Introduction to Watershed Development by Robert Lawrence France Pdf
"Sprawl" - the spread of development from urban centers into the countryside - is recognized as one of the most serious threats to watershed functionality and health. Introduction to Watershed Development: Understanding and Managing the Impacts of Sprawl presents a logical framework to measure, minimize, and manage the problem of development. From the viewpoint of understanding the responses of watersheds to sprawl, this book addresses issues such as: how water bodies are linked to the land, what the horizon issues and problems are in watershed management, which surveying approaches can be used to monitor the change to watersheds, and how new, water-sensitive developments can be planned. Exploring what landscape architecture approaches cna be used to mitigate the problems of development, Introduction to Watershed Development is Robert L. France's distinctive and extremely well-informed perspective on watershed management, culled from the author's many years of research, scholarship, consulting, and teaching. -- from back cover.

Beyond Backyard Environmentalism by Archon Fung,Bradley Karkkainen Pdf
"When we think of environmental action, we draw upon images from the disaster of Love Canal or from A Civil Action - stories of lone activists fighting the government or some corporation against all odds. In their provocative essay, Sabel, Fung, and Karkkainen demonstrate that an effective alternative is emerging. Before environmental disasters occur, citizen groups are collaborating with experts, business leaders, and local and federal governments to figure out what is best for their own neighborhoods. These examples point to more than successful environmental action: they represent a model of grassroots democracy that can be applied to the needs of any community"--Back cover.

Evaluating and Conserving Green Infrastructure Across the Landscape by Karen Firehock,Green Infrastructure Center Inc Pdf
This is the New York State edition of the GIC's guide to evaluating and conserving green infrastructure (GI) across the landscape. It provides an historical background to GI, as well as practical steps for creating GI maps and plans for a community. It discusses issues around evaluating green assets, public involvement in the mapping process, and the practical steps in bringing together GIS information into a useful format. It draws from twelve field tests GIC has conducted over the past six years in a diversity of ecological and political conditions, at multiple scales, and in varied development patterns – from wildlands and rural areas to suburbs, cities and towns. This guide is intended to help people make land management decisions which recognize the interdependence of healthy people, strong economies and a vibrant, intact and biologically diverse landscape. Green infrastructure consists of our environmental assets – which GIC also calls ‘natural assets’ – and they should be included in planning processes. Planning to conserve or restore green infrastructure ensures that communities can be vibrant, healthful and resilient. Having clean air and water, as well as nature-based recreation, attractive views and abundant local food, depends upon considering our environmental assets as part of everyday planning. Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Water Science and Technology Board,Committee on Reducing Stormwater Discharge Contributions to Water Pollution Pdf
The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
