Covering every essential topic ranging from circulation and literacy instruction to reference and security, this benchmark text provides an up-to-date, broadly based view of library public service and its functions. Supplying essential, foundational reading for students of library public services as well as an up-to-date overview for practitioners who wish to refresh their knowledge or acquaint themselves with a new area of responsibility, this book's broad and solid coverage will benefit anyone concerned with developing or maintaining the public face of the library. A revision and expansion of Libraries Unlimited's Introduction to Library Public Services: Seventh Edition, this edition has new chapters covering such topics as e-resources, collections, print and other media, and facilities and funding. Additionally, every chapter has been substantially updated and reorganized to better reflect the role of technology in library services today. The book begins with background information on public services in libraries and an analysis of the library's public service philosophy. Then, the authors delve into staffing and assessment of services, moving logically to major functional areas of public services—reference, instruction, document delivery, circulation and reserves, collections, programming, safety and security issues, and facilities and funding. Real-life anecdotes from public, academic, and school libraries illustrate principles and concepts throughout the book. For each topic, the authors detail its role and philosophy, and offer key points to remember, references, and lists for further reading.

The History of the Beer and Brewing Industry by Ignazio Cabras,David Higgins Pdf

Beer is widely defined as the result of the brewing process which has been refined and improved over centuries. Beer is the drink of the masses – it is bought by consumers whose income, wealth, education, and ethnic background vary substantially, something which can be seen by taking a look at the range of customers in any pub, inn, or bar. But why has beer became so pervasive? What are the historical factors which make beer and the brewing industry so prominent? How has the brewing industry developed to become one of the most powerful global generators of output and revenue? This book answers these and other related questions by exploring the history of the beer and brewing industry at a global level. Contributors investigate a number of aspects, such as the role of geographical origin in branding; mergers, acquisitions, and corporate governance (UK, European and US perspectives); national and international political economy; taxation and regulation (including historical and contemporary practice); national and international trade flows and distribution networks; and historical trends in the commercialisation of beer. The chapters in this book were originally published as online articles in Business History.

The Adventures of Super3 by Annette C.H. Nelson,Danielle N. DuPuis Pdf

This book offers the most dynamic, simplest way to teach students the concept of the Super3, enabling them to effortlessly remember and apply it to their educational or everyday life. Information literacy and effective problem solving are increasingly important skills for students to have. The Super3 strategy of "plan, do, and review," created by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz, brought information literacy to young children and made an abstract concept easy to understand and apply. Now this book can revolutionize the way teachers teach the concept of the Super3 for outstanding results in both the classroom and school library environment. The Adventures of Super3: A Teacher's Guide to Information Literacy for Grades K-2 contains a collection of dynamic lesson plans that library media specialists or classroom instructors can use to teach problem-solving strategies to children in kindergarten through second grade. Problems range from finding the meaning of a word to picking the right pet for a family. Each lesson contains performance objectives, lesson time-frame, engagement, activities, closure, assessment, and suggested children's literature. Also included are printable materials for each lesson and a DVD with two entertaining animated shorts.

Energy Prices, Fuel Poverty and Ofgem by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Business and Enterprise Committee Pdf

This report, from the Business and Enterprise Committee (HCP 293-I, ISBN 9780215523273) inquires into the effect of the big 6 energy companies (Npower, Centrica, EDF Energy , Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy) all raising their prices between January and April 2008. The report aims to feed into a separate inquiry being carried out by Ofgem. The ideal objective is maintain a policy of low energy prices for both domestic and commercial users, but the Committee believes that the UK's energy market is not functioning as efficiently as they should and that UK prices may be higher than other countries. The Committee also states that Ofgem's inquiry will not examine the competitiveness of the wholesale gas market. The price of gas determines the wholesale price of electricity, with gas-fired power accounting for around a third of the UK's generating capacity. High fuel prices will inevitably lead to fuel poverty and the Committee also believes that a root and branch review of government policy in this area is needed. In total, the Committee sets out 43 conclusions and recommendations, covering some of the following areas, including: Ofgem's inquiry; the UK gas market; increasing gas dependency; wholesale gas market concentration; oil-gas price link; gas contracting; the wholesale gas market and Ofgem; wholesale electricity: rising environmental costs; wholesale electricity market concentration; new generating capacity; vertical integration; wholesale electricity market liquidity; changes in supplier costs; smart metering; social tariffs and improving housing.
