Biotechnology in Surgery by Alfonso Barbarisi,Paolo Bechi,Paolo Innocenti,Carlo A. Redi,Francesco Rosso Pdf

The 20th century has finished, the century when surgery took huge steps forward thanks to progress in technology. Now we have entered the "century of biotechnologies", which will not only generate progress in surgery, but also lead to a real "cultural revolution" that will completely change approaches to solving different problems in medicine. The aim of this book is to bring surgeons closer to biotechnologies and to overcome the cultural gap dividing them from these new approaches. Biotechnologies are already proposed and used at different levels in surgical practice: in diagnostic technique, enabling practitioners to identify diseases at an early stage and follow their molecular modification over time; and in tissue engineering, where the use of "smart scaffolds" offers a possible answer to increasing demand for biocompatible tissues and organs in transplantation surgery. This volume focuses on the emerging field of stem cells, analyzing both their role as possible players in originating and perpetuating cancer – "cancer stem cells" – and, conversely, their extraordinary therapeutical potential. An additional section is dedicated to the evaluation and application of derived molecular factors that can enhance the physiological processes that are fundamentally important in surgery, such as hemostasis and wound healing. Surgeons have always been technologists, in the sense that since surgery began they have always needed technology, beginning with a scalpel and surgical instruments. They have always cooperated with technologists. However, in the new century, the first one of the millennium, a rapid increase in knowledge that is outside the realm of the surgeon’s traditional technological training is imposing itself – hence the aim of this book. It is now urgent to encourage surgeons to embrace this knowledge (biotechnology) with confidence. By its very nature, biotechnology is completely different from the technologies used so far, because it escapes the senses of sight and touch, which up to now have been the essence of the surgeon’s work. The cellular and molecular dimensions of biotechnologies are still far removed from most of the recent advances in modern surgical techniques. A common language between surgeons and biotechnologists will create further, revolutionary, progress in surgical sciences in the twenty-first century.

This book discusses the current research concepts and the emerging technologies in the field of stem cells and tissue engineering. It is the first authoritative reference documenting all the ways that plastic surgical practice and regenerative medicine science overlap or provide a road map for the future of both specialties. The Editors have provided a valuable service by gathering in one place the leading voices in these two fields in clear and concise manner. Divided into five parts, the book opens with a description of the elements of regenerative medicine including definitions, basic principles of soft and bone tissue regeneration, biomaterials and scaffolds. Current research concepts are explored in the second part of this book, for example mechanotransduction and the utility of extracellular vesicles. In the third part, the editors present the emerging technologies and highlight the novel perspectives on bionic reconstruction and biomimetics in surgery and regenerative medicine. Part four deals with translational aspects including practical information on moving scientific findings from bench to bedside. The final part then describes in detail applications in clinical plastic surgery. Written by leading experts this book is an invaluable resource for researchers, students, beginners and experienced clinicians in a range of specialties. The Globesity Challenge to General Surgery by Mirto Foletto,Raul J. Rosenthal Pdf

The increasing prevalence of morbid obesity has led the World Health Organization to coin the descriptive term “globesity” to reflect the worldwide nature of the problem. Providing health care to these patients, especially when surgery is required, can be extremely challenging owing to the specific needs in respect of logistics, facilities, and professional expertise. Appropriate care has to date often been unachievable and unaffordable outside of established bariatric centers, but such centers themselves usually have insufficient capacity and resources to cope with the demand among the general population. This book therefore provides a wealth of guidance and helpful tips and tricks on how to deal with obese patients within a general surgery setting. Importantly, it highlights the need for global rethinking on public health as regards resource allocation and patterns and standards of care, with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes through greater affordability.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery by Stephen N. Snow,George R. Mikhail Pdf

Mohs Micrographic Surgery, an advanced treatment procedure for skin cancer, offers the highest potential for recovery--even if the skin cancer has been previously treated. This procedure is a state-of-the-art treatment in which the physician serves as surgeon, pathologist, and reconstructive surgeon. It relies on the accuracy of a microscope to trace and ensure removal of skin cancer down to its roots. This procedure allows dermatologists trained in Mohs Surgery to see beyond the visible disease and to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor, leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This procedure is most often used in treating two of the most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The cure rate for Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the highest of all treatments for skin cancer--up to 99 percent even if other forms of treatment have failed. This procedure, the most exact and precise method of tumor removal, minimizes the chance of regrowth and lessens the potential for scarring or disfigurement

Robotic Surgery by Farid Gharagozloo,Vipul R. Patel,Pier Cristoforo Giulianotti,Robert Poston,Rainer Gruessner,Mark Meyer Pdf

The first edition of Robotic Surgery was written only a decade after the introduction of robotic technology. It was the first comprehensive robotic surgery reference and represented the early pioneering look ahead to the future of surgery. Building upon its success, this successor edition serves as a complete multi-specialty sourcebook for robotic surgery. It seeks to explore an in-depth look into surgical robotics and remote technologies leading to the goal of achieving the benefits of traditional surgery with the least disruption to the normal functions of the human body. Written by experts in the field, chapters cover the fundamental principles of robotic surgery and provide clear instruction on their clinical application and long term results. Most notably, one chapter on “The Blueprint for the Establishment of a Successful Robotic Surgery Program: Lessons from Admiral Hymen R. Rickover and the Nuclear Navy” outlines the many valuable lessons from the transformative change which was brought about by the introduction of nuclear technology into the conventional navy with Safety as the singular goal of the change process. Robotics represents a monumental triumph of surgical technology. Undoubtedly, the safety of the patient will be the ultimate determinant of its success. The second edition of Robotic Surgery aims to erase the artificial boundaries of specialization based on regional anatomy and serves as a comprehensive multispecialty reference for all robot surgeons. It allows them to contemplate crossing boundaries which are historically defined by traditional open surgery.

The Biotech Business Handbook by Michael G. Pappas Pdf

One comment often repeated to me by coworkers in the biotechnology industry deals with their frustration at not understanding how their particular roles fit into their company's overall scheme for developing, manufacturing, and marketing biomedical products. Although these workers know their fields of specialty and responsibilities very well, whether it be in product research and development, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, packaging, quality control, or marketing and sales, they for the most part lack an understanding of precisely how their own contributory pieces fit into the overall scheme of the corporate biotechnology puzzle. The Biotech Business Handbook was written to assist the biotechnologist-whether a tech nician, senior scientist, manager, marketing representative, or college student interested in entering the field-in building a practical knowledge base of the rapidly expanding and maturing biotechnology segment of the healthcare industry. Because biotechnology in the United States and abroad covers many disciplines, much of the information presented in this book deals with the biomedical diagnostic aspects of the industry. Business subjects for the most part unfamiliar to technically oriented people, such as the types of biotechnology corpo rations, their business and corporate structures, their financing, patent, and trademark mat ters, their special legal issues, and the contributions of their consultants are treated in a manner designed to make them clear and understandable.
