Beverages De Luxe (Classic Reprint) by George R. Washburne Pdf

Excerpt from Beverages De Luxe As compared with the immense output of France and Italy, our annual production of about gallons is small, but it must not be forgotten that it has taken those two European countries nearly years to plant their extensive vineyards and create a world-wide market for their wines. Pliny, who is so rich in precious information on the agricultural and social advances in Italy, tells us that Italy opened her hills and plains to the triumphal entrance to the god Dionysus about 120 years B. C., and the cultivation of the grape has gone on uninterrupted ly ever since. Every generation has poured forth new capital to enlarge its inheritance of vineyards. The vine was introduced into France by the conquering Roman legions and practically the same conditions as in Italy prevail there, only that a small area of the north of France does not produce grapes, while in Italy there is practically no section where grapes are not grown and wine made. The cultivation of the vine in Germany, which covers a comparatively small acreage when compared with Italy and France, commenced after the death of the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius Probus. He reigned from 276 to 282 A. D., and directed much of his attention to clearing Gaul of the Ger mans. For over eighteen centuries, therefore, the Germans have also been cultivating their hillside vineyards and winning fame with their fine white wines. Drinks of the World (Classic Reprint) by James Mew Pdf

Excerpt from Drinks of the World From Cradle to the Grave we need Drink, and we have not far to look for the reason, when we consider that at least seventy percent, of the human body is composed of water, to compensate the perpetual waste of which, a fresh supply is, of course, absolutely necessary. This is taken with our food (all solid nutriment containing some water), and by the drink we consume. But, as the largest constituent part of the body is fluid, so, naturally, its waste is larger than that of the solid; this fluid waste being enormous. Besides the natural losses, every breath we exhale is heavily laden with moisture, as breathing on a cold polished surface, or a cold day by condensing the breath, will show; whilst the twenty-eight miles of tubing disposed over the surface of the human body will evaporate, invisibly, two or three pounds of water daily. What to Drink by Bertha E. L. Stockbridge Pdf

Excerpt from What to Drink: The Blue Book of Beverages, Recipes and Directions for Making and Serving Non-Alcoholic Drinks for All Occasions The hostess 'of today will be called upon to serve drinks in her home more than formerly, I imagine, and it were well to go back to the habits and customs of our grand mothers and be prepared to serve a refreshing drink in an attractive manner at a moment's notice. To do this, one needs have a stock of syrups, either home made or commercial, as well as a supply of shrubs and Vinegars on hand. To-day's hostess does not hold up her hands in horror crying that she knows nothing of preparing these things, for she has learned a great deal about canning and pre serving in the last few years, so making syrups, Vinegars and shrubs will seem like child's play. If, however, she is inclined to think it an arduous task, let her turn to these recipes, and she will be convinced that the labor and the time expended bring their own reward in the satisfaction gained by knowing that one has served a delicious drink de lightfully made. The 12 Bottle Bar by David Solmonson,Lesley Jacobs Solmonson Pdf

It’s a system, a tool kit, a recipe book. It’s a surprising guide--tequila didn’t make the cut, and neither did bourbon, but genever did. And it’s a literate guide--describing with great liveliness everything from the importance of vermouth and bitters (the “salt and pepper” of mixology) to the story of a punch bowl so big it was stirred by a boy in a rowboat.

The Flowing Bowl by William Schmidt Pdf

Excerpt from The Flowing Bowl: When and What to Drink While having been active for a period of more than thirty years in the line of hotel and bar business, and having given my greatest care to mixed drinks particularly, I have found them to be great favorites among connoisseurs. Repeatedly the desire has been expressed to me as to where to obtain satisfactory and reliable information how to prepare such delicious mixtures. A great number of men received such information from me, as far as a few minutes conversation could teach anybody. The oftener, however, such questions were repeated, the more established became within me the conviction that there was among the public a general desire for a book containing all advices of such a kind. The result of this conviction is this book, that hereby is handed over to the public. Feeling that I had to place on the market only a first-class manual, in all its details and instructions, I have given it the most particular care and study. Utmost diligence and attention have assisted me to express my thoughts in clear and exact terms, so as to enable any one, even private persons, to understand and comprehend how to obtain the most satisfactory results. Beverages, Past and Present, Vol. 1 of 2 by Edward R. Emerson Pdf

Excerpt from Beverages, Past and Present, Vol. 1 of 2: An Historical Sketch of Their Production, Together With a Study of the Customs Connected With Their Use It had at first been planned to confine the book strictly to the subject of beverages, but, as the work progressed, so much interesting material was dis covered that it was decided to enlarge its scope, and not only to include a history of the origin of the various beverages, but also to give an account of some of the curious customs connected with their use. The author has striven to make the work as com prehensive and as accurate as possible, and, if there are any omissions or errors, these are not due to a lack of careful study and research. Nineteen Centuries of Drink in England by Richard Valpy French Pdf

Excerpt from Nineteen Centuries of Drink in England: A History The object of this work is to ascertain the part which Drink has played in the individual and national life of the English people. To this end, an inquiry is instituted into the beverages which have been in use, the customs in connection with their use, the drinking vessels in vogue, the various efforts made to control or prohibit the use, sale, manufacture, or importation of strong drink, whether proceeding from Church, or State, or both: the connection of the drink traffic with the revenue, together with incidental notices of banquets, feasts, the pledging of healths, and other relevant matter. Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) by Leo Tolstoy Pdf

Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) “There are as many kinds of love, as there are hearts.” Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) In the nineteenth century Russian high society, the ravishing, aristocratic Anna Karenina is married to Alexey Alexandrovitch Karenin, a senior statesman, twenty years her senior. But as her passionate and restless spirit compels her, she falls in love with Count Vronsky—a young and wealthy military officer. and now, Anna wants to break away from her cold marriage. Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) As Karenin refuses to separate, Anna is doomed. Caught between the rigorous societal norms, laws and the Orthodox Church, she is consumed by guilt and isolation. What becomes of Anna as she is left tormented? Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) With intricately crafted characters chafed between their passions and Russian mores, Anna Karenina explores the feudal Russia of that period. Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) Admired to date, Tolstoy regarded it as his first true novel. it has been adapted into films, operas, ballet and television and radio dramas and continues to ensnare its audience. Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) Widely considered one of the best novels ever written, Anna Karenina is the tragic story of the aristocratic Anna’s doomed affair with the wealthy Count Vronsky. Reflecting Russian morals of the time, as well as Tolstoy’s personal feelings on infidelity, Anna Karenina explores themes of passion and fidelity, the impact that social norms have on personal choice, and the ramifications of choosing a life outside of that deemed acceptable by society. Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) HarperPerennial Classics brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. Look for more titles in the HarperPerennial Classics collection to build your digital library.Described by William Faulkner as the best novel ever written and by Fyodor Dostoevsky as “flawless,” Anna Karenina tells of the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and thereby exposes herself to the hypocrisies of society. Set against a vast and richly textured canvas of nineteenth-century Russia, the novel's seven major characters create a dynamic imbalance, playing out the contrasts of city and country life and all the variations on love and family happiness. Anna Karenina: (Classics Deluxe Edition) While previous versions have softened the robust and sometimes shocking qualities of Tolstoy's writing, Pevear and Volokhonsky have produced a translation true to his powerful voice. This authoritative edition, which received the PEN Translation Prize and was an Oprah Book Club™ selection, also includes an illuminating introduction and explanatory notes. Beautiful, vigorous, and eminently readable, this Anna Karenina will be the definitive text for fans of the film and generations to come. Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink by John F. Mariani Pdf

First published in 1983, John Mariani's Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink has long been the go-to book on all things culinary. Last updated in the late 1990s, it is now back in a handsome, fully illustrated revised and expanded edition that catches readers up on more than a decade of culinary evolution and innovation: from the rise of the Food Network to the local food craze; from the DIY movement, with sausage stuffers, hard cider brewers, and pickle makers on every Brooklyn or Portland street corner; to the food truck culture that proliferates in cities across the country. Whether high or low food culture, there's no question American food has changed radically in the last fourteen years, just as the market for it has expanded exponentially. In addition to updates on food trends and other changes to American gastronomy since 1999, for the first time the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink will include biographical entries, both historical and contemporary, from Fanny Farmer and Julia Child to the Galloping Gourmet and James Beard to current high-profile players Mario Batali and Danny Meyer, among more than one hundred others. And no gastronomic encyclopedia would be complete without recipes. Mariani has included five hundred classics, from Hard Sauce to Scrapple, Baked Alaska to Blondies. An American Larousse Gastronomique, John Mariani's completely up-to-date encyclopedia will be a welcome acquisition for a new generation of food lovers.
