Beware! The Cascading Has Arrived by David Reilly Pdf

This book had its origins in the many natural disasters that seemed to be increasing in number and intensity in recent years. An ever-increasing loss of life, spiraling economic costs and losses, and a lack of national, coordinated recognition and understanding of the dangers these natural disasters foretold were evident. Additional concerns included a political attitude that ignored the realities of the dire future impacts of climate change. Priority for short-term issues which has taken precedence over the need for long-term policies, including financing, that address the needed changes were evident. Many of the requirements and procedures necessary for these changes will require attitudinal and behavioral changes. These will necessitate taking care of our oceans. Changes in land use will most likely need the migration of large segments of our population and will not be popular. Although many of the changes will not be happily received and will require significant funding allocations, the alternatives to not taking action are far worse. Natural disasters of worse magnitude than we have experienced will continue to occur, and the cascading effects will be beyond imagination. An approach to preparation that involves planning and funding outside of political control, involving local, state, regional, and national involvement is necessary. Cadres of high school graduates and college-age students who are willing to serve a one-to two-year service program could provide a ready force to assist in dealing with the planning of pre-event needs and helping with dealing with the aftermath of disasters should be implemented.

Climate Change and Its Role in Forming the Insidious Relationship Between Natural Disasters and Social Disorders with a Prediction for the Future by David Reilly Pdf

This book explores the relationship between the increased frequency, types, and severity of natural disasters and the significant increase in the number of social and violent disorders. With natural disasters come feelings of a lack of control over one’s life and a fear of being helpless. Many times, people worry about providing for their families. While it is clear that there is a correlational relationship, we can’t predict the type of social disorders that will result from natural disasters. To make headway, we must move from a linear perspective to a nonlinear one, focusing on system interactions instead of individual disasters. To achieve this goal, we must develop a far broader perspective about what needs to be accomplished than the limited one we have now—one that acknowledges the need to remove legislative bodies from the equation. Consider bold proposals to change the way we think, bolster our infrastructure, and curb the problems that plague us with the insights in Climate Change Natural Disasters, and Social Disorder.

Walkable City by Jeff Speck Pdf

Jeff Speck has dedicated his career to determining what makes cities thrive. And he has boiled it down to one key factor: walkability. The very idea of a modern metropolis evokes visions of bustling sidewalks, vital mass transit, and a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly urban core. But in the typical American city, the car is still king, and downtown is a place that's easy to drive to but often not worth arriving at. Making walkability happen is relatively easy and cheap; seeing exactly what needs to be done is the trick. In this essential new book, Speck reveals the invisible workings of the city, how simple decisions have cascading effects, and how we can all make the right choices for our communities. Bursting with sharp observations and real-world examples, giving key insight into what urban planners actually do and how places can and do change, Walkable City lays out a practical, necessary, and eminently achievable vision of how to make our normal American cities great again.

Cascade Smith by John Somerset Pdf

The exciting sequel to The Excalibur File. Named after her father’s favourite beer, Cascade Smith is born beautiful, which will shape her life. She grows up an ‘all Australian girl,’ progressing from her High-Country home through school, university, first love and sporting success – given her stunning looks, the perfect formula for ‘happily ever after.’ But that is not to be. The year 2024 sees the tragic death of her soul mate. Bad enough, but 2024 also heralds a worldwide financial crash, a return to the gold standard and the rise of a China intent on gold and territorial expansion. America’s NSA obtains the PLA plan for ‘Oceania Gold’ – a strategic blueprint to conquer the islands of the South Pacific and ultimately invade northern Australia on Christmas Day, 2030. Cascade is recruited into Wedgetail, ASIO’s clandestine black ops group, tasked to counter China’s MSS agents inserted into Australia to destabilise the defence effort and open the way for invasion. She and her fellow agents take on the MSS as an undermanned ADF prepares for the greatest naval battle since the Second World War – a battle Australia can never hope to win. Or can it?

On the High Line by Annik LaFarge Pdf

The most comprehensive, up-to-date, and acclaimed guide to the High Line by the leading expert on the history of the park—now in a fully revised edition Built atop a former freight railroad, the “park in the sky” is regularly cited as one of the premiere examples of adaptive reuse and quickly became one of New York’s most popular destinations, attracting more than 8 million visitors a year. This updated Third Edition of On the High Line— published to coincide with the fifteenth anniversary of the park’s opening—remains the definitive guide to the park that transformed an entire neighborhood and became an inspiration to cities around the globe. In short entries organized by roughly two city block sections, the guide provides rich details about everything in view on both sides of the park. Illustrated with more than 110 black & white photographs, it covers historic and modern architecture; plants and horticulture; and important industries and technological innovations that developed in the neighborhoods the park traverses, from book publishing and food distribution to the introduction of cold storage and the development of radar, the elevator, and talking movies. Updated to include newly opened sections of the park, this edition also features a new conversation pertaining to the more controversial side of the High Line’s story and how it became a poster child for the most grievous manifestations of gentrification and inequity in public spaces. Author Annik LaFarge provides a frank discussion on how the park’s leadership created a platform for discussing these issues and for advising other projects on how to work more inclusively and from a social justice and equity perspective. On the High Line serves as an educated travel companion, someone invisibly perched on a visitor’s shoulder who can answer every question, including what was here before, moving back in time through the early 20th century, the Industrial Revolution, and the colonial and pre-European times when this stretch of what we call Manhattan was home to the Lenape people and much of it was covered by the waters of the Hudson River. A companion website with more than 650 photos—historic, contemporary, rooftop and aerial—can be viewed at HighLineBook.com.
