Behind the Desert Storm by Pavel Stroilov Pdf

Using top secret documents stolen from Russian archives, historian Pavel Stroilov, a Russian dissident living in London in political exile, has written a masterpiece on the behind-the-scenes politicking of the first Gulf War that exposes direct lies in the memoirs of President Bush Senior, Brent Scowcroft and James Baker, and explains the truth behind the current revolutions throughout the Middle East. In addition to revealing a great number of never-before-seen top secret documents, Behind the Desert Storm delves into closed-doors discussions between world leaders - something that normally remains secret for a very long time. It tells the hidden history of the events which have largely determined the current state of the Middle East - from the conflict in Iraq to the Israeli-Palestinian 'peace process' to the development of the 'Eurabia' alliance between the EU and the Arab states. Looking forward, Stroilov draws out relevant lessons from history for future foreign policy.

The Long Road To Desert Storm And Beyond: The Development Of Precision Guided Bombs by Major Donald I. Blackwelder Pdf

This paper examines the long development of precision guided bombs to show that the accuracy attained in Desert Storm was an evolution not a revolution in aerial warfare. This evolution continues and gives offensive airpower the advantage over the defense. Guided bomb development started during World War One with the “aerial torpedo”. During World War Two the German Fritz X and Hs-293 were visually guided bombs and both experienced success against allied shipping. The Army Air Corps also developed a wide variety of TV, heat, radar, and visually guided bombs. The visually guided AZON was successful in Burma and the radar guided Bat was successful against Japanese ships. During the Korean War visually guided RAZON and TARZON bombs had some success. In Vietnam the Paveway I laser-guided bombs and Walleye TV-guided bombs were successful on a much broader scale. Paveway II and III, Walleye II, and GBU-15s were developed and successfully combat tested throughout the 1970s and 1980s. When Desert Storm initiated in 1991 there were very few guided weapons that had not been extensively tested on training ranges and in combat. The precision demonstrated to the World during Desert Storm started evolving when airpower was first envisioned as a new dimension for conducting war, and was far from a revolution. Now, the continued development of imaging infrared, laser radar, synthetic aperture radar, and millimeter wave radar autonomous seekers further increases the flexibility, range, and effectiveness of guided bombs.

Powerlift--Getting to Desert Storm by Doug Menarchik Pdf

Logistics, the movement of forces to battlefields, their supply, and on-going support, is critical to military success. Although this principle is theoretically accepted, the importance of being well-prepared to rapidly transport troops and supplies to distant crisis points has not been complemented, as Menarchik shows, by adequate lift capabilities. The author uses the six-month buildup to Desert Storm as proof that the United States needs to increase the priority of logistics in strategy and improve its strategic transport capabilities, especially surge strategic lift. Current transport capabilities will not be positioned or structured to respond effectively to the contingencies associated with America's growing responsibilities given the realities of the New World Order. Menarchik, himself an experienced pilot, policy planner, and operational commander, clearly demonstrates that Powerlift directly affects choices, timing, strategy development and implementation, and sweeping policy options. He shows that although combat strategy and tactics receive high profile attention it is Lift capability and capacity as a prerequisite that is fundamental to attaining objectives. Readers will learn where, how, and why America needs to improve its capabilities.

Desert Storm Marines by Jeff Dacus Pdf

From an historian and columnist in Leatherneck and Armor magazines, this is the exciting narrative account—based on interviews, first-person accounts, and official documents—of a group of Marine reservists during 1991’s Operation Desert Shield/Storm. In this war, thousands of reservists are called up for the first time since the Korean War. The Marines of Bravo Company, 4th Tank Battalion, are hastily trained and sent into action leading the effort to free Kuwait. Defeating the Iraqis in battle after battle, the Marines reach Kuwait City, accomplishing their objective. Only a few weeks later, they are back home at their former jobs. During their deployment they face enemy tanks, mines, and artillery as well as their own bureaucracy, petty jealousies, and one officer that fails to live up to his oath. Their superior officers make debatable decisions, and the men are often unsupported. In the end, they find the support they need, the leadership they lack, and a comradeship comparable to historic units like the Band of Brothers, the Old Breed, Knights Templar, and Washington’s Immortals.

Behind the Bits by Frank M. Oppenheim,Helen Swift Pdf

Behind the Bits provides a broad overview of the media field, addressing all areas, but focusing on television and the driving forces behind it. The authors unveil the interlocking network that structures power in the media world: business, government, and the increasingly concentrated upper echelons of the media itself. Beginning with an examination of truth in advertising, the discussion moves to an analysis of news editing and the different forces behind the release of information to the public through the media. Also analyzed is the increasing effect of electronic technology on the media and where it may be headed in the next century. The book's practical nature provides questions for discussion with each chapter and suggestions for a more critical evaluative attitude toward the media.
