One of the first transnational, feminist studies of Canada’s black beauty culture and the role that media, retail, and consumers have played in its development, Beauty in a Box widens our understanding of the politics of black hair. The book analyzes advertisements and articles from media—newspapers, advertisements, television, and other sources—that focus on black communities in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary. The author explains the role local black community media has played in the promotion of African American–owned beauty products; how the segmentation of beauty culture (i.e., the sale of black beauty products on store shelves labelled “ethnic hair care”) occurred in Canada; and how black beauty culture, which was generally seen as a small niche market before the 1970s, entered Canada’s mainstream by way of department stores, drugstores, and big-box retailers. Beauty in a Box uses an interdisciplinary framework, engaging with African American history, critical race and cultural theory, consumer culture theory, media studies, diasporic art history, black feminism, visual culture, film studies, and political economy to explore the history of black beauty culture in both Canada and the United States.
She was the unchallenged queen of the New York rock scene...Dorothy Parker of Max's Kansas City' - Rolling Stone From the pubs of the Sydney Push to New York's legendary nightclubs, Lillian Roxon set the pace for an era that changed the world. Born in Mussolini's Italy, she arrived as a child in Brisbane at the height of the Second World War. Audacious, independent and fiercely intelligent, by eighteen she was cutting her writing teeth in the colourful world of Sydney tabloid journalism and was a key member of the Sydney Push. She moved to New York in 1960, just in time for a cultural revolution that celebrated youth, sexual freedom, women's liberation - and rock and roll. Embracing the new scene with gusto, she became the centre of a circle that included Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, Jim Morrison and David Bowie. Linda Eastman confided in her about her first date with Paul, and Germaine Greer dedicated The Female Eunuch to her. Her Rock Encycylopedia, published in 1969, was the first book of its kind and established Roxon as a leading critic and chronicler of rock culture. When she died suddenly in 1973, she left behind a body of work full of the energy, irreverence and idealism of her times. Drawing on Roxon's personal papers and extensive interviews with those who knew her, Mother of Rock is a riveting portrait of an Australian trailblazer. It also contains a generous selection of Roxon's own writing, including material from her Rock Encyclopedia, which revolutionised the way rock music was perceived.
John Oliver Killens's landmark novel of social protest chronicles the lives of the Youngblood family and their friends in Crossroads, Georgia, from the turn of the century to the Great Depression. Its large cast of powerfully affecting characters includes Joe Youngblood, a tragic figure of heroic physical strength; Laurie Lee, his beautiful and strong-willed wife; Richard Myles, a young high school teacher from New York; and Robby, the Youngbloods' son, who takes the large risk of becoming involved in the labor movement.
Getting dumped for her best friend marks a low point in Tiffany Barlow's life, and the break-up does more than shake her confidence. A few hurtful words from her ex are enough to leave her wondering if, as a plus-sized woman, she's too big for anyone to want as a submissive. After moving across the country with the aim of starting over, Tiffany is determined to get in shape and begin a new life. As far as Lance Sawyer is concerned, the full-figured girl who shows up for a trial membership at his gym is the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. When Tiffany leaves in a snit after a misunderstanding, he's determined to make things right, and he offers her his services as a personal trainer. But this will be a very special form of training... Lance is no stranger to the age play lifestyle, and in Tiffany he sees a girl with a deep need for total submission. But first she'll have to get past her misconceptions about her weight, recognize her true beauty, and discover what it really means to be a little. Can Nick's loving care and strict discipline teach Tiffany that she can be big, beautiful, and little? Publisher's Note: Big Beautiful Little is an erotic romance novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes, age play, medical play, and more. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.

Follow the adventures of a young horse in Victorian England, beginning with his idyllic upbringing with his mother on a farm, to his short career as a carriage horse for a wealthy family, to his tough and often abusive work as a cab horse. From the kindest to the cruelest of owners, Black Beauty always tries to listen to his mother's advice and do his work with a good will. This book was hugely influential in cultivating public interest in making sure horses were treated without cruelty. An ardent advocate for animal welfare, English author Anna Sewell published her first and only novel in 1877, five months before her death. This unabridged version was taken from the 1911 American copyright edition.
A Creative Approach to Teaching Rhythm and Rhyme by Andy Croft Pdf
The content of this book is based on the Andy Croft's experience of working with children in over 400 UK schools and will provide teachers with ideas, games, examples and models that they can use in the classroom to encourage their children to become writers and readers through the practice of rhyme and rhythm. He strongly believes that you don't have to be 'good at English' to be able to enjoy the music of ordinary speech. Using rhythm and rhyme is a democratic creative act that is equally hard and equally easy for everyone. It has special rules which won't let you reach for the first word that comes into your head. Your words have to fit the pattern. You don't have to write anything down, but you do have to become a writer. And once you have become a writer, you might become a reader...
Being black and male is serious business, but its absurd contradictions are often too funny for words. In this award-winning book, Shawn Taylor deftly leads us on a no-holds-barred tour of his masculine development, acknowledging some deep but often hilarious truths about black men. This raw and spellbinding narrative, full of unexpected turns of phrase and shocking displays of vulnerability, contains powerful meditations on sexuality, romance, fatherhood, and violence. Unapologetic and sharply critical of the hatred and fear that American society harbors toward black men, Taylor brings the subject of black masculinity into the 21st century.
