hear the children's personal stories and learn about the methods used to help each child along the journey. Discover how you can help children with similar needs to develop their speech, whether using their own voice or with the help of an Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) device.

Here's How to Treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Third Edition by Margaret Fish,Amy Skinder-Meredith Pdf

Here’s How to Treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Third Edition offers clinicians and students of speech-language pathology (SLP) a comprehensive look at the assessment, differential diagnosis, and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This book helps guide the SLP on which assessment tasks will provide the information needed to make a confident diagnosis of CAS at different stages of development, as well as best practices for treatment of CAS. The authors take a deep dive into application of evidence-based treatment strategies for children with CAS, and move beyond theoretical ideas to provide recommendations of specific activities to facilitate improved speech praxis in children across age groups, making this book extremely informative and practical. This latest edition maintains the original intention of the prior editions—to provide clinicians and students with a holistic look at the complex needs of children with CAS and to offer practical ideas for evaluation and treatment. The amount of new research over the past several years has been substantial. Fortunately for the readers, Here’s How to Treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Third Edition summarizes the most current research regarding the nature of CAS, best practices in evaluation, and effective treatment strategies to give clinicians greater confidence in working with children with this complex speech disorder. New to the Third Edition * Updates to reflect the current research findings related to the genetic and neurogenic correlates of CAS, as well as the features of CAS that are most sensitive and specific to consider when making a differential diagnosis * New chapters on unique needs of children with co-occurring challenges, such as ADHD, dysarthria, and developmental coordination disorder, and treatment of CAS via telepractice * Videos Disclaimer: Please note that ancillary content (such as documents, forms, etc.) may not be included as published in the original print version of this book.

The Late Talker by Dr. Marilyn C. Agin,Lisa F. Geng,Malcolm Nicholl Pdf

Every parent eagerly awaits the day his or her child will speak for the first time. For millions of mothers and fathers, however, anticipation turns to anxiety when those initial, all-important words are a long time coming. Many worried parents are reassured that their child is "just a late talker," but unfortunately, all too often that is not the case. Nineteen million children in the United States have serious speech disorders, such as apraxia of speech. For these toddlers, early and intensive speech therapy is crucial if they are to stand a chance of ever speaking normally. This book was written to help the worried parent cut through the confusion and stress to determine if their child needs help. The Late Talker is the first book of its kind, providing effective, practical answers to the questions every concerned parent asks. Written by Marilyn C. Agin, a highly respected developmental pediatrician, and Lisa F. Geng, a mother of two late talkers, it is a tremendously useful handbook that includes: - Ways to identify the warning signs of a speech disorder - Information on how to get the right kind of evaluations and therapy - Ways to obtain appropriate services through the school system and health insurance - Fun at-home activities that parents can do with their child to stimulate speech - Groundbreaking evidence of the promising and dramatic benefits of nutritional supplementation - Advice from experienced parents who've been there on what to expect and what you can do to be your child's best advocate

Essential Pathways and Circuits of Autism Pathogenesis by Gül Dölen,Mustafa Sahin Pdf

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1 in 68 children in the United states is afflicted with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), yet at this time, there is no cure for the disease. Autism is characterized by delays in the development of many basic skills, most notably the ability to socialize and adapt to novelty. The condition is typically identified in children around 3 years of age, however the high heritability of autism suggests that the disease process begins at conception. The identification of over 500 ASD risk genes, has enabled the molecular genetic dissection of the pathogenesis of the disease in model organisms such as mice. Despite the genetic heterogeneity of ASD etiology, converging evidence suggests that these disparate genetic lesions may result in the disruption of a limited number of key biochemical pathways or circuits. Classification of patients into groups by pathogenic rather than etiological categories, will likely aid future therapeutic development and clinical trials. In this set of papers, we explore the existing evidence supporting this view. Specifically, we focus on biochemical cascades such as mTOR and ERK signaling, the mRNA network bound by FMRP and UBE3A, dorsal and ventral striatal circuits, cerebellar circuits, hypothalamic projections, as well as prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortical circuits. Special attention will be given to studies that demonstrate the necessity and/or sufficiency of genetic disruptions (e.g. by molecular deletion and/or replacement) in these pathways and circuits for producing characteristic behavioral features of autism. Necessarily these papers will be heavily weighted towards basic mechanisms elucidated in animal models, but may also include investigations in patients.

The Learning to Learn Program by Cari Ebert Pdf

To develop, learn, and have meaningful relationships with other people, toddlers with autism need a core set of foundation skills on which to build. The Learning to Learn Program is designed for early intervention providers to use with families and caregivers. It includes assessment checklists, suggested goals and outcomes, along with specific intervention strategies for facilitating development of five core foundation skills including 1) nonverbal imitation, 2) joint attention, 3) sensory processing and self-regulation, 4) purposeful play, and 5) early language development. Young children with autism and other neurodevelopmental delays often struggle with acquisition of the these critical skills. When these foundation skills are absent or inconsistently displayed, it is difficult for struggling learners to make functional gains. This program offers a roadmap for helping young children with autism build foundation skills through playful interactions with parents and caregivers.
