This biographical dictionary documents the Union army colonels who commanded regiments from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Entries are arranged first by state and then by regiment, and provide a biographical sketch of each colonel focusing on his Civil War service. Many of the colonels covered herein never rose above that rank, failing to win promotion to brigadier general or brevet brigadier general, and have therefore received very little scholarly attention prior to this work.
Early pioneers established Huntington in the 1830s at the site where Miami Indians and French trappers exchanged goods. Because of its location near the Historic Forks of the Wabash, Huntington served as an important transportation hub in the Old Northwest. The Wabash & Erie Canal introduced a wide variety of craftsmen and their families to the area until railroads eventually made canal travel obsolete. After the canal boom and bust, railroads and farming dominated Huntington’s economy, but textiles, light manufacturing, and limestone quarries populated the landscape; limestone from Indiana was used to build the Washington Monument in Washington, DC. Some residents went on to achieve national fame, including Congressman Ed Roush, the architect of the 911 emergency response system, and Vice Pres. Dan Quayle. The town is also home to Huntington University, a perennial selection as one of the Midwest’s best private colleges.

One of the small group of tribes comprising the Illinois division of the Algonquian linguistic family, the Miamis emerged as a pivotal tribe only during the French and British imperial wars, the Miami Confederacy wars of the eighteenth century, and the treaty-making period of the nineteenth century. The Miamis reached their peak of political importance in the Indian confederacies which blocked the Northwest Territory in the 1790's and during the War of 1812. Their title to much of the present state of Indiana enabled them to make advantageous treaties and delay emigration until the late 1840's. The tribe's 1846-47 emigrations produced two branches, the Indiana group and the Kansas-Oklahoma group, which have maintained political co-operation in spite of deep-seated cultural antipathies and dispossession. Their solidarity has been rewarded by success in their suits before the United States Court of Claims. This account spans the years from 1658 to the present, emphasizing the occasions on which the Miamis were a decisive influence on the course of American history.
