Baptist Identities by Ian M. Randall,Toivo Pilli,Anthony R. Cross Pdf

The authors of the papers published here come from a dozen different countries and represent different expressions of Baptist life. The papers were delivered at the third International Conference on Baptist Studies, held at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague in July 2003, with the theme Baptist Identities. Those who gave presentations explored what factors have contributed to the nature of Baptist distinctiveness in different countries and at different times. In some cases the authors have written about their own contexts, using specific case studies that relate to particular periods, whereas in other cases they range more widely, covering several countries and/or longer periods of time. Topics examined in this volume include theological education, women in leadership, issues of ethnicity, Baptist identity and national consciousness, and creeds. The regional scope of the Baptist stories that are analyzed includes Africa, Asia, Australia, Eastern and Western Europe, and North America. At a time when there is considerable discussion throughout the world Baptist community about the nature of Baptist identity, this collection of papers by significant historians of Baptist life is an important contribution.

Analogous Uses of Language, Eucharistic Identity, and the 'baptist' Vision by Aaron James Pdf

This book considers a 'baptist' account of the identity of the church, Jesus' body, and the communion elements in the Lord's Supper. It does so in conversation with Thomas Aquinas, Balthasar Hubmaier, and James Wm. McClendon, Jr. in the context of contemporary Baptist engagements with ecumenical Christianity and of contemporary philosophy of language. In a very creative and imaginative way it sets the stage for an account of the identity of Jesus' body, the bread and wine, and the church, that makes a constructive contribution to ecumenical Christianity

Turning Points in Baptist History by Michael Edward Williams,Walter B. Shurden Pdf

Arranged in chronological order so that the Baptist saga can be understood as a continuous narrative, the book has the added advantage of permitting the reader to cherry-pick chapters that are of particular interest. The Baptist struggles for freedom of conscience, for a believer's church, for including both genders and all races, for fulfilling the Great Commission, and for the separation of church and state--these are only a few of the denominational-shaping turning points one discovers in this book.

James Robinson Graves by James A. Patterson Pdf

James Robinson Graves (1820-1893) is known for firmly believing that Baptists of his day needed clearly distinct markers in order to preserve a meaningful denominational identity. The founder of Landmarkism, his theology emphasized church succession (an unbroken trail of authentic congregations dating back to the New Testament), the local church (rather than the idea of a universal Body of Christ), and strict baptism guidelines. In this first biography of Graves in more than eighty years, author James A. Patterson portrays the man as bold and brash. A native of Vermont who moved south to Nashville in 1845, the self-educated preacher and budding journalist would become a combative defender of the Baptist cause, engaging in public controversy with Methodists, Restorationists, and even fellow Baptists. Ultimately, Graves sought to influence the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention in its formative period and was the primary shaper of the “Tennessee Tradition,” now considered a key strand of Southern Baptist life and identity. By focusing on Graves’s understanding of essential Baptist boundary markers, this book assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the Landmark legacy. It concludes with an epilogue that discusses the enduring influence of his ideas in the decades after his death.

Canadian Baptist Fundamentalism, 1878–1978 by Taylor Murray,Paul R. Wilson Pdf

As the first single-volume work to present a national picture of Baptist engagement with the fundamentalist movement in Canada in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Canadian Baptist Fundamentalism fills an important gap in the historiography. It explores the contributions of well-known fundamentalists, such as T. T. Shields, William "Bible Bill" Aberhart, and J. J. Sidey, while also introducing the reader to several lesser-known figures, including Joshua Denovan, E. J. Stobo, and T. A. Meister. Together, these studies demonstrate the diversity of the fundamentalist movement as it emerged and developed across Canada. By drawing on material from across the country, Canadian Baptist Fundamentalism addresses old themes in new ways--and, in the process, raises a variety of questions and possibilities for new avenues of study.

A Baptist Democracy by Lee Canipe Pdf

The first decades of the 20th century were days of robust optimism in the United States. These were the confident years of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, progressive reform and high purpose. This period also marked the high tide of what author Lee Canipe calls "Baptist democracy": the moral overlap between Baptist theology and American democracy that continues to shape the way Baptists in the United States understand and articulate their faith. In this book, Canipe traces the rise of Baptist democracy as reflected in the work of three prominent leaders who made their most significant contributions to Baptist life between 1900 and 1925: Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918), E. Y. Mullins (1860-1928), and George W. Truett (1867-1944). Celebrating the harmony between the principles of their church and the ideals of their state, these three Baptists eloquently articulated what, by the turn of the 20th century, had become an article of faith for many of their fellow Baptists.

Baptists in Canada by Gordon L. Heath,Dallas Friesen,Taylor Murray Pdf

Baptists arrived in what would become Canada in the mid-eighteenth century, and from those early arrivals Baptists from a wide variety of backgrounds planted churches in every region of the vast nation. This book traces that history of Baptists in Canada, and provides historical antecedents and theological rationales for their church polity. Written in a generous spirit, it recognizes what Baptists share with other Christian communities and how they differ among themselves on some matters. It places Baptists in Canada in the larger historical and global context, and concludes with commentary on opportunities and challenges ahead.

Tracks and Traces by Paul S. Fiddes Pdf

This is a comprehensive, yet unusual, book on the faith and life of Baptist Christians. It explores a Baptist understanding of the church, ministry, sacraments, and mission from a thoroughly theological perspective. In a series of interlinked essays, the author relates Baptist identity to a theology of covenant, and to participation in the communion of the triune God. The book thus surveys the tracks of heritage, giving a solid historical background to each of the major themes, while at the same time offering traces of possible paths for the future, based on a tracing out of a vision of God.

The authors of the papers published here come from a dozen different countries and represent different expressions of Baptist life. ""Baptists have struggled with issues of identity throughout their four hundred-year history, and today they are recognized as a diverse grouping scattered across the face of the earth. Although the essays in this volume underscore differences that exist among them, they remain firm in their conviction that they are one people in Christ. As the biblical motto of the Baptist World Alliance puts it, there is 'one Lord, one faith, one baptism'. The rich scholarship of this volume enables us to savor both the differences and the commonalities of the Baptists."" --Richard V. Pierard, Scholar-In-Resident, Gordon College, and General Editor, Baptists Together in Christ 1905-2005: A Hundred-Year History of the Baptist World Alliance (2005) ""In this rich set of essays both the unity and diversity of Baptist thought and life is clearly revealed. The range is wide, from Baptist beginnings in the seventeenth century to the present day with separate sections providing focus of European, North American and global perspectives. In this respect, whilst some tell their own story, it is interesting to see a Canadian and an American analyzing early British Baptist sensitivities, and a Scot and a Pole wrestling with North American biography. Many papers seek to understand, as all good history should, the true nature of Baptist identity by exploring the finite and the particular. But there are other more synthetic articles which seek to bring together the total reality with masterful comprehensive grasp. In this respect it is fitting that the whole collection should conclude with Bill Brackney's relating the deep Baptist concern for religious freedom to the work of effective evangelism. Rich in diversity, this collection of essays will both deepen and extend our understanding of Baptist history."" --John H. Y. Briggs, Senior Research Fellow in Church History and Director of the Centre for Baptist History and Heritage, Regent's Park College, University of Oxford ""Just when it seemed that denominational history was a thing of the past, there has been a revival of scholarly interest in Baptist studies. The essays in this volume represent that renaissance exploring as they do oft-neglected aspects of the Baptist past with an eye toward Baptist unity and identity today. A valuable contribution to a better understanding of the people of God called Baptists."" --Timothy George, Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, and an executive editor of Christianity Today. Baptist Theology by Stephen R. Holmes Pdf

This book considers the distinctive ideas and expressions of Christian faith to be found in the historic Baptist churches. An outline of the history of the Baptist movement will be offered, from its British beginnings in Amsterdam in 1609, through its varied developments in Britain, Europe and North America, to its worldwide presence and diversity today, and its relationship to many other churches with apparently-similar practices (Pentecostal and 'new' churches, e.g.). Holmes draws the various threads together, noting the real diversities in the history of Baptist theology, but suggesting that in a vision of the present and urgent Lordship of Christ experienced in the local congregation, there is a thread that links most of these distinctives.

Orthodox Radicals by Matthew C. Bingham Pdf

In the seventeenth century, English Baptists existed on the fringe of the nation's collective religious life. Today, Baptists have developed into one of the world's largest Protestant denominations. Despite this impressive transformation, those first English Baptists remain chronically misunderstood. In Orthodox Radicals, Matthew C. Bingham clarifies and analyzes the origins and identity of Baptists during the English Revolution, arguing that mid-seventeenth century Baptists did not, in fact, understand themselves to be a part of a larger, all-encompassing Baptist movement. Contrary to both the explicit statements of many historians and the tacit suggestion embedded in the very use of "Baptist" as an overarching historical category, the early modern men and women who rejected infant baptism would not have initially understood that single theological stance as being in itself constitutive of a new collective identity. Rather, the rejection of infant baptism was but one of a number of doctrinal revisions then taking place among English puritans eager to further their on-going project of godly reformation. Orthodox Radicals complicates of our understanding of Baptist identity, setting the early English Baptists in the cultural, political, and theological context of the wider puritan milieu out of which they arose. The book also speaks to broader themes, including early modern debates on religious toleration, the mechanisms by which early modern actors established and defended their tenuous religious identities, and the perennial problem of anachronism in historical writing. Bingham also challenges the often too-hasty manner in which scholars have drawn lines of theological demarcation between early modern religious bodies, and reconsiders one of this period's most dynamic and influential religious minorities from a fresh and perhaps controversial perspective. By combining a provocative reinterpretation of Baptist identity with close readings of key theological and political texts, Orthodox Radicals offers the most original and stimulating analysis of mid-seventeenth-century Baptists in decades.
