Between the Fence and the Forest by Jennifer Rahim Pdf

Comparing herself to a douen, a mythical being from the Trinidadian forests whose head and feet face in different directions, Jennifer Rahim's poems explore states of uncertainty both as sources of discomfort and of creative possibility. The poems explore a Trinidad finely balanced between the forces of rapid urbanisation and the constantly encroaching green chaos of tropical bush, whose turbulence regularly threatens a fragile social order, and whose people, as the descendants of slaves and indentured labourers, are acutely resistant to any threat to clip their wings and fence them in. In her own life, Rahim explores the contrary urges to a neat security and to an unfettered sense of freedom and her attraction to the forest 'where tallness is not the neighbour's fences/ and bigness is not the swollen houses/ that swallow us all'. It is, though, a place where the bushplanter 'seeing me grow branches/ draws out his cutting steel and slashes my feet/ since girls can never become trees'. Jennifer Rahim is Trinidadian. She also writes short fiction and criticism. She is currently Senior Lecturer at The Liberal Arts Department, The University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan Pdf

In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power. And, when the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. Now, she must choose between her village and her future, between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death? [STAR] "A bleak but gripping story...Poignant and powerful."-Publishers Weekly, Starred "A postapocalyptic romance of the first order, elegantly written from title to last line."-Scott Westerfeld, author of the Uglies series and Leviathan "Intelligent, dark, and bewitching, The Forest of Hands and Teeth transitions effortlessly between horror and beauty. Only one of the Unconsecrated could put this book down."-Justine Larbalestier, author of How to Ditch Your Fairy

The Enchantment of Gardens by Ruth Ammann Pdf

Ancient wisdom tells us that gardens have a healing, nourishing effect on the human soul and body. The garden belongs to the great archetype of life and is one of the few big archetypal images that are experienced primarily as positive. This positive experience is significant because the garden is a part of the natural and cultural human environment, and thus, is particularly influential in the interaction between human beings and their environment.

Daring by Jimmy W. Wharton Pdf

Beth Baris had learned to survive in the slums where she'd lived all her life, but she is suddenly thrust among the elite service members of the Spacefleet of the Six Worlds. The skills that allowed her to survive in the slums are no longer relevant. Aletha Landish, an admiral in Spacefleet is instrumental in Beth's sudden change of lifestyle. Aletha had become her surrogate mother before she disappeared, and as with her first appearance, Beth is surprised by the demands the woman makes of her. She is fifteen years old, and Aletha wants her to join Spacefleet! Abiding Aletha's wishes, Beth works very hard to complete the hellish second phase of her training, and discovers she has just completed Officers Candidate School. Lieutenant Robert Jacobs, a young man with secrets of his own, makes her life aboard ship bearable. He also makes it interesting when he becomes sick while their captain is drunk, and she is thrust into the Captain's Chair when they suddenly come under attack. With a Laserian Battle Cruiser bearing down on them, Beth is required to make a decision. Should she comply with the standard operating procedure for the ship, or should she follow her instincts when they're based on what she's read rather than what she was taught at the academy?
