Banking and Financial Markets by Andrada Bilan,Hans Degryse,Kuchulain O’Flynn,Steven Ongena Pdf

The traditional role of a bank was to transfer funds from savers to investors, engaging in maturity transformation, screening for borrower risk and monitoring for borrower effort in doing so. A typical loan contract was set up along six simple dimensions: the amount, the interest rate, the expected credit risk (determining both the probability of default for the loan and the expected loss given default), the required collateral, the currency, and the lending technology. However, the modern banking industry today has a broad scope, offering a range of sophisticated financial products, a wider geography -- including exposure to countries with various currencies, regulation and monetary policy regimes -- and an increased reliance on financial innovation and technology. These new bank business models have had repercussions on the loan contract. In particular, the main components and risks of a loan contract can now be hedged on the market, by means of interest rate swaps, foreign exchange transactions, credit default swaps and securitization. Securitized loans can often be pledged as collateral, thus facilitating new lending. And the lending technology is evolving from one-to-one meetings between a loan officer and a borrower, at a bank branch, towards potentially disruptive technologies such as peer-to-peer lending, crowd funding or digital wallet services. This book studies the interaction between traditional and modern banking and the economic benefits and costs of this new financial ecosystem, by relying on recent empirical research in banking and finance and exploring the effects of increased financial sophistication on a particular dimension of the loan contract.

Money and Capital Markets in Postbellum America by John A. James Pdf

Postbellum economic change in the United States required an efficient system by which capital could be transferred to areas where it was relatively scarce. In assessing the structure that evolved to meet this need, John James provides a new and convincing explanation of the forces underlying the integration of separate and local money markets to form a national market. To understand the role of financial markets during the period, the author examines the institutions and operations of the banking system in detail. In contrast to the now-prevailing view among scholars, Professor James finds that the banking system was quite adaptable in responding to institutional constraints, and he focuses in particular on the role of the correspondent banking system. The second part of his book assesses the performance of the market and the forces promoting change during the period. Drawing on a new and more carefully derived set of interest rates, the author tests competing hypotheses to explain integration and advances a more satisfactory alternative theory. He offers the first modern analysis of American financial institutions of the period between the Civil War and the establishment of the Federal Reserve System. In so doing, he adds to our knowledge of the historic role of finance and capital in economic development. Originally published in 1978. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Capital Markets 2020 by John Garvey, PwC Pdf

Capital Markets will look very different in 2020 than they do today. Based on feedback from PwC clients, many have gloomily predicted a shrinking capital markets landscape, over-regulation and the fall of traditionally powerful financial centers such as London and New York. However, we have a different vision for 2020 – one of a New Equilibrium. This New Equilibrium consists of: government intervention receding (as memories of the financial and sovereign debt crises fade), traditional financial axis of power further solidifying their positions at the top, and the world seeking stability and predictability in the context of riskier and more uncertain geopolitical situations. In addition, much of the landscape where financial institutions operate will change significantly. This change will come from economic and government policies, from innovation, operational restructuring, technology, from smarter and more demanding clients, companies harnessing powerful data, and from continued growth of the shadow banking system.

Non-bank Financial Institutions and Capital Markets in Turkey by Lalit Raina,Marie-Renée Bakker Pdf

Currently, Turkey's financial services industry is in an early stage of development with credit markets dominated by banking and capital markets dominated by Government securities. Longstanding macro-economic instability and inflation have discouraged investment in financial assets and crowded out funding for the private sector. The resulting lack of depth and breadth has made the financial sector in Turkey vulnerable to shocks resulting in repeated crises, and has diminished its intermediation efficiency. This study analyzes the state of development and prospects for future growth of Turkish non-bank financial institutions and capital markets. It identifies the key policy issues that should be addressed in order to develop non-bank financial institutions in Turkey. Some of the themes included in the discussion and policy recommendations are: mobilizing savings; building an institutional investor base comprising insurance companies, private pension funds, and mutual funds; developing equity markets, debt markets, and derivative markets; developing leasing, factoring and venture capital companies; and strengthening confidence in financial markets through improved corporate governance.

Capital Markets and Financial Intermediation by Colin Mayer,Xavier Vives Pdf

Financial intermediation is currently a subject of active research on both sides of the Atlantic. The integration of European financial markets, in particular, highlights several important issues. In this volume, derived from a joint CEPR conference with the Fundacion Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (BBV), leading academics from Europe and North America review 'state-of-the-art' theories of banking and financial intermediation and discuss their policy implications. The principal focus is on the risks of increased competition, the appropriate regulation of banks, and the differences between Anglo-American and Continental European forms of financial markets. Relationship banking, stock markets and banks, banking and corporate control, financial intermediation in Eastern Europe, monetary policy and the banking system, and financial intermediation and growth are also discussed.

Centres and Peripheries in Banking by P. L. Cottrell Pdf

Based on papers given to the European Association for Banking History conference held in Stockholm in 2002, this volume presents a broad investigation into the relationship between the centre and the periphery in banking. Focusing on the historical development of financial markets, from their emergence in the early modern period to today's global financial and capital markets, the chapters investigate how local, national and international relationships have affected and helped shape the banking industry over three-hundred years. This very wide-ranging discussion in time and place is provided by a group of international experts, encompassing bankers, economists, economic historians and historians, and will be of interest to all those with a scholarly or professional interest in the development of financial institutions.
