Berlin's Hollow Homes by Trevor Carroll Pdf

Stumbling upon Berlin's gruesome past. From 1933 to 1945, Germany was gripped by Nazi tyranny. During those turbulent years many minorities suffered. Amongst them were the non-Aryan, political opponents, trade unionists, the disabled, homosexuals and ...the Jews. Any person who opposed the regime or did not fit their racial profile was persecuted or murdered. Berlin is one of Trevor Carroll's favourite cities. In recent years, he happened upon the largest decentralised memorial in the world - Stolpersteine or 'Stumble Stones'. Intrigued, he started researching the stories behind each Stolperstein that rests among the cobblestones outside that victim's final home of choice. The Stolperstein, a unique brass plaque is stamped with its victim's name. Follow Trevor as he stumbles from one Stolperstein to the next, uncovering the stories of some of the many who were taken by the Nazis. He uncovers stories of sacrifice, bravery and survival and the few who evaded Hitler's bloodlust.

Architecture for Housing by Djordje Stojanović Pdf

New fundamentals for designing future-oriented housing This book shows how architectural design can improve housing. It looks at 14 innovative multiunit dwelling projects through the lenses of current research on urban housing systems, driven by questions on social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Residential buildings designed for diverse cultural contexts are brought together and examined according to spatial antonyms: the individual and communal, the interior and exterior, and the determined and undetermined, to create a resource for future architectural practice. The book concentrates on design decisions and incorporates rich illustrations and conversations with architects and residents. It follows a series of talks curated by the Melbourne School of Design to extend the debate on the missing links between architectural practice and housing research. New fundamentals for designing future-oriented housing In-detail portraits of 14 impactful multi-unit dwelling projects by international architecture offices A rich set of illustrations created exclusively for this book

In Defense of Housing by Peter Marcuse,David Madden Pdf

In every major city in the world there is a housing crisis. How did this happen and what can we do about it? Everyone needs and deserves housing. But today our homes are being transformed into commodities, making the inequalities of the city ever more acute. Profit has become more important than social need. The poor are forced to pay more for worse housing. Communities are faced with the violence of displacement and gentrification. And the benefits of decent housing are only available for those who can afford it. In Defense of Housing is the definitive statement on this crisis from leading urban planner Peter Marcuse and sociologist David Madden. They look at the causes and consequences of the housing problem and detail the need for progressive alternatives. The housing crisis cannot be solved by minor policy shifts, they argue. Rather, the housing crisis has deep political and economic roots—and therefore requires a radical response.

Berlin Coquette by Jill Suzanne Smith Pdf

During the late nineteenth century the city of Berlin developed such a reputation for lawlessness and sexual licentiousness that it came to be known as the "Whore of Babylon." Out of this reputation for debauchery grew an unusually rich discourse around prostitution. In Berlin Coquette, Jill Suzanne Smith shows how this discourse transcended the usual clichés about prostitutes and actually explored complex visions of alternative moralities or sexual countercultures including the "New Morality" articulated by feminist radicals, lesbian love, and the "New Woman." Combining extensive archival research with close readings of a broad spectrum of texts and images from the late Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, Smith recovers a surprising array of productive discussions about extramarital sexuality, women’s financial autonomy, and respectability. She highlights in particular the figure of the cocotte (Kokotte), a specific type of prostitute who capitalized on the illusion of respectable or upstanding womanhood and therefore confounded easy categorization. By exploring the semantic connections between the figure of the cocotte and the act of flirtation (of being coquette), Smith’s work presents flirtation as a type of social interaction through which both prostitutes and non-prostitutes in Imperial and Weimar Berlin could express extramarital sexual desire and agency.

The Conservation Movement by Miles Glendinning Pdf

Shortlisted for the 2014 SAHGB Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion. Certainly, ancient structures have long been treated with care and reverence in many societies, including classical Rome and Greece. But only in modern Europe and America, in the last two centuries, has this care been elaborated and energised into a forceful, dynamic ideology: a 'Conservation Movement', infused with a sense of historical destiny and loss, that paradoxically shared many of the characteristics of Enlightenment modernity. Miles Glendinning's new book authoritatively presents, for the first time, the entire history of architectural conservation, and traces its dramatic fluctuations in ideas and popularity, ending by questioning whether its recent international ascendancy can last indefinitely.
