A Guide to Biblical Commentaries and Reference Works by John F. Evans Pdf

A Guide to Biblical Commentaries and Reference Works, by John F. Evans, summarizes and briefly analyzes all recent and many older commentaries on each book of the Bible, giving insightful comments on the approach of each commentary and its interpretive usefulness especially for evangelical interpreters of the Bible. A Guide to Biblical Commentaries and Reference Works is essentially an annotated bibliography of hundreds of commentators. More scholarly books receive a longer, more detailed treatment than do lay commentaries, and highly recommended commentaries have their author’s names in bold. The author keeps up on the publication of commentaries and intends to update this book every three to four years.

The Crimson Path by Robert D. Finley Pdf

Have you ever wondered why John the Baptist introduced Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God? Why not introduce Him as the promised heir to the throne of King David? Why is a crimson path essential for the plan of redemption? This book will answer these questions and take the reader on a journey through the ages. This journey will reveal the foreshadows that foretell the redemptive mission of the Lamb of God. In this exposition, the foreshadows recorded in the Old Testament will be identified and the resemblance of each foreshadow will be correlated with the plan of fulfillment recorded in the New Testament.

Forgiving What You Can't Forget Study Guide by Lysa TerKeurst Pdf

If you've ever felt stuck in a cycle of unresolved pain, playing offenses over and over in your mind—if you've ever been hurt so badly that you don't know if you'll ever get past it—discover what the Bible really says about forgiveness and how to find the peace that comes from embracing it. Forgiveness is a major part of the Christian faith. But how do we actually put it into practice when we're the ones who've been hurt? We know God commands us to forgive each other. But, apart from simply saying the words, "I forgive you," many of us have unasked questions about it: How does it work? On our minds, souls, circumstances—what's actually happening when we forgive? Why is it so important, and what's the difference between forgiveness and simply moving on? When should I forgive, and are their exceptions? How can I find healing for myself, even if my act of forgiveness doesn't seem to change the person who hurt me? These are just some of the questions that bestselling author and teacher Lysa TerKeurst explores in this six-session video Bible study (DVD/digital downloads sold separately). This study will walk with you on a step-by-step process--through biblical answers, deep empathy, and the therapeutic insight that comes from Lysa's personal experiences--toward the grace of forgiveness and the freedom from the pain of past wrongs. Sessions include: What Am I Supposed to Do with All the Hurt? Your Mind, Your Mouth, Your Master The Divine Echo There’s Always a Meanwhile The Compounding Effect of Unforgiveness This Isn’t Easy, But It Is Good Designed for use with the Forgiving What You Can't Forget Video Study available on DVD or streaming video, sold separately.

Gustave Doré and the Modern Biblical Imagination by Sarah C. Schaefer Pdf

Gustave Doré and the Modern Biblical Imagination explores the role of biblical imagery in modernity through the lens of Gustave Doré (1832-83), whose work is among the most reproduced and adapted scriptural imagery in the history of Judeo-Christianity. First published in France in late 1865, Doré's Bible illustrations received widespread critical acclaim among both religious and lay audiences, and the next several decades saw unprecedented dissemination of the images on an international scale. In 1868, the Doré Gallery opened in London, featuring monumental religious paintings that drew 2.5 million visitors over the course of a quarter-century; when the gallery's holdings travelled to the United States in 1892, exhibitions at venues like the Art Institute of Chicago drew record crowds. The United States saw the most creative appropriations of Doré's images among a plethora of media, from prayer cards and magic lantern slides to massive stained-glass windows and the spectacular epic films of Cecile B. DeMille. This book repositions biblical imagery at the center of modernity, an era that has often been defined through a process of secularization, and argues that Doré's biblical imagery negotiated the challenges of visualizing the Bible for modern audiences in both sacred and secular contexts. A set of texts whose veracity and authority were under unprecedented scrutiny in this period, the Bible was at the center of a range of historical, theological, and cultural debates. Gustave Doré is at the nexus of these narratives, as his work established the most pervasive visual language for biblical imagery in the past two and a half centuries, and constitutes the means by which the Bible has persistently been translated visually.
