The Big Game of Africa by Richard Tjader Pdf

Excerpt from The Big Game of Africa Good books on hunting trips and adventures in the Dark Continent are plentiful. My only apology for offering to the public The Big Game of Africa is my desire to comply with the wishes of many friends, who, having heard my lectures on Africa, have repeatedly asked me to issue something like them in book form. This volume is not only a narrative of my own wanderings and experiences in that continent, but is also intended to be a guide book to those many who arc interested in the life and habits of the African game animals as well as in the best way of stalking these with either camera or gun. For in the many good books on hunting in the Dark Continent, little or nothing has been said that may help the would-be African big game hunter in the selection of the proper outfit, guns, cameras, curing materials, etc., nor do they give him any definite information as to where, when and how to secure the game he wants, and none of them contains the most necessary introduction to the Ki-Swahili language, even a slight knowledge of which will prove of immense help to the sportsman when hunting in British East Africa, German East Africa and Uganda. This book is the result of my own experiences and observations during three different expeditions to British East Africa, and contains the most reliable information I was able to obtain from other sportsmen and professional hunters, as well as from the wild sons of that wonderful game country who, themselves, spend most of their lives roaming around among the Big Game of Africa. Excerpt from On Safari: Big Game Hunting in British East Africa, With Studies in Bird-Life Should the title of this work convey no significance, the fact would show that there yet remains Something new from Africa. That Arabic term Safari has no precise equivalent in our British tongue, yet is in daily use throughout British territories six times larger than the home islands. Hence I venture to introduce it to our common language. Its interpretation will presently become clear to those who read this book. The African Adventurers by Peter Hathaway Capstick Pdf

Hailed as the adventure-writing successor to Hemingway and Ruark, only Peter Hathaway Capstick “can write action as cleanly and suspensefully as the best of his predecessors’ (Sports Illustrated). This long-awaited sequel to Death in the Silent Places brings to life four turn-of-the-century adventurers and the savage frontiers they braved. * Frederick Selous, a British hunter, naturalist, and soldier, rewrote the history books with his fearless treks deep into Africa. * English game ranger Constantine “Iodine” Ionides saved Tanganyikan villages from man-eating lions and leopards. He also gained lasting fame for his uncanny ability to capture black mambas, cobras, Gaboon vipers, and other deadly snakes. * The dashing Brit Johnny Boyes who gained the chieftainship of the Kikuyu tribe with sheer bravado and survived the ferocious battles and ambushes of intertribal warfare. * And Scottish ex-boxer, Jim Sutherland, one of the best ivory hunters who ever lived. His tracking skills and stamina afoot became the stuff of African hunting legend. In The African Adventurers: A Return to the Silent Places, Capstick delivers “the kind of chilling stories that Hemingway only heard second-hand...with a flair and style that Papa himself would admire” (Guns and Ammo). The author’s pungent wit and his authenticity gained from years in the bush make this quartet of vintage heroics an unforgettable return to the silent places.

White Hunters by Brian Herne Pdf

East Africa affects our imagination like few other places: The sight of a charging rhino goes directly to the heart; the limitless landscape of bony highlands, desert, and mountain is, as Isak Dinesen wrote, of "unequalled nobility." Brian Herne's White Hunters is the story of seventy years of African adventure, danger, and romance. It re-creates the legendary big-game safaris led by Selous and Bell and the daring ventures of early hunters into unexplored territories, and brings to life such romantic figures as Cape-to-Cairo Grogan, who walked 4,000 miles for the love of a woman, and Dinesen's dashing lover, Denys Finch. Witnesses to the richest wildlife spectacle on the earth, these hunters were the first conservationists. Hard-drinking, infatuated with risk, and careless in love, they inspired Hemingway's stories and movies with Clark Gable and Gregory Peck.

Warrior by Peter Hathaway Capstick Pdf

Peter Hathaway Capstick died in 1996. At the time of his death, the world-renowned adventure writer was putting the finishing touches on this, a stirring and vivid biography of Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen, a man with whom he felt he had much in common. Edited and prepared for publication by his widow, Fiona Capstick, Warrior is Capstick’s riveting farewell to his fans and the final addition to the bestselling Peter Capstick Library. Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen was one of those rare men whom fate always seems to cast in the dramas that shape history. As a young officer, he served in India and Africa during the glory days of the British Empire, defending the crown’s dominions and exploring its darkest reaches. His exploits in the bloody colonial wars of turn-of-the-century East Africa earned him a reputation as one of the most fierce and ruthless soldiers in the Empire, yet it was during those years spent roaming the silent places of the Serengeti, hunting its game and learning its secrets, that Meinertzhagen developed a fascination with Africa that would last a lifetime. But there were other adventures to come, and Capstick narrates them all with his trademark skill and wit: daring commando raids against German forces in Africa and the Mideast during World War I, covert missions to the USSR and Nazi Germany between the wars, work as an OSS agent during World War II, and Meinertzhagen’s ceaseless support of Israeli nationhood are all woven together into an epic adventure. Warrior: The Legend of Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen is a powerful chronicle that follows the tracks of a twentieth-century icon.

Death in a Lonely Land by Peter Hathaway Capstick Pdf

From the author of Last Horizons, Peter Hathaway Capstick now presents Death in a Lonely Land, a second volume of his hunting, fishing, and shooting adventures on five continents—stories collected from such magazines as Outdoor Life, NRA’s American Hunter, Guns & Ammo, and Petersen’s Hunting. The stockbroker-turned-outdoorsman recalls his days as an African pro hunter in “The Killer Baboons of Vlackfontein.” “Four Fangs in a Treetop” records a foray into British Honduras for the jaguar, “a gold-dappled teardrop of motion.” Capstick narrowly escapes the Yellow Beard, Central America’s deadly tree-climbing snake, and cows “The Black Death” (Cape buffalo) in the kind of article that makes this author “the guru of American hunting fans” (New York Newsday). On Brazil’s forsaken Marajo Island, he bags the pugnacious red buffalo, which has the “temperament of a constipated Sumo wrestler and the tenacity of an IRS man.” The author discusses 12- and 20-gauge shotgun loads; recalls the pleasures of “biltong” (African beef jerky); describes the irresistible homemade lures of snook fishing expert John Gorbatch; and kills a genteel take of Atlantic salmon with the brilliantly simple tube fly. Featuring more than thirty gorgeous drawings by famous wildlife artist Dino Paravano, Death in a Lonely Landis another collector’s item by a writer who “keeps the tradition of great safari adventure alive in each of his books” (African Expedition Gazette).
