Middle Proterozoic to Cambrian Rifting, Central North America by Richard W. Ojakangas,Albert Binkley Dickas,John C. Green Pdf

Based on the Tenth International Basement Tectonics Conference held at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in August 1992, this volume contains 19 papers, 13 of which focus on the Middle Proterozoic Midcontinent Rift. An introductory essay discussing the Middle Proterozoic to Cambrian rifting in central North America is followed by contributions addressing topics including the Midcontinent Rift in Michigan and Minnesota, the Port Coldwell veins of northern Ontario, and petrography and sedimentation in the western Lake Superior region. The last five papers deal with the pre-Mount Simon basins of Ohio, the English Graben and the newly proposed East Continent Rift Complex, the Reelfoot Rift/Rough Creek Graben in the evolution of the Illinois Basin, and the A-type sheet granites in the Oklahoma Aulacogen of Cambrian age. The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada by Andrew Miall Pdf

The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada, Second Edition, focuses on the large, regional, sedimentary accumulations in Canada and the United States. Each chapter provides a succinct summary of the tectonic setting and structural and paleogeographic evolution of the basin it covers, with details on structure and stratigraphy. The book features four new chapters that cover the sedimentary basins of Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. In addition to sedimentary geologists, this updated reference is relevant for basin analysis, regional geology, stratigraphy, and for those working in the hydrocarbon exploration industry. Features updates to existing chapters, along with new chapters on sedimentary basins in Alaska and Arctic Canada Includes nearly 300 detailed, full-color paleogeographic maps Written for general geological audiences and individuals working in the resources sector, particularly those in the fossil fuel industry

Sedimentary Basins and Crustal Processes at Continental Margins by G.M. Gibson,F. Roure,G. Manatschal Pdf

Continental margins and their fossilized analogues are important repositories of natural resources. With better processing techniques and increased availability of high-resolution seismic and potential field data, imaging of present-day continental margins and their embedded sedimentary basins has reached unprecedented levels of refinement and definition, as illustrated by examples described in this volume. This, in turn, has led to greatly improved geological, geodynamic and numerical models for the crustal and mantle processes involved in continental margin formation from the initial stages of rifting through continental rupture and break-up to development of a new ocean basin. Further informing these models, and contributing to a better understanding of the features imaged in the seismic and potential field data, are observations made on fossilized fragments of exhumed subcontinental mantle lithosphere and ocean–continent transition zones preserved in ophiolites and orogenic belts of both Palaeozoic and Mesozoic age from several different continents, including Europe, South Asia and Australasia.

Computerized Modeling of Sedimentary Systems by Jan Harff,Wolfram Lemke,Karl Stattegger Pdf

Computerized modeling is a powerful tool to describe the complex interrelations between measured data and the dynamics of sedimentary systems. Complex interaction of environmental factors with natural variations and increasing anthropogenic intervention is reflected in the sedimentary record at varying scales. The understanding of these processes gives way to the reconstruction of the past and is a key to the prediction of future trends. Especially in cases where observations are limited and/or expensive, computer simulations may substitute for the lack of data. State-of-the-art research work requires a thorough knowledge of processes at the interfaces between atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere, and is therefore an interdisciplinary approach.

The Great Rift Valleys of Pangea in Eastern North America: Tectonics, structure, and volcanism by Peter M. LeTourneau,Paul Eric Olsen Pdf

The breakup of the Pangean supercontinent in the Triassic-Jurassic age left great rift basins containing an extraordinary record of the physical and biological conditions which precipitated a major extinction event at the time. These basins collectively form a rift province called the Central Atlantic Margin, which spans more than 45 degrees of paleolatitude and records over 35 million years of Earth history. Leading experts present a detailed review of the rift province's geology, paleobiology, and geophysics. This extensive two-volume work offers in-depth coverage of the North American components of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province. In volume 1, leading researchers give thorough reviews and highlight recent advances in our understanding of the structural geology, tectonics, and volcanism of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province.

Sedimentary Cover—North American Craton: U.S. by L.L. Sloss Pdf

The 'sedimentary cover' refers to the stratified rocks of youngest Proterozoic and Phanerozoic age that rest upon the largely crystalline basement rocks of the continental interior. This volume presents data and interpretations of the geophysics of the craton and summarizes the craton's tectonic evolution. It also presents the stratigraphy, structural history, and economic geology of specific sedimentary basins (e.g. Appalachian basin) and regions (e.g. Rocky Mountains). It concludes with a discussion of the currently popular theories of cratonal tectonics, & unresolved questions are identified.
