The Least Developed Countries Report 2023 by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Pdf

In 2023, the combined GDP of the LDCs was 10 per cent below the level it would have reached had the pre-pandemic (2010-2019) growth trend been sustained. As a result, at least an additional 15 million people in LDCs are now living in extreme poverty, with their governments severely constrained in their ability to sustain adequate investments in public services or invest in advancing development progress. The Report highlights the urgent need for concerted action to restore fiscal space in LDCs through the lasting resolution of the debt crisis, reform of the international financial architecture, and the mobilization of climate finance to enable needed investments towards low-carbon transition and green structural transformation. Without which, the SDGs and sustainable development cannot be realised. The Report advances several recommendations aimed at advancing the reform of global development finance, which in its current state, is deficient in terms of its quantity, quality, structure, cost and ease of accessibility. The Report also contains a detailed analysis of the possible role of central banks in shaping the financing of sustainable development and green structural transformation in LDCs. While the contribution of central banks to dealing with climate change has been discussed in developed countries, this is the first time this type of analysis is done in the context of the LDCs.

Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2021 by United Nations Publications Pdf

Asia-Pacific's recovery from its weakest economic performance in recent history remains fragile and can be "K-shaped" due to the likely unevenness of the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out, policy space and structural weaknesses across the region. Asia-Pacific is no stranger to crises that leave behind a severe social and economic impact. But a better understanding of the complex risk landscape and a comprehensive approach to building resilience have become imperative in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. Building resilience into policy frameworks and institutions requires aligning fiscal and monetary policies and structural reforms with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2021 proposes an illustrative 'build forward better' policy package for resilient post-COVID-19 economies that aims to ensure universal access to healthcare and social protection, close the digital divide, and strengthen climate and clean energy actions. Estimated to reduce the number of poor in the region by almost 180 million people and cut carbon emissions by about 30 percent in the long run, these policy actions need not necessarily add much fiscal burden for most except some less developed Asia-Pacific countries. It also examines policy options to meet immediate and medium-term financing needs for building resilience including debt service suspensions, debt swaps for development, sovereign bond financing, public debt management, emergency financing mechanisms, and sustainable investing by public institutional investors.

Financing for Sustainable Development Report 2021 by United Nations Pdf

This report assesses progress in implementing the commitments and actions in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. The global economic recession and financial turmoil from COVID-19 (coronavirus) are derailing implementation of the Agenda and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Even before the pandemic, the 2020 Financing for Sustainable Development Report (FSDR) of the Inter-agency Task Force noted that there was backsliding in many areas. Due to the crisis, global financial markets have witnessed heavy losses and intense volatility. Particularly worrisome is the prospect of a new debt crisis. The FSDR highlights both immediate and longer-term actions, including arresting the backslide, to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Recommendations are included in the report.
