Balloons, Airships and Flying Machines (Classic Reprint) by Gertrude Bacon Pdf

Excerpt from Balloons, Airships and Flying Machines That night of 1782, therefore, marks the first great step ever made towards the conquest of the sky. But to better understand the history of Aeronautics - a word that means the sailing of the air - We must go back far be yond the days of the Montgolfier brothers. For in all times and in all ages men have wanted to fly. David wished for the wings of a dove to fly away and be at rest, and since his time, and before it, how many have not longed to take flight and sail away in the boundless, glorious realms above, to explore the fleecy clouds, and to float free in the blue vault Of heaven. A Short History of Balloons and Flying Machines by Lord Montagu Pdf

In the 21st century - the age of the budget airline - where quick and reliable air travel is available to a large segment of society, it seems hard to comprehend that it is less than 250 years since the first human took to the skies. Although the wing of the bird seemed like the most obvious natural mechanism to attempt replicate, it was actually contained hot air, as demonstrated by the Montgolfiers and their balloon, that gave birth to the era human aviation. Since the first manned balloon flight in 1783, developments have come thick and fast, the airship, the aeroplane, and finally the space shuttle. This reprint of a classic publication by Lord Montagu, from 1907, details the early history of aviation. Complete with illustrations and a brand new introduction, and containing sections such as 'Navigable Balloons', 'A Balloon Duel', and 'A Perilous Ascent', it is a wonderful work for anyone with an interest in the technology and interesting events of the lighter-than-air period of aeronautics.

The Conquest of the Air by John Alexander Pdf

Excerpt from The Conquest of the Air: The Romance of Aerial Navigation Then we have a m mler of crank inventors who imagine that they have discovered a way of causing gravity to pull in the other direction, and a still less number who claim to have discovered how flying machines may be worked without any motive power at all. Except by a system of Springs, levers, and pistons, which to their mind gives a kind of an unbalanced pressure which will push the machine either upward or forward as may be desired. All these gentlemen expect courteous replies to their epistles, and I have thought that it would be a good plan to publish a cheap, short, and concise treatise on flying machines and balloons, and then recommend each to purchase and read the work before writing to me a second time. By a perusal of Mr. Alexander's work, I am happy to find the exact treatise that I had in my mind. In this little publication, we have in one hundred and sixty pages the whole history of the subject; in fact everything that is worth knowing, which although written in a short and concise manner is still very attractive, in a word the exact book that is required at the present moment; and I can recommend its careful perusal to everyone who is studying this much-discussed question. Conquering the Air by Archibald Williams Pdf

Revisit the romantic age of aeronautics when the rapid development of balloons, dirigibles and airplanes changed the world forever. Archibald Williams wrote this entertaining and informative journey through the early days of air travel for readers of all ages in 1926, covering the earliest ascents in balloons through the Wright Brothers, trans-Atlantic flights. The special edition enlarged reprinting includes: - Enlarged 7" x 10" pages - Crisp digitally re-scanned and enhanced images - Bold new cover design - Author's original page layouts - Classic type font - English printing with illustration captions Chapter by chapter Williams chronicles the feats and failures of those legendary pioneers of flight with enthusiasm and an eye towards the future, where he envisions a time when a "machine will be able to alight vertically in a space no larger than the back garden of a small suburban villa, or on a flat roof." Enjoy an informative look at the earliest ascents of balloons, dirigibles, and the first crossings that made history. The rapid development of the mechanical airplane is covered with great interest, as is its application in commercial air travel, exploration, and warfare. For readers looking to enjoy a broad, illustrated overview of airplanes and the history of air travel, Conquering the Air is a delight to read. "We shall devote our attention first to the origin of the spherical balloons and to the most notable voyages made in them. Next, we shall see how the balloon was altered in form, provided with motive power of its own, and converted from a mere gas-container and a self-directing aerial ship. Then follows an account of the experiments which led to the production of the first practical flying machine; to be succeeded by a series of chapters devoted to those fights, of successively increasing length, which, as first exemplifying the conquest of the air the grand scale, may justly be termed epoch-making." Table of Contents: Chapter 1: Early Balloon Ascents Chapter 2: Further Ascents in Fire-Balloons Chapter 3: The Coming of the Gas Balloon Chapter 4: The First Balloon Ascents in Great Britain Chapter 5: The First Crossing of the Channel by Air Chapter 6: Famous Balloon Voyages Chapter 7: The Coming of the Dirigible Balloon Chapter 8: The First Attack on the Atlantic Chapter 9: Pioneers of Mechanical Flight Chapter 10: The First Crossing of the English Channel by Aeroplane Chapter 11: From London to Manchester Chapter 12: A Splendid Future Chapter 13: The First Crossing of the Atlantic by Air Chapter 14: A Magnificent Success Chapter 15: To New York and Back Chapter 16: From London to Australia Chapter 17: From Cairo to the Cape Chapter 18: The First Non-stop Flight Across America Chapter 19: Aircraft in the Polar Regions Chapter 20: The First Flight Around the World Chapter 21: From Italy to Japan and Back Chapter 22: From Spain to Buenos Aires Chapter 23: Lifebelts of the Air Chapter 24: Aircraft in War Chapter 25: Airways Chapter 26: Uses for Aircraft Chapter 27: The Future of Flying About the Publisher: The CGR Publishing Restoration Workshop uses a vast array of computers and digital scanners to restore, preserve, and enhance the classic works of writers and artists from the 19th century. Balloons and Airships by Anthony Burton Pdf

This book tells the often dramatic and always fascinating story of flight in lighter than air machines. For centuries man had dreamed of flying, but all attempts failed, until in 1782 the Montgolfier brothers constructed the world's first hot air balloon The following year saw the first ascent with aeronauts - not human beings but a sheep, a duck and a cockerel. But it was not long before men and women too took to the air and became ever more adventurous. The aeronauts became famous giving displays before crowds of thousands, often accompanied by special effects. In the early years, ballooning was a popular pastime, but in the 19th century it found a new use with the military. Balloons were used to send messages out during the Siege of Paris and later found a role as observation balloons for the artillery. But their use was always limited by the fact that they were at the mercy of the wind. There were numerous attempts at steering balloons, and various attempts were made to power them but it was the arrival of the internal combustion engine that saw the balloon transformed into the airship. The most famous developer of airships was Graf von Zeppelin and the book tells the story of the use of his airships in both peacetime and at war. There were epic adventures including flights over the poles and for a time, commercial airships flourished - then came the disaster of the Hindenburg. Airships still fly today and ballooning has become a hugely popular pastime.
