Beat the Devils by Josh Weiss Pdf

This inventive, page-turning crime thriller, shortlisted for the Sidewise Award, with "palpable emotional depth" (New York Times Book Review) envisions a world in which the Red Scare never ended. USA, 1958. President Joseph McCarthy sits in the White House, elected on a wave of populist xenophobia and barely‑concealed anti‑Semitism. The country is in the firm grip of McCarthy's Hueys, a secret police force evolved from the House Un-American Activities Committee. Hollywood's sparkling vision of the American dream has been suppressed; its remaining talents forced to turn out endless anti‑communist propaganda. LAPD detective Morris Baker—a Holocaust survivor who drowns his fractured memories of the unspeakable in schnapps and work—is called to the scene of a horrific double‑homicide. The victims are John Huston, a once‑promising but now forgotten film director, and an up‑and‑coming young journalist named Walter Cronkite. Clutched in the hand of one of the dead men is a cryptic note containing the phrase “beat the devils” followed by a single name: Baker. Did the two men die in an attack fueled by better-dead-than-red sentiment, as the Hueys are quick to conclude, or were they murdered in a cover-up designed to protect—or even set in motion—a secret plot connected to Baker's past? In a country where terror grows stronger by the day, and paranoia rises unchecked, Baker is determined to find justice for two men who raised their voices in a time when free speech comes at the ultimate cost. In the course of his investigation, Baker stumbles into a conspiracy that reaches deep into the halls of power and uncovers a secret that could destroy the City of Angels—and the American ideal itself.

Beating the Devil's Game by Katherine Ramsland Pdf

Today, the basic precepts of criminal investigation—fingerprints, DNA, blood evidence—are known among professionals and lay people alike. But behind each of these familiar concepts is a fascinating story of the evolution of science and law, spearheaded by innovative thinkers, many of whom risked their careers for more perfect justice. Dr. Katherine Ramsland, renowned expert in criminology, traces that development from thirteenth-century Chinese studies of decomposition through the Renaissance and the era of Newtonian physics to the marvels of the present day and beyond. Along the way, she introduces us to forensic pioneers and visionaries who galvanized the field, raised investigative standards, and whose efforts have kept us just steps ahead of increasingly sophisticated criminals.

The Games with Devils Are Over by Lucien Nzeyimana Pdf

This book is about love, hate, disappointment and betrayal. "Eros" is represented by Jack's love towards Nikita. His attraction to Nikita embodies the force of love. The counterpart was hate, as Nikita's feelings were all directed to the opposite side, killers of her father, brother and ex boyfriends. Philia and agape helped Jack get along with his destroyers and rivals. Jack is also fond of people who do the right thing. His case is an example of true forgiveness. He saw Dick, Geram, and Juvenhack as human beings worthy of respect. He forgave and loved the very people whose desire was not only to destroy his family but also to annihilate a group of people. Though Jack never liked their actions since childhood, he still treated them with kindness, love and respect. Jack's life was marked by a conflict between folly and resignation. Folly is portrayed by evils of oppression and dictatorship of Evildoers who ruled the postcolonial Burundi. The main character of Dickson Rushatsihori is presented as the symbol of evil, the prototype of Evildoers. He is a rigid and corrupted individual who would never wish peace to his fellow citizens. Rather than seeing Burundians living in harmony with one another, this proponent of the status quo would only wish evil, chaos and anarchy to his country. The theme of folly is also depicted in Jack's relationship with Nikita Chissocco. It is illustrated by Nikita's betrayal of his love for her. Nikita expresses her folly through abusive language, domestic violence, infidelities and her collaboration with Evildoers such as Dick, Juvenhack Zim and Geram to destroy her husband's dignity. Jack was forced to a war for the liberation of his mind emprisoned in his own house. He hoped that folly and resignation would eventually coil up. He would not accept that his destiny was to suffer all his life. Folly and resignation finally collided, forcing Jack to defend his honor and dignity. By breaking up with Dick and Nikita's folly, he liberated himself from a heavy burden. He pulled himself together to reconstruct his life with more strength and courage. This captivating story is an account of one's life, yet it will touch those of so many. Not only does it bring into the fore the injustices of this world, it also shows that no matter what life throws at us, we all seek love and closeness with another human being.

The Rise of the Latin American Baseball Leagues, 1947-1961 by Lou Hernández Pdf

Major League Baseball today would be unrecognizable without the large number of Latin American players and managers filling its ranks. Their strong influence on the sport can trace its beginnings to professional leagues established south of the border and in the Caribbean nations in the 1940s. This narrative history of Latin American baseball leagues during the 1940s and 1950s provides an in-depth, year-by-year chronicle of seasonal leagues in the seven primary baseball-playing areas in the region: Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The success of these leagues, and their often acrimonious competition with U.S. Organized Baseball, eventually ushered in a new era of contract concessions from owners and general labor advancements for players that forever changed the game.
