Bellport Village and Brookhaven Hamlet by Victor Principe Pdf

When Capt. Thomas Bell came to the old Brewster Plantation in the 1820s, he recognized its potential as an important seaport. The place, formerly known as Occumbomuck, lay with nearby Fire Place opposite an inlet on the barrier island to the south. Bell's vision never materialized; however, the area soon had admirers who made it one of the earliest summer destinations in Suffolk County. So it remains-periodically rediscovered as a summer haven by a succession of scientists, writers, artists, moguls, and intellectuals, and long-cherished by its permanent residents. With more than two hundred images, most of them never previously published, Bellport Village and Brookhaven Hamlet visits the late 1800s and the first half of the 1900s, capturing the buildings, people, activities, and events that defined this special area. Old houses at the early heart of the settlements are not just charming; some of them were home to fascinating people: Birdsall Otis Edey, poet and suffragist; Oliver Hazard Perry Robinson, inventor of the ball bearing; William Glackens, Ashcan school artist and summer resident; and others. As Brookhaven Hamlet remained quiet and rural, Bellport Village became a year-round resort with fancy hotels, such as the Bay House, the Goldthwaite, the Wyandotte, and the Bellport, and an exclusive beach club known as the Old Inlet Club. Although the area has always attracted the famous and prominent, it was also home to the creative and entrepreneurial who made their mark locally.

UnHampton by Victor Principe Pdf

To truly understand what makes Bellport, New York, USA the village it is, it helps to be familiar with the local history of preservation and conservation. Victor Principe has gathered in one volume the what, when, where, and who, to tell a story about discovery, development, change, maturity, and memory that underlay our experience of this area today. It wasn't just luck. As Bellport emerged as a full-fledged summer place in the later part of the 19th century, awareness that its charms relied on more than its resort-like amenities became evident. It was loved because of what Captain Bell's generation had left behind: houses and streets nestled on an elevation overlooking the bay. As Bellport grew, respect and admiration for what had come before informed what was built after, and that is why, Victor argues, Bellport looks the way it does today. Because this tiny village, and the hamlet next door, endeavored to keep their characters more or less the way they had always been, they endowed upon themselves a very strong sense of place that would survive both depression and suburbanization. As change swirled around them, they, as a consequence, became ever more distinct. Following generations were determined to maintain this sense of place, despite the inexorable post-war growth of Long Island and the obscurity that befell this once popular summer place. But by the late 20th century, social forces challenged that determination - and quality of life - as it became clear instinct alone could no longer be relied upon to preserve what made Bellport and the hamlet unique.

Long Island Beaches by Kristen J. Nyitray Pdf

For centuries, Long Island's beaches have provided sustenance, relaxation, and inspiration. The coastline is renowned for its sandy Atlantic Ocean surf beaches, calm bayfront beaches, and rugged north shore Long Island Sound beaches. First inhabited by Native Americans, the area was called Sewanhacky ("Isle of Shells") in reverence to the offerings received where the water met the land. Drawing from the archives of local libraries, historical societies, museums, and private collections, Long Island Beaches presents a curated selection of vintage postcards illustrating the diversity of Nassau and Suffolk Counties' beautiful shores. Rare photographs and maps accompany the postcards to provide historical context. Through extensive research, author Kristen J. Nyitray documents a facet of Long Island's social and cultural history and the lure of its picturesque beaches.

Parks of the 21st Century by Victoria Newhouse,Alex Pisha Pdf

We are in the midst of a worldwide golden age of park creation, and featured here are powerfully telling examples at the forefront of this renaissance. Parks are essential to our well-being; this has never been clearer than it is today, and a recent surge of park development offers us much to celebrate. Parks of the 21st Century presents 52 parks in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Europe, and China that have turned despoiled and polluted land (including former factories, railroads, and industrial waterfronts) into beneficial landscapes. Landscape architects have been referred to as “the first environmentalists,” and Parks of the 21st Century shows how parks are being designed as proactive, dynamic green spaces. The High Line in New York is an early example of how an obsolete railroad could be transformed. Opened in 2009, it now attracts nearly 8 million visitors a year. In addition to providing public open space, these renewed landscapes offer economic revitalization and large-scale environmental improvement. Among the parks featured in this book are designs by well-known professionals such as James Corner Field Operations, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Kongjian Yu/Turenscape, and Catherine Mosbach.

The Knapps Lived Here by Ken Spooner Pdf

On a Sunday afternoon in 1959, in a small town on Long Island, 11 year old Ken Spooner watched along with most everyone as his personal playhouse, the Knapp Mansion, burned to the ground. Over 40 years passed before he would write a short story memoir of that day, triggering a very long journey through the first decade of the 21st century, to discover just who the Knapps were (no one seemed to know) and to find out who the arsonist was (that was the easy part). Through a folksy interwoven narrative, the reader discovers, as he did in realtime, the unwritten history of one of the Highest-Society, Lowest-Profile families America's gilded age has ever produced. Travel inside the many Knapp mansions, where 5 US Presidents and many icons of the 19th & 20th centuries were guests. This is Spooner's third book.
