Beisbol on the Air by Jorge Iber Pdf

Both the U.S. population and Major League Baseball rosters have seen dramatic demographic changes over the past 50 years. The nation and the sport are becoming multilingual, with Spanish the unofficial second language. Today, 21 of 30 MLB teams broadcast at least some games in Spanish. Filling a gap in the literature of baseball, this collection of new essays examines the history of the game in Spanish, from the earliest locutores who called the plays for Latin American audiences to the League's expansion into cities with large Latino populations--Los Angeles, Houston and Miami to name a few--that made talented sportscasters for the fanaticos a business necessity.

Baseball Over the Air by Tony Silvia Pdf

This narrative contains the documentation and interpretation of two imaginative pastimes (radio and baseball) and illuminates each in a unique manner. It integrates radio and baseball historically, sociologically, and culturally using the common themes of imaginative expression. This book is a unique approach into the magic of radio's imaginative power. Broadcasting baseball on the radio has brought many millions of Americans an imaginative link to a game that is built upon recollections of athletic achievement that ring far truer in our "sweet imaginations." Through the use of our imaginations, we can see the game itself as more than just a game, but a gateway to an imaginative realm beyond the reality of everyday life.

Viva Baseball! by Samuel Octavio Regalado Pdf

Lively and anecdotal, Viva Baseball! chronicles the struggles of Latin American professional baseball players in the United States from the late 1800s to the present. Even as "Fernandomania" raged in 1981, most Latin players felt lonely, shunned, and forgotten. Samuel Regalado reveals the shocking racism faced by these immigrant athletes in a white culture. Only a burning desire to succeed and a grim determination to leave behind the grinding poverty of their homelands could have driven these men to continue in the face of overwhelming hostility. In addition to mining the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library in Cooperstown, New York, and the Sporting News archives, Regalado conducted interviews with some twenty-five Latin baseball stars, among them Felipe Alou, Orlando Cepeda, and Tony Oliva.

Velvet Barrios by Alicia Gasper De Alba Pdf

In Chicana/o popular culture, nothing signifies the working class, highly-layered, textured, and metaphoric sensibility known as "rasquache aesthetic" more than black velvet art. The essays in this volume examine that aesthetic by looking at icons, heroes, cultural myths, popular rituals, and border issues as they are expressed in a variety of ways. The contributors dialectically engage methods of popular cultural studies with discourses of gender, sexuality, identity politics, representation, and cultural production. In addition to a hagiography of "locas santas," the book includes studies of the sexual politics of early Chicana activists in the Chicano youth movement, the representation of Latina bodies in popular magazines, the stereotypical renderings of recipe books and calendar art, the ritual performance of Mexican femaleness in the quinceañera, and mediums through which Chicano masculinity is measured.

Mexican American Baseball in Los Angeles by Francisco E. Balderrama,Richard A. Santillan Pdf

Images of Baseball: Mexican American Baseball in Los Angeles celebrates the flourishing culture of the great pastime in East Los Angeles and other communities where a strong sense of Mexican identity and pride was fostered in a sporting atmosphere of both fierce athleticism and social celebration. From 1900, with the establishment of the Mexican immigrant community, to the rise of Fernandomania in the 1980s, baseball diamonds in greater Los Angeles were both proving grounds for youth as they entered their educations and careers, and the foundation for the talented Forty-Sixty Club, comprised of players of at least 40, and often over 60, years of age. These evocative photographs look back on the great Mexican American teams and players of the 20th century, including the famous Chorizeros--the proclaimed "Yankees of East L.A."

The Integration of the Pacific Coast League by Amy Essington Pdf

While Jackie Robinson’s 1947 season with the Brooklyn Dodgers made him the first African American to play in the Major Leagues in the modern era, the rest of Major League Baseball was slow to integrate while its Minor League affiliates moved faster. The Pacific Coast League (PCL), a Minor League with its own social customs, practices, and racial history, and the only legitimate sports league on the West Coast, became one of the first leagues in any sport to completely desegregate all its teams. Although far from a model of racial equality, the Pacific Coast states created a racial reality that was more diverse and adaptable than in other parts of the country. The Integration of the Pacific Coast League describes the evolution of the PCL beginning with the league’s differing treatment of African Americans and other nonwhite players. Between the 1900s and the 1930s, team owners knowingly signed Hawaiian players, Asian players, and African American players who claimed that they were Native Americans, who were not officially banned. In the post–World War II era, with the pressures and challenges facing desegregation, the league gradually accepted African American players. In the 1940s individual players and the local press challenged the segregation of the league. Because these Minor League teams integrated so much earlier than the Major Leagues or the eastern Minor Leagues, West Coast baseball fans were the first to experience a more diverse baseball game.

Mexican American Baseball in East Los Angeles by Richard A. Santillán, Richard Peña, Teresa M. Santillán, Al Padilla and Bob Lagunas Pdf

Mexican American Baseball in East Los Angeles highlights the unforgettable teams, players, and coaches who graced the hallowed fields of East Los Angeles between 1917 and 2016 and brought immense joy and honor to their neighborhoods. Off the field, these players and their families helped create the multibillion-dollar wealth that depended on their backbreaking labor. More than a game, baseball and softball were political instruments designed to promote and empower civil, political, cultural, and gender rights, confronting head-on the reactionary forces of prejudice, intolerance, sexism, and xenophobia. A century later, baseball and softball are more popular than ever in East Los Angeles. Dedicated coaches still produce gifted players and future community leaders. These breathtaking photographs and heartfelt stories shed unparalleled light to the long and rich history of baseball and softball in the largest Mexican American community in the United States.

The Spanish Lexicon of Baseball by John M. Chaston,Robert N. Smead Pdf

The Spanish Lexicon of Baseball: Semantics, Style, and Terminology draws on nearly 6,000 published MLB game summaries to explore the contours of baseball terminology in Spanish. Organized in a logical sequence that corresponds to various aspects of baseball (field of play, player positions, getting on base, types and modes of hits, scoring, runs-batted-in, umpire involvement and calls, pitching, and defense), the work combines narrative style and illustrative examples with keen lexical analysis. The result is an entertaining and informative volume that is neither folksy nor linguistically overcomplicated.

Footprints in the Clay by James Wyers Pdf

Footprints in the Clay is a fictional account of the Fuller family and their exploits in the mid nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. The Fullers were a proud close-knit family who, over a period of decades, moved from Maryland and Virginia into the Carolinas and finally Georgia and Alabama. One of the early family leaders proudly proclaimed, "I have left my footprints in the clay of many places, never once being forced to move." Jim Fuller and redhead cousin Charley Butts, after a series of events, find themselves in situations where their freedom is at stake. Although Footprints is primarily a fictional work, many of the events described are historical fact, although some are little known or forgotten. Join the feisty cousins as they take their wild ride from the Spanish-American War through the first decade of the twentieth century.
