Behind Time by Gerald Rochelle Pdf

First published in 1998, this volume responded to and evaluated criticisms of McTaggart’s atemporal philosophy of time. Established philosophical positions on time had positioned themselves in relation to either the A Series (past, present and future) or the B Series (earlier and later). McTaggart considered both series untenable and proposed his own, atemporal C Series. Beginning with an overview of McTaggart’s position, Gerald Rochelle attempts to reinforce the seriousness of, and think beyond, McTaggart’s attempt to describe a world without time through an assessment of McTaggart’s criticisms and his suggested alternative. Rochelle argues that McTaggart’s atemporal world constitutes a strong foundation for a new theory on time which breaks away from the existing philosophical models of temporality.

Living Behind Time by J.B. Hogan Pdf

“Most of us are living behind time: trapped in some phase of our past like an insect in amber.” So says Frank Mason, protagonist of Living Behind Time, a pre-9/11 on the road story with a big twist. Evoking echoes of the 1950s Beats, Frank Mason, the protagonist, reverses the standard east-west American journey by going west to east. Leaving his home in San Diego, California, he makes a solo cross-country trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Along the way, he revisits friends and locations from the past. He encounters a cult in the California desert, acts as a decoy to get immigrants into Arizona, connects with old friends in Boulder, Colorado and Columbia, Missouri. There’s a serio-comic meetup near Kansas City with a friend who’s taken up cultivating cannabis. He then reengages with an old girlfriend in Memphis, but reluctantly goes on to the Gulf Coast and Pensacola where an older couple nearly adopts him to make up for the loss of their own son. After an eventful stop with friends near Raleigh, North Carolina, Frank’s cross-country trek concludes in Myrtle Beach, where he tries to process the recent discoveries he has made about himself and the nation’s recent past. In the end, as he prepares to retrace his steps yet again, he learns that no matter who we are individually or as a country, there is still hope in a shared future.

Leave No One Behind by Homi Kharas,John W. McArthur,Izumi Ohno Pdf

The ambitious 15-year agenda known as the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in 2015 by all members of the United Nations, contains a pledge that "no one will be left behind." This book aims to translate that bold global commitment into an action-oriented mindset, focused on supporting specific people in specific places who are facing specific problems. In this volume, experts from Japan, the United States, and other countries address a range of challenges faced by people across the globe, including women and girls, smallholder farmers, migrants, and those living in extreme poverty. These are many of the people whose lives are at the heart of the aspirations embedded in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. They are the people most in need of such essentials as health care, quality education, decent work, affordable energy, and a clean environment. This book is the result of a collaboration between the Japan International Cooperation Research Institute and the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings. It offers practical ideas for transforming "leave no one behind" from a slogan into effective actions which, if implemented, will make it possible to reach the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In addition to policymakers in the field of sustainable development, this book will be of interest to academics, activists, and leaders of international organizations and civil society groups who work every day to promote inclusive economic and social progress.
