Biographical Sketches from the Paraguayan War - 1864-1870 by John H. Tuohy Pdf

The Paraguayan War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance, raged for over five years; pitting Paraguay against the alliance of the Republics of Argentina and Uruguay and the Empire of Brazil. Between its loss of territory and the deaths of sixty percent of its population, the war left Paraguay devastated for generations. The Allies emerged from their victory exhausted and with societies profoundly changed by the experience of the war. This book provides brief biographies of significant players in the tragedy that was the Paraguayan War. As in any epic, the War's dramatis personæ include heroes and villains, the colorful and the subdued. Many of those who survived the conflict went on to important post-war careers. Many of those who did not survive are still remembered by their countrymen for their courage and devotion.

I Die with My Country by Hendrik Kraay,Thomas Whigham Pdf

The Paraguayan War (1864–70) was the most extensive and profound interstate war ever fought in South America. It directly involved the four countries of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay and took the lives of hundreds of thousands, combatants and noncombatants alike. While the war still stirs emotions on the southern continent, until today few scholars from outside the region have taken on the daunting task of analyzing the conflict. In this compilation of ten essays, historians from Canada, the United States, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay address its many tragic complexities. Each scholar examines a particular facet of the war, including military mobilization, home-front activities, the war’s effects on political culture, war photography, draft resistance, race issues, state formation, and the role of women in the war. The editors’ introduction provides a balance to the many perspectives collected here while simultaneously integrating them into a comprehensible whole, thus making the book a compelling read for social historians and military buffs alike.

Frontiers of Fire : A Military Historical Novel (The Paraguayan War Series Book 1) by Borba de Souza Pdf

In the tradition of the hectic heroes from Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe and The Last Kingdom, comes Frontiers of Fire. A historical novel bursting with valor and vengeance in the heart of the South-American marshes. Inspired by true events. Luis Caetano thought it was his last week as a lieutenant at the remote Fort of Coimbra. He believed that after the New Year of 1865, he would return home to reunite with his father and little sister on the idyllic 3-Estados farm. But the Paraguayan fleet appeared on the horizon, and the lieutenant saw he was wrong. Terribly wrong. Now, instead of waltzes and violins, he must dance at the sound of cannons, the taste of agony, and the sight of splitting bones. Luis and his daring native soldiers will form a desperate resistance to delay the massive enemy. To buy time to evacuate civilians, they will put their lives at stake. One last stand encircled in the middle of nowhere, with no hopes of aid or extra ammo. Nearby, a man watches the deadly struggle of the 155 besieged Brazilians against a crushing force of 3500 invaders. He is the smuggler Gaspar from Corrientes. A citizen from a neutral state, his only worry is how the conflict may trouble his business. This war is not his war—or at least he thought so. But fate and the call of duty will bring them together, in an unlikely alliance, to survive against a cold-blooded, vast, and merciless enemy. The odds are heavily stacked against them, and the obstacles are beyond their imagination.

The War in Paraguay by George Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from The War in Paraguay: With a Historical Sketch of the Country and Its People and Notes Upon the Military Engineering of the War The contradictory views of the conduct and character of President Lopez, taken by those who have felt an interest in the struggle between the Paraguayans and the Allied Powers opposed to them, have led me to think that a short work, written by one who has resided eleven years in Paraguay, might not be unacceptable. Having been engaged in the defence of the country, I am enabled to give authentic information on the subject. As will be seen from the following narrative, I consider Lopez to be a monster without a parallel, but I did not discover his character before the latter end of 1868. All his outrages at the commencement of the war I only heard by vague rumours. His manner, however, was such as entirely to dispel and throw discredit on any whispers which might be uttered against him. Latterly, however, I have received overwhelming corroborations of what I have stated against him in the early part of the book. The mode in which President Lopez began the war on the Argentines was outrageous, but with Brazil war was apparently unavoidable; and had he not commenced the war when he did, Brazil would have taken Paraguay at a disadvantage. My personal motives for taking a part in the war were not, however, so much political as physical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Press, Power, and Culture in Imperial Brazil by Hendrik Kraay,Celso Thomas Castilho,Teresa Cribelli Pdf

Press, Power, and Culture in Imperial Brazil introduces recent Brazilian scholarship to English-language readers, providing fresh perspectives on newspaper and periodical culture in the Brazilian empire from 1822 to 1889. Through a multifaceted exploration of the periodical press, contributors to this volume offer new insights into the workings of Brazilian power, culture, and public life. Collectively arguing that newspapers are contested projects rather than stable recordings of daily life, individual chapters demonstrate how the periodical press played a prominent role in creating and contesting hierarchies of race, gender, class, and culture. Contributors challenge traditional views of newspapers and magazines as mechanisms of state- and nation-building. Rather, the scholars in this volume view them as integral to current debates over the nature of Brazil. Including perspectives from Brazil's leading scholars of the periodical press, this volume will be the starting point for future scholarship on print culture for years to come.
