Bacterial Physiology and Metabolism by Byung Hong Kim,Geoffrey Michael Gadd Pdf

Recent determination of genome sequences for a wide range of bacteria has made in-depth knowledge of prokaryotic metabolic function essential in order to give biochemical, physiological, and ecological meaning to the genomic information. Clearly describing the important metabolic processes that occur in prokaryotes under different conditions and in different environments, this advanced text provides an overview of the key cellular processes that determine bacterial roles in the environment, biotechnology, and human health. Prokaryotic structure is described as well as the means by which nutrients are transported into cells across membranes. Glucose metabolism through glycolysis and the TCA cycle are discussed, as well as other trophic variations found in prokaryotes, including the use of organic compounds, anaerobic fermentation, anaerobic respiratory processes, and photosynthesis. The regulation of metabolism through control of gene expression and control of the activity of enzymes is also covered, as well as survival mechanisms used under starvation conditions.

Bacterial Physiology and Metabolism by Cherilyn Gray Pdf

Bacterial physiology refers to a discipline concerning the life supporting processes and functions of the bacteria, which facilitate the growth and reproduction of the bacterial cells. Bacterial metabolism is a significant component of bacterial physiology, as it provides the means through which nutrients and energy is obtained by the bacteria for its survival and reproduction. Bacterial metabolism is focused on chemical diversity of dissimilation reactions and substrate oxidations, which create energy in the bacteria. Enzymatic reactions in bacterial cells are regulated by two models, which involve the regulation of enzyme activity and regulation of enzyme synthesis. The regulation of enzyme activity is involved in the modulation of biosynthetic pathways. The regulation of enzyme synthesis focuses on catabolite repression and enzyme induction, which control the degradative pathways. This book provides comprehensive insights into bacterial physiology and metabolism. It aims to serve as a resource guide for students and experts alike.

Microbial Physiology and Metabolism by Daniel R. Caldwell Pdf

MICROBIAL PHYSIOLOGY & METABOLISM (Second Edition), by Daniel Caldwell. Although microbes & larg life forms differ physiologically in many ways -- when considered as a group, microbes display, at the cellular level, the physiological possibilities of nature. And their small size, rapid reproduction, relatively simple nutrition requirements, & metabolic diversity & adaptability make them ideal for research. Because metabolism & physiology overlap, this unique book waves a tapetry uniting & blending the explanations to yield a thorough discussion of both. Moreove, the author explores the role of genetics in microbial physiology & metabolism, with the perspective of understanding the coordinated operation of all the cell's structures & molecules (not just genetic molecules & expression of genetic potential). Chapters: The Nature of Microbial Physiology; The Subcellular Structures of Microbes; Structure Formation; The Physiological Implications of Nutrition; Growth; Transport; Catabolic Metabolism; Fermentation; Energy Generation; Small Molecules; Protein Synthesis; Nucleic Acid Metabolism; Regulation; Genetics; The Effects of Environmental Factors on Microbes; The Physiology of Antimicrobial Chemicals; The Autotrophs; Differentiation; The Physiology of Microbial Ecology; Molecular Microbial Physiology; The Archaeobacteria. Assessment of Planetary Protection Requirements for Spacecraft Missions to Icy Solar System Bodies by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Space Studies Board,Committee on Planetary Protection Standards for Icy Bodies in the Outer Solar System Pdf

NASA's exploration of planets and satellites during the past 50 years has led to the discovery of traces of water ice throughout the solar system and prospects for large liquid water reservoirs beneath the frozen ICE shells of multiple satellites of the giant planets of the outer solar system. During the coming decades, NASA and other space agencies will send flybys, orbiters, subsurface probes, and, possibly, landers to these distant worlds in order to explore their geologic and chemical context. Because of their potential to harbor alien life, NASA will select missions that target the most habitable outer solar system objects. This strategy poses formidable challenges for mission planners who must balance the opportunity for exploration with the risk of contamination by Earth's microbes, which could confuse the interpretation of data obtained from these objects. The 2000 NRC report Preventing the Forward Contamination of Europa provided a criterion that was adopted with prior recommendations from the Committee on Space Research of the International Council for Science. This current NRC report revisits and extends the findings and recommendations of the 2000 Europa report in light of recent advances in planetary and life sciences and, among other tasks, assesses the risk of contamination of icy bodies in the solar system.
