Big Ears by Nichole T. Rustin,Sherrie Tucker Pdf

In jazz circles, players and listeners with “big ears” hear and engage complexity in the moment, as it unfolds. Taking gender as part of the intricate, unpredictable action in jazz culture, this interdisciplinary collection explores the terrain opened up by listening, with big ears, for gender in jazz. Essays range from a reflection on the female boogie-woogie pianists who played at Café Society in New York during the 1930s and 1940s to interpretations of how the jazzman is represented in Dorothy Baker’s novel Young Man with a Horn (1938) and Michael Curtiz’s film adaptation (1950). Taken together, the essays enrich the field of jazz studies by showing how gender dynamics have shaped the production, reception, and criticism of jazz culture. Scholars of music, ethnomusicology, American studies, literature, anthropology, and cultural studies approach the question of gender in jazz from multiple perspectives. One contributor scrutinizes the tendency of jazz historiography to treat singing as subordinate to the predominantly male domain of instrumental music, while another reflects on her doubly inappropriate position as a female trumpet player and a white jazz musician and scholar. Other essays explore the composer George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept as a critique of mid-twentieth-century discourses of embodiment, madness, and black masculinity; performances of “female hysteria” by Les Diaboliques, a feminist improvising trio; and the BBC radio broadcasts of Ivy Benson and Her Ladies’ Dance Orchestra during the Second World War. By incorporating gender analysis into jazz studies, Big Ears transforms ideas of who counts as a subject of study and even of what counts as jazz. Why Elephants Have Big Ears by Chris Lavers Pdf

Why Elephants Have Big Ears is the result of one man's lifelong quest to understand why the creatures of the earth appear and act as they do. In a wry manner and personal tone, Chris Lavers explores and solves some of nature's most challenging evolutionary mysteries, such as why birds are small and plentiful, why rivers and lakes are dominated by the few remaining large reptiles, why most of the large land-dwellers are mammals, and many more.

Mokanshan by James H Irwin Pdf

Shanghai 1936. Word reaches the newsroom of the North China Daily-News that King Edward VIII is planning to marry an American divorcee, Mrs. Wallis Simpson, a one-time resident of Shanghai's International Settlement. Wallis Simpson has a thin but interesting file in the records of the Shanghai Municipal Police Department containing details of her activities in China-opium smoking, heroin peddling, learning the tricks of the trade at a high-class brothel and posing naked for naughty postcards. The lost negatives of Simpson immediately become sought after by the Shanghai police acting on behalf of the British Government, the Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the notorious Green Gang, agents of Adolf Hitler and Emily Hahn, the China Coast correspondent for the New Yorker magazine. Instead they end up in the clumsy hands of two naive young Americans, Eli Swan and Luther Flood, who have little idea of their international significance or how much trouble they are in when they take the negatives with them on holiday to the nearby mountain resort of MOKANSHAN

All Ears by Peter Szendy Pdf

The world of international politics has recently been rocked by a seemingly endless series of scandals involving auditory surveillance: the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping is merely the most sensational example of what appears to be a universal practice today. What is the source of this generalized principle of eavesdropping? All Ears: The Aesthetics of Espionage traces the long history of moles from the Bible, through Jeremy Bentham’s “panacoustic” project, all the way to the intelligence-gathering network called “Echelon.” Together with this archeology of auditory surveillance, Szendy offers an engaging account of spycraft’s representations in literature (Sophocles, Shakespeare, Joyce, Kafka, Borges), opera (Monteverdi, Mozart, Berg), and film (Lang, Hitchcock, Coppola, De Palma). Following in the footsteps of Orpheus, the book proposes a new concept of “overhearing” that connects the act of spying to an excessive intensification of listening. At the heart of listening Szendy locates the ear of the Other that manifests itself as the originary division of a “split-hearing” that turns the drive for mastery and surveillance into the death drive.

Where Was I?! by Terry Wogan Pdf

Unadulterated Wogan - the voice of sanity in a world gone gently mad. Until recently, eight million people improved their mornings by tuning into Terry's words of wisdom on Wake up to Wogan. But was their appetite sated by this daily exposure? Not in the slightest. So it's lucky that Terry has been known to turn his hand to the odd bit of writing. This has allowed him to shed light on such weighty matters as how to survive a wedding, what Bank Holidays are for, why Eurovision could be responsible for the Celtic Tiger, whether we should watch out for potatoes, and where exactly it all went pear-shaped... WHERE WAS I? gives his devoted followers exactly what they want - the unadulterated, inimitable Wogan viewpoint; a droll, forthright voice of sanity in a world gone gently mad (or is it them?). Like his broadcasting, his writing is an effortless flow of easy wit and sage opinion. WHERE WAS I? builds up a picture not only of Terry's world, but of Terry himself - a man who somehow manages to be off the wall and on the money all at the same time.
