Bibliography of the Writings of Charles Dickens by James Cook Pdf

Excerpt from Bibliography of the Writings of Charles Dickens: With Many Curious and Interesting Particulars Relating to His Works In the following list of the writings of Charles Dickens, the works of more importance are kept separate from the minor and miscellaneous productions; and the strictly chronological arrangement observed in the catalogue at the close of "Forster's Life of Dickens," has been avoided. The compilation has been made with the aid of a set of the various Works as they were originally published, in parts or volumes. The list furnishes the titles of the whole of Dickens's known writings, with notices of re-issues; together with such particulars as are necessary to give the Bibliophilist or Collector a thorough knowledge of the peculiarities of the several editions hitherto published, or in course of publication. Sketches by Boz: Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People. These sketches appeared at intervals during 1834, 1835, in the pages of the Monthly Magazine and the columns of the Morning Chronicle and Evening Chronicle, The sketch first published - "Mrs. Joseph Porter over the Way" - appeared in the Old Monthly Magazine for January, 1834. The signature "Boz" was first used by being attached to the second part or chapter of "The Boarding House" in the August number of the same Magazine - the previously-published sketches having appeared anonymously. In the "Life of Dickens" by R. S. Mackenzie (see page 61), it is stated that some of the "Sketches" originally appeared in Bell's Life in London. First Series, published in two vols., post 8vo, with sixteen Illustrations by George Cruikshank, Price one guinea. Preface dated "Furnival's Inn, February, 11836." London: John Macrone, St. James's Square. 1836. - Second Edition, same size and same publisher, with Preface, dated "Furnival's Inn, 1st August, 1836." - Third Edition, also similar to first in size and publisner, with the Prefaces to 1st and 2nd Editions. 1837. The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens and Their Values by John C. Eckel Pdf

Excerpt from The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens and Their Values: A Bibliography Nearly every collector of fine and rare books includes Dickens among his list of esteemed authors. As it has been written before, Dickens is essentially a collector's author, for the reason that his books in their original state make an irresistible appeal. To tell of the appearance of these is the purpose of this Bibliography. Due notice has been taken of the various issues of first editions, and the different points involved have been carefully assembled and explained. For the first time illustrations have been used in a Dickens bibliography to make clear such points as require them. Another feature relates to presentation copies, treated separately for the first time in any Biblio graphy. It was impossible to make this subject a complete one, though enough has been given to furnish a general idea of a number of association books and their extraordinary rise in prices. The Novels of Charles Dickens by Frederic G. Kitton Pdf

Excerpt from The Novels of Charles Dickens: A Bibliography and Sketch It is said that the stories of England's favourite novelist owe their popularity mainly to the fact that they appeal to the "masses" rather than to the "classes." This is probably true, for it was that vast majority of the "world's workers" to which Dickens extended his sympathy, being prompt to recognise in its midst noble instances of 'worth, manliness, and humanity which are there so often manifested. He loved his fellow-men, and by means of his wonderful romances did more to increase the social happiness and morality of the humbler members of the community than any writer of his time. The Life of Charles Dickens (Classic Reprint) by Frank T. Marzials Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of Charles Dickens From this time the career of Dickens was an almost continuous record of popular success. His books had a marvellous sale, and his readers were a vast multitude. It has been well said that, if not a great event in literature, he was yet a great event in history. He established and edited a periodical with what at that time was the largest circulation in the world. His readings in interpretation of his works added largely to his fortune, and even enhanced his fame. As a speaker he became noted for eloquence and was in constant demand on important oc casions. For more than thirty years he was one of the most conspicuous and, in spite of much detraction one of the most lauded among public characters, and at 1118 death men of eminence, and the English nation itself, paid him honours befitting such celebrity. His father, John Dickens, a clerk in the navy pay office, with a salary of 80l. a year, was then stationed in the Ports-mouth dockyard. The wife of the first Lord Houghton told Mr. Wemyss Reid that Mrs. Dickens, mother of John, was housekeeper at Crewe, and famous for her powers of story-telling (Wemyss Reid, in Daily News, 8 October, 1887). John Dickens had eight children by his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Charles Barrow, a lieutenant in the navy.
