Bitter Lemons by Lawrence Durrell Pdf

In Bitter Lemons, Durrell tells the perceptive, often humorous, story of his experiences on Cyprus between 1953 and 1956-first as a visitor, then as a householder and teacher, and finally as Press Advisor to a government coping with armed rebellion. Here are unforgettable pictures of the sunlit villages and people, the ancient buildings, mountains and sea-and the somber political tragedy that finally engulfed the island.

Mixing Memory and Desire by Fred D. Crawford Pdf

The first comprehensive treatment of how "an American poet so profoundly shaped or affected the modern British novel," this--in the words of James E. Miller, Jr.--details "an extraordinary and even exciting literary fact, worthy of full documentation and exploration. "The book begins with an introduction describing how The Waste Land blew into England in 1922, as William Empson said, "not unlike an east wind." Although the critics disagree over what the poem means, all writers since 1922 have felt its influence in some degree, even if only in rejecting it. The author then traces echoes of The Waste Land in 17 major British novelists, confining himself to cases where the evidence is too strong to be explained as coincidence. The authors are divided into three groups. Part I assesses the poem's early impact, as seen in the work of writers already established at the time of its publication. Novelists discussed in this section include E. M. Forster, D. H. Lawrence, and Aldous Huxley. There is also a chapter on Richard Aldinton that contains a fascinating revaluation, based on extensive research, of Aldington's personal quarrel with Eliot. Part II examines the different sort of influence The Waste Land exerted on novelists who came to prominence in the decade before World War II. For these writers--among them Evelyn Waugh, George Orwell, Christopher Isherwood, C. S. Lewis, and Graham Greene--the poem was a basic part of their literary education, and was therefore woven more deeply, and frequently, into the fabric of their work. Part III focuses on two writers of the postwar era, Iris Murdoch and Anthony Burgess. With the rest of their generation they had been forced to recognize a horror more oppressive than the banality and blight of Eliot's "Unreal City," yet they found in the The Waste Land images and meanings so compelling that the poem retains an undeniable presence in their work. In his conclusion, Dr. Crawford attributes The Waste Land's uniquely powerful impact to four qualities: its timing in providing "prototypes for almost every modern problem"; its challenging elusiveness; its ambiguity, which "allows every reader to draw his own conclusion regarding the poem's meaning"; and its haunting symbols and descriptions. The "rhetoric of fiction" is especially sensitive to such qualities. The result is the British novelists "have helped to 'define' The Waste Land by their varied use of it."

Travelling Artists in Cyprus, 1700-1956 by Rita C. Severis Pdf

This fascinating survey of Cyprus during the eighteenth, nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries offers a unique view of a country as seen through the eyes of artists and travellers. It is based on over 350 works which are for the first time presented, pertaining to two periods of the history of Cyprus, those of Ottoman and British rule. A panorama of topography, monuments and ethnography is unfolded through the paintings and drawings of both amateur and professional artists. The political background and nationality of the artists and the influences of Imperialism, Orientalism and Colonialism are explored, and the book considers how attitudes changed during the period under discussion. The book also looks at the perception of the island, once a French, Ottoman and British colony, in relation to those of neighbouring countries such as Greece and Malta.

Sicilian Carousel by Lawrence Durrell Pdf

Lose yourself in this vivid travelogue evoking the historic Mediterranean island of Sicily by the king of travel writing and real-life family member of The Durrells in Corfu. 'A magician.' The Times Despite decades spent poetically chronicling Mediterranean life in Rhodes, Cyprus and Corfu, celebrated travel writer Lawrence Durrell had never set foot on the largest island: Sicily. For years, his friend Martine begged him to visit her on this sun-kissed paradise, but it took her sudden death to finally bring him to its shores - and he is not disappointed. Joining an eccentric tour group, Durrell immerses himself in the island's spectacular archaeological remains, and becomes dizzy with Sicily's rich history: its mysterious myths and meanings. Featuring unpublished poems and illustrated with elegant engravings. Sicilian Carousel is a gem that ranks with Durrell's finest work. 'Readers who have been to Sicily will love this book. Readers who have not been to Sicily will love this book.' Paul Fussell 'Like long letters from a civilized and very funny friend - the prose as luminous as the Mediterranean air he loves.' Time

Sweet and Bitter Island by Tabitha Morgan Pdf

On a sweltering day in July, 1878 the men of the 42nd Royal Highlanders - the Black Watch - waded ashore at Larnaca Bay to begin the British occupation of Cyprus. Today, Britons on sunbeds colonise the same stretch of sand, the latest visitors to an island which has long held a special place in the English imagination - and a controversial role in British imperial ambitions. Drawing on largely unpublished material, Tabitha Morgan reflects on why successive administrations failed, so catastrophically, to engage with their Cypriot subjects, and how social segregation, confusion about Cypriot identity and the poor calibre of so many administrators all contributed to the bloody conflict that led, finally, to Cypriot independence in 1960. Sweet and Bitter Island explores for the first time the unique bond between Britain and Cyprus and the complex, sometimes tense, relationship between the two nations which endures to the present day. Extensively researched and lyrically written, this is the definitive portrait of British colonial life on the Mediterranean island.

Stiff Upper Lip by Lawrence Durrell Pdf

Imagine if P.G.Wodehouse was a diplomat: Durrell's hilarious foreign office sketches are 'sophisticated funny, but wonderful, and bonkers' ( Joanna Trollope) 'A rewarding cocktail based on two parts Wodehouse and one part Saki ... So much fun.' New York Times 'Whatever wars there may be and whatever crises, there will still, please heaven, be the diplomatic corps, with its protocol and formalities and a field for humour which I have never seen better used than in these stories.' John Betjeman After a lifetime serving that most delightfully British of institutions, the Foreign Office, Antrobus can't resist musing over old times in Vulgaria at his London club - or should that be cringing ... His memories of farcical gaffes and comic diplomatic misadventures star a mad inventor, a tragic cavalry officer, foreign ambassadors, embassy bachelors, a mischievous chef plotting to bring down the empire with garlic ... Celebrated British novelist, travel writer, and member of the real-life family portrayed in The Durrells in Corfu , Lawrence Durrell experienced the absurdities of mid-century diplomacy firsthand. Lampooning English etiquette, empire, and eccentricity, his charming jeu d'esprit about the diplomatic corps is classic satire: but be warned: there's a point where laughter can become painful ... 'Antrobus is a delight to listen to, and his stories are wonderfully funny.' Atlantic 'My goodness it is funny.' The Daily Telegraph

Prospero's Cell by Lawrence Durrell Pdf

Lose yourself in this glorious memoir of the island jewel of Corfu by the king of travel writing and real-life family member of The Durrells in Corfu. 'In its gem-like miniature quality, among the best books ever written.' New York Times In his youth, before he became a celebrated writer and poet, Lawrence Durrell spent four transformative years on the island jewel of Corfu, fascinated by the idyllic natural beauty and blood-stained ancient history within its rocky shores. While his brother Gerald collected animals as a budding naturalist - later fictionalised in My Family and Other Animals and filmed as The Durrells in Corfu - Lawrence fished, drank and befriended the local villagers. After World War II catapulted him back into a turmoiled world, Durrell never forgot the wonders of Corfu. Elif Shafak 'Corfu could not have found a fitter chronicler.' Daily Telegraph 'A charming idyll ... Delightful.' Sunday Times

Reflections on a Marine Venus by Lawrence Durrell Pdf

World War II is finally over, and after four tortuous years serving the Crown in Egypt, Lawerence Durrell seeks peace in the landscapes he has loved since growing up in Corfu: ancient Mediterranean islands. He is posted to Rhodes, and from his first dip in the dazzling blue Aegean - which jolts his soul awake for the first time in years - he immerses himself in the rhythms and moods of local life, befriending eccentric villagers and quaffing ouzo as through the war was a distant dream. With his poet's eye and passion for excavating local history, Durrell recaptures the mythic Rhodes of legend, of knights and crusades, that lies beneath its war-ravaged surface. Rich in character, wit, and insight, it is a Mediterranean journey that will stay with you forever.
