Blueprints for Battle by Jan Hoffenaar,Dieter Krüger,David T. Zabecki Pdf

While scholarship abounds on the diplomatic and security aspects of the Cold War, very little attention has been paid to military planning at the operational level. In Blueprints for Battle, experts from Russia, the United States, and Europe address this dearth by closely examining the military planning of NATO and Warsaw Pact member nations from the end of World War II to the beginning of détente. Informed by material from recently opened archives, this collection investigates the perceptions and actions of the rival coalitions, exploring the challenges presented by nuclear technology, examining how military commanders' perceptions changed from the 1950s to the 1960s, and discussing logistical coordination among allied states. The result is a detailed study that offers much-needed new perspectives on the military aspects of the early Cold War.

The Battle of Home by Anthoy Cekota Pdf

"Is not home,” asks Mr.Cekota, “the expression of those most precious things which, up to now, we have tried unsuccessfully to establish in international and social relations--security and freedom?... Of the many aims and ends emerging out of this war, this struggle for home seems to me a war aim as important and as a good as any other.” Mr.Cekota came to Canada in the summer of 1939, one of the group eighty Czechoslovaks who escaped from their native city of Zlin before it was too late. Cut off from their homeland, having some machines and considerable industrial skill, these former employees of the Czechoslovak Bata Shoe Company built a new life and new industrial community in a remote part of Ontario in the town called Batawa. After describing this group adventure, the author discusses the problems of industry today and tomorrow. It is his belief that the home of twentieth century man has been created and moulded by modern industry, which has broken down the geographic isolation of states and nations. The main problem of war and peace in this age is the problem of free industrial community and the free man in the industry. Mr. Cekota offers many positive ideas toward the solution of these fundamental problems, and a glowing tribute to his adopted country, Canada, in a chapter entitled: A Country Worth Defending.

In Peace Prepared by Andrew B. Godefroy Pdf

The Allies claimed victory at the end of the Second World War, but the United States' invention of the atomic bomb and its replication by the Soviet Union posed new dangers for all nations. This book examines what Canada's Cold War Army did to prepare for nuclear war – and why and how it did it. Although the war never materialized, officers, scientists, engineers, and designers developed a collaborative and systematic approach to problem solving that not only transformed the organization of Canada's army but also influenced how armies in the Western Alliance related to one another during the Cold War and beyond.

A Military History of the Cold War, 1962–1991 by Jonathan M. House Pdf

Study of the Cold War all too often shows us the war that wasn’t fought. The reality, of course, is that many “hot” conflicts did occur, some with the great powers' weapons and approval, others without. It is this reality, and this period of quasi-war and semiconflict, that Jonathan M. House plumbs in A Military History of the Cold War, 1962–1991, a complex case study in the Clausewitzian relationship between policy and military force during a time of global upheaval and political realignment. This volume opens a new perspective on three fraught decades of Cold War history, revealing how the realities of time, distance, resources, and military culture often constrained and diverted the inclinations or policies of world leaders. In addition to the Vietnam War and nuclear confrontations between the USSR and the United States, this period saw dozens of regional wars and insurgencies fought throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Cuba, Pakistan, Indonesia, Israel, Egypt, and South Africa pursued their own goals in ways that drew the superpowers into regional disputes. Even clashes ostensibly unrelated to the politics of East-West confrontation, such as the Nigerian-Biafran conflict, the Falklands/Malvinas War, and the Indonesian occupation of East Timor, involved armed forces, weapons, and tactics developed for the larger conflict and thus come under House’s scrutiny. His study also takes up nontraditional or specialized aspects of the period, including weapons of mass destruction, civil-military relations, civil defense, and control of domestic disorders. The result is a single, integrated survey and analysis of a complex period in geopolitical history, which fills a significant gap in our knowledge of the organization, logistics, operations, and tactics involved in conflict throughout the Cold War.

Battle for the North Atlantic by John Bruning Pdf

The Battle of the North Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign of World War II, running from 1939 until the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, though it reached its peak from mid-1940 through the end of 1943. The Battle of the North Atlantic pitted German U-boats and other warships of the German navy against Allied merchant shipping. Initially, convoys of merchant ships were protected for the most part by the British and Canadian navies and air forces. Starting in the early fall of 1941, before Pearl Harbor, these forces were aided by ships and aircraft of the United States. The Battle for the North Atlantic began on the first day of the European war and lasted for six years, involving thousands of ships and stretching over hundreds of miles of the vast ocean and seas in a succession of more than a hundred convoy battles and as many as a thousand single-ship encounters. Tactical advantage switched back and forth over the six years as new weapons, tactics, and countermeasures were developed by both sides. The Allies gradually gained the upper hand, driving the German surface raiders from the ocean by the end of 1942 and decisively defeating the U-boats in a series of convoy battles between March and May 1943.
