Legacy of Stone by Margaret Hryniuk,Frank Korvemaker Pdf

In words and stunning colour pictures, this book tells the history and the current reality of over 50 fieldstone buildings in Saskatchewan. The book includes an introduction by Bernie Flaman, the provincial Heritage Architect, a historical overview, and profiles of several of Saskatchewan's most prominent stonemasons. The balance of the book is made up of stories of the buildings farmhouses, homes in urban communities, places of worship, public buildings and ruins. Margaret Hryniuk uses her years of experience in journalism to present factual yet fascinating accounts of the buildings and what is known of the people who put them there. Larry Easton's spectacular photographs bring these beautiful stone buildings to life, and Frank Korvemaker examines the dimensions and differences of the fieldstone that inhabits the Saskatchewan landscape.

Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd by Christine M. Totten Pdf

What more could there be to know about FDR, given how exhaustively his life has been written about? As it happens, there is more and that focuses on Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, the queen of her Washington social circle, later FDR's friend and love-and Eleanor's rival, as the title of Christine Totten's work points out. In Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd: Eleanor's Rival, FDR's Other Love, Totten presents a carefully structured case for a deep and lasting but chaste love between Lucy and FDR, against the prevailing view that they were clandestine lovers. Totten's research into the personal memories of the Rutherfurd family and the public holdings of the FDR Library establishes a new rich understanding of Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd--her early life, her education, and her role in the social and political scene in Washington. This work gives Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd her due, as a woman in her own right as well as FDR's valued soul mate and friend.

The Congress of Vienna and its Legacy by Mark Jarrett Pdf

Two centuries ago, Europe emerged from one of the greatest crises in its history. In September 1814, the rulers of Europe and their ministers descended upon Vienna to reconstruct Europe after two decades of revolution and war, with the major decisions made by the statesmen of the great powers. The territorial reconstruction of Europe, however, is only a part of this story. It was followed, in the years 1815 to 1822, by a bold experiment in international cooperation and counter-revolution, known as the 'Congress System'. The Congress of Vienna and subsequent Congresses constituted a major turning point - the first genuine attempt to forge an 'international order', to bring long-term peace to a troubled Europe, and to control the pace of political change through international supervision and intervention. In this book, Mark Jarrett argues that the decade of the European Congresses in fact marked the beginning of our modern era, with a profound impact upon the course of subsequent developments. Based upon extensive research, this book provides a fresh look at a pivotal but often neglected period.

The Legacy of the Grand Tour by Lisa Colletta Pdf

The topos of the journey is one of the oldest in literature, and even in this age of packaged tours and mediated experience, it still remains one of the most compelling. This volume examines the ways in which the legacy of the Grand Tour is still evident in works of travel and literature. From its aristocratic origins and the permutations of sentimental and romantic travel to the age of tourism and globalization, the Grand Tour still influences the destinations tourists choose and shapes the ideas of culture and sophistication that surround the act of travel. The essays in this collection examine a wide variety of literature—travel, memoir, and fiction—and explore the ways travel and ideas of “culture” have evolved since the heyday of the Grand Tour in the 18th century. The sites of the Grand Tour remain a powerful cultural draw, and they continue to define ideas of taste and learning for those who visit them.

Hungary's Heritage by Iparm??uv?szeti M?zeum (Hungary) Pdf

At the end of the First World War Fraknó and the Esterházy Castle, where the treasury had been kept since the 17th century, passed to Austria. The Esterházy family placed the major part of the Treasury with the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. In 1944, during the Second World War, the Treasury was moved for greater safety to the Esterházy family palace which, during the siege of Budapest, was hit by a bomb. Part of the collection was totally destroyed or irreparably damaged. Every fragment possible was rescued and since the 1960s the conservators of the museum have worked on the conservation of the surviving pieces, miraculously returning many to their former glory. The final section in the exhibition covers this successful, ongoing conservation work.

„Egy pillanat az örökkévalóságból” Nyáry Ernõ bagdadi érsek élete by Eva Nyary Pdf

,,The enamel pictures of the Hungarian Saint Crown" mark the pick of the successful painter's carrier of Éva Nyáry. Her uncle, Ernest Nyáry,Archbishop of Baghdad inspired the paintings of equal size, representing the pictures decorating the crown of our first king, Saint Stephan's, presented with national and international recognition to the interested public. the artist published the birth of the art pieces and the spirit and history of the crown in a work published with the similar title in 2002. She took the pen in 2006 and composed her following book entitled the Ancient Hungarian decorative art. Mgr. Ernest Nyáry, Carmelite monk, archbishop of the Catholic Latin mission of Baghdad, a member of the Saint Congregation of the Oriental Churches, awarded with the French Legion of Honor, approaching the age of 80 came to see his disciples, parents and friends living in Hungary for the last time, and than he transmitted his legacy in full to his brother Joseph's daughter, confiding her to preserve and manage it. Her father told many stories to Éva Nyáry about the romantic priest's carrier in her childhood. the several long meeting with him in the eighties meant her extraordinary impressions. the recorded conversations, the writings published about the noble thinking, sainted monk, matured the conception to share her impressions with readers. When she was handed over his diaries, texts, correspondence, photos and recorded memories, having his uncle's complete confidence, she has already felt as an obligation to work this fantastic treasury up. Ernest Nyáry's history of life who was born in an ancient Hungarian noble family in Turcansky Peter, today Slovakia in 1906, evolved in the priest's vocation, bridging world wars and continents--served as a lesson about faith, tolerance, decisions made in critical moments, and especially about humanity. Éva Nyáry's newest work follows her uncle's fantastic life relying on the documents at her disposal, many original quotations, and contemporary descriptions with historic fidelity. the unordinary story is completed by the archive photos of the legacy.
