Meditations for Lent by Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet Pdf

Even three hundred years ago, believers found it difficult to sustain for forty days the proper Lenten spirit. That's why even then, countless Christians turned to the writings of Bishop Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704), whose great piety and simple eloquence won him renown as one of the greatest preachers of his time. From Bishop Bossuet's sermons and spiritual writings, believers drew ever greater Lenten wisdom and strength. Now translator Christopher Blum has selected from Bishop Bossuet's voluminous works fifty brief but remarkably powerful meditations that complement the daily readings at Mass during the Lenten season, thus offering to us the perfect companion for a thoughtful and fruitful Lent. If you read and meditate briefly on just one of them each day in Lent, I guarantee that this good French bishop's eloquence will soon have you not merely remembering the events of Christ's journey to His Crucifixion; it will have you spiritually walking with Him on that journey . . . which is precisely what we are called to do in Lent! With Bossuet, this Lent you will find yourself saying, "O Jesus! I present myself to you to make my journey in your company. O my Savior, receive your traveler! Here I am ready, holding on to nothing. Let me go with You to the Father." That's the fire that should burn in the heart of all Christians. This Lent, let Bishop Bossuet enkindle it in yours. Among the Meditations: God Alone Suffices Pray to God in Secret The Truth and the Life Tempted in the Desert The Sign of Jonah Love Your Enemies This Is My Beloved Son And You Will Be Forgiven The Wicked Tenants In Spirit and in Truth The Silence of Christ Priest, Prophet, and King Our Life, a Journey to God The Great Commandment I Was Hungry and You Fed Me The Love of God for Repentant Sinners Up to Jerusalem God, the Life of the Soul The Witness of the Baptist The Raising of Lazarus Jesus Is Persecuted The True Messiah The Anointing The Betrayal The Eucharist The Passion The Brevity of Life Washed of Our Sins A Sign of Contradiction No Man Ever Spoke Like This Man The Entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem To Unite Ourselves with Christ

Angels Celebrate by Marianne Dorman Pdf

This is the last volume in the set for Ordinary Time in the Christian Year and it completes a series of meditations for the whole year. For the weekday readings at Mass there is a two-year cycle. Over the two years there is a different first reading from the Scriptures whilst both years share the same Gospel readings. On Sundays there is a three-year cycle with the Gospel readings taken from Matthew, Mark, and Luke respectively. One of the ways we grow in our faith is by knowing the Scriptures well. Even if we do not attend Mass daily we can always meditate on the set readings. When we do this it will lead us into parts of our Bible that hitherto we may not have ventured. If digested properly they will undoubtedly prompt questions and raise topics for prayer and further research. This book is designed to help you to understand your Bible better and how it unveils the work of salvation by our loving God, beginning with the call of Abraham and His relationship with His chosen people. When the time was right God sent His Son into the world to continue God's redeeming love for all creation. So the Old Testament prepared the way for the coming of the Christ that is recorded in the New Testament. It is this part of the Bible that is particularly interesting for Christians today as it gives insight as to how those first Christians came to believe in Jesus as their Saviour and were baptised into His death. It also reveals many of the problems that beset the first Christians over morality, worship, and obligations. These are still relevant today. Thus we need to heed the advice of Paul and other Christian writers of the first century in how we live out the teachings of Christ.

Views from the Pew, Pulpit and Women Religious by Koncel Pdf

In his very personal account, Ed Koncel, a well read and thoughtful Catholic, shares his recollections of the church past, his frustrations with the church present and his hopes for Catholicism's more vibrant future.Robert McClory, author of As It Was in the BeginningEd Koncel writes from the perspective of a faithful son of the Church--faithful over the course of his long life. He writes with both passion and compassion in regard to the people and the proceedings of the Second Vatican Council and the developments since the Council. Obviously well read and actively involved in various groups working to make real the words and spirit of the documents of the Vatican II, he speaks with the authority of knowledge and personal experience and integrity. I believe he also speaks as one whose love of the Church motivates him to keep working for its coming to accept the full participation of all in the liturgical and governmental life of its people. Mr. Koncel strikes me as a man of hope--an extraordinary virtue in our time!Denise Wilkinson, SP, General Superior of the Sisters of Providence

Angels Celebrate by Marianne Dorman Pdf

This is the second volume of a three-volume set for Ordinary Time in the Christian Year. For the weekday readings at Mass there is a two-year cycle: Year A and Year B. Over the two years there is a different first reading from the Scriptures whilst both years share the same Gospel readings. On Sundays there is a three-year cycle. Ordinary Time has often been described as the growing season in the Christian Year. After having celebrated the major observances in our Lord's life over the span of five months or less, the rest of the year is devoted to our Lord's ministry rather than to events in his life. It is a time to discover how the early Christian communities remembered the teaching and preaching of the Lord in light of their own experiences. That preaching and experience we can read about in the earliest Christian documents in the genuine letters of St. Paul in the New Testament. At the centre of his preaching was Christ's death and resurrection, in which the baptised shared. Paul wrote his letters to deal with problems that arose in those first Christian communities. When we read the Pauline Letters we realise that not much has changed. Human nature is still basically the same and as a result the same problems that arose two thousand years ago we still have today. Hence St. Paul speaks also to us. As well as the Pauline Letters, Ordinary Time covers many other parts of our Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. By meditating on the daily set readings, our lives as Christians are enriched as we come to a deeper understanding of Scripture.
