Blessed are These Hands by Susan Kullman,Marvelle Thompson Pdf

This book is to honor women in a creative way. Women were asked to have their hands photographed holding something they consider sacred, holy, an outward representation of their deepest self. Their hands became mini-altars, capturing values and practices that center on nature, art, work, hobbies and family bonds as well as spirituality. The statements they wrote to accompany their photograph personalize and enhance the portraits.

2021 Catholic Media Association Award second place award in liturgy 2021 Catholic Media Association Award honorable mention award in gender issues - inclusion in the church For years, religious leaders and communities around the world have turned to the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics, and Ritual (WATER) for feminist liturgies for justice. Now—in celebration of the organization’s thirty-fifth anniversary—Stirring Waters gathers fifty-two of these beautiful liturgies, ready-made to help your community venerate powerful women of faith, develop a richer and deeper spirituality, and take real action for justice. Use the liturgies in this book as a resource to nourish the souls and focus the passions of the people you serve. Help them reflect on great women like the prophetess Miriam and Julian of Norwich; provoke and disturb them on occasions like Earth Day and World Water Day; energize them on International Women’s Day and Black History Month; and rejuvenate drooping spirits with liturgies of healing and gratitude. Never again will you scramble or struggle to provide community prayer that is worthwhile, nourishing, and even electrifying.

All You That Labor by C. Melissa Snarr Pdf

OC Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.OCOMathew 11:28 (AKJV). In the early 1990s, a grassroots coalition of churches in Baltimore, Maryland helped launch what would become a national movement. Joining forces with labor and low-wage worker organizations, they passed the first municipal living wage ordinance. Since then, over 144 municipalities and counties as well as numerous universities and local businesses in the United States have enacted such ordinances. Although religious persons and organizations have been important both in the origins of the living wage movement and in its continuing success, they are often ignored or under analyzed. Drawing on participant observation in multiple cities, All You That Labor analyzes and evaluates the contributions of religious activists to the movement. The book explores the ways religious organizations do this work in concert with low-wage workers, the challenges religious activists face, and how people of faith might better nurture moral agency in relation to the political economy. Ultimately, C. Melissa Snarr provides clarity on how to continue to cultivate, renew, and expand religious resources dedicated to the moral agency of low-wage workers and their allies.

The running commentary by Rabbis Oren Hayon, Seth Limmer, and Amy Scheinerman draws out the historic background of the seder rituals, builds on the social justice issues of our day, and offers contemporary connections to Passover. The text is complemented by full-color works from acclaimed artist Tobi Kahn that will enhance any seder experience. Equally suited to home and community celebrations, this is a Haggadah for today and tomorrow. Mishkan HaSeder has the depth to stimulate experienced seder leaders while its accessible explanations will make those joining our tables for the first time feel welcome. "In this brilliant new Reform Haggadah, the old is made new in a spiritual depth that is dazzling. The felicitous translation of traditional and modern sources, the insightful commentary and questions, the moving poetry, the aesthetically evocative depth of the art, and the beautiful and accessible layout of the text all combine to make this Haggadah a genuine treasure that will enrich Passover and the experience of the seder for this generation of religious seekers. We are all indebted to the CCAR for making this publication possible." -Rabbi David Ellenson, Chancellor Emeritus, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion "Finally, a Haggadah that is gorgeous, creative, serious, egalitarian, poetic, and inspiring! With so many layers of meaning and beauty, this new liturgy for the seder will nourish the skeptics, the seekers, and the scholars in your midst. This is the Haggadah my family and yours have been waiting for." -Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President, Union for Reform Judaism "Mishkan HaSeder is a gorgeous new Haggadah, with powerful feminist commentary that illuminates the moral and ethical underpinnings of the Passover seder and opens new doors of understanding, as well as inspiring poetry that deepens the experience. This is the new gold standard for every seder table." -Sheila Katz, CEO, National Council of Jewish Women "From poetry that lifts the heart to colorful artwork that deepens our vision, from the Talmud's wisdom to the insights of contemporary Jewish teachers, from ancient practice to the urgent call for justice in our own day, Mishkan HaSeder will enrich the Passover seder for experienced participants and newcomers alike. Like the seder itself, this new Haggadah is a gathering, a blessing, a feast." -Rabbi David Stern, Senior Rabbi, Temple Emanu-El Dallas and Past President, Central Conference of American Rabbis "This is the Haggadah you have to own. An amazing weaving together of the service we all know, in Hebrew and English, with astounding works of art--poems from many different sources, exceptional page design, and beautiful, meditative color images by the brilliant Tobi Kahn--and with thoughtful commentary that explicates the tradition and orients us to the work yet to be done. There are many Haggadot with various themes, but this is one for the ages, allowing each user to pull out favorite poems, highlight specific directives, open up thoughtful seder table discussions, and become truly immersed in the holiday." -Ruth Messinger, Global Ambassador and Past President, American Jewish World Service

Beyond the Garden by James B. Clay Pdf

Shakespeare said, All the worlds a stage; all the men and women merely players. We all have different scripts; but we all search for the same thing. From Macbeth, we get an answer for what it is we search, and nothing is but what is not. My book, Beyond the Garden, takes a look at conventional, fundamental religious thought which is prevalent today, and especially in thoughts such as the gay issue. I suggest that there is another view of life which includes all men and women as brothers and sisters and their sexual preferences. Just as Martin Luther King and the eightys ladies sought to bring freedom to the oppressed, so should the knights of today seek to bring freedom to all mankind. The new frontier becomes an inescapable acceptance of all humanity because that is the issue of unreality prevalent today. Each of us needs to learn that the one thing needful in this world of woe is understanding, acceptance and lasting relationships. This book offers a suggestion for those who want to find true freedom and oneness with his brothers and sisters and God. While some of the more conventional religious books have mainstream thought, Beyond the Garden differs in that it acknowledges other thought patterns to show the offal of our existence until we understand who we are. By coming to this understanding, we discover true freedom. The story of the biblical Cain represents the story of Israel; more than that, it is the story of everyone in his God given freedom outside the garden without compassion. The mark of Cain becomes the standard by which one lives in his freedom. For me, the mark represents an attempt to find true freedom which falls short of our goal as humans, or as Erich Fromm would say, Escape from Freedom. To get beyond the garden is mans lot in life. A more profound inspiration seems to compel us back to the garden where we will find our hearts desire. Herein the quest begins. In other words, we search for the truth beyond what is not!

Guide My Feet by Marian Wright Edelman Pdf

The founder of the Children's Defense Fund and author of The Measure of Our Success presents prayers and meditations to inspire all those, such as parents, teachers, and ministers, who work on the behalf of children. Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, is one of the most important moral leaders in America. Her first book, The Measure of Our Success was a #1 New York Times bestseller—spending 16 weeks on the list, selling more than 450,000 copies and garnering spectacular praise from Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, and Oprah Winfrey. Guide My Feet continues her crusade for the well-being of America's children by providing a counterweight to the lesson society is teaching this generation of children—to be soulless takers instead of empowered givers. Guide My Feet is a collection of prayers and meditations gathered from Edelman's own holiday rituals and experiences and the writings of such inspiring leaders as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, and Frederick Douglass. It urges readers to commit to and pray for strength and patience, and offers solace and direction for parents troubled by the commercialism and violence running rampant in today's society. Filled with wisdom, compassion and understanding, it provides an important spiritual and moral resource all caregivers can turn to as they strive to instill values, integrity, self-discipline and faith in children.

Mutuality in El Barrio by Carey Kasten,Brenna Moore Pdf

The stories of 18 immigrant families from East Harlem and their experiences with one of New York’s deeply-rooted organizations On any given weekday, people stream in and out of Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service’s bright, airy building on 115th Street. They are mostly mothers who find their way to LSA, sometimes only weeks after crossing the border from Mexico, having heard of the support that las hermanitas (“the little sisters”) offer. Opening a window into the world of New York’s Spanish-speaking newcomers, Mutuality in El Barrio combines oral histories with archival research of the history, spirituality, and ministry of LSA to present how this well-established organization serves vulnerable populations with a unique approach they call “mutuality.” LSA is part of a network of East Harlem’s powerful grassroots organizations that draws from the remarkable strengths of local families in its community. It is a place of healing and empowerment focused on the overall holistic health of resident families. Long-term relationships are cultivated here rather than quick fixes, and it is a place that nurtures people’s full potential as leaders, parents, and advocates for themselves. In Mutuality in El Barrio, eighteen mothers share how, through the help of LSA, they managed to navigate a strange city and an unfamiliar language in a neighborhood that has long been a site of incredible challenges and extraordinary strength, creativity, and cultural vitality. These personal accounts of mothers, long-time LSA staff, and nuns reveal how these women found solidarity, accompaniment, care, neighborhood transformation, and binding connections through mutuality that helped them grow and connect in East Harlem. Their stories shine a light on an organization that began as a small community of vowed nuns who, like these mothers, also trace their origins abroad.

An invitation to find beauty and meaning in the ordinary and imperfect aspects of your life; not as a call to settle for less, but rather as a way to mysteriously participate in God's power and purpose. Glenn Packiam wants to empower readers to find great joy, purpose, and passion in their daily living. While bread may be one of the most common items on our dinner tables, Jesus chose to take it at the Last Supper and invest deep, wonderful, and transcendent meaning in it. The ordinary is not the enemy; it is the means by which God accomplishes the miraculous. Through clear biblical teaching and practical steps, Packiam leads the reader into a more purposeful, directed, hopeful future.
