Foreign Park by Jeff Steudel Pdf

Foreign Park situates itself in an epoch where prior assurances of the natural world's solidity begin to slip. Poisons enter the Fraser River Basin. An oil slick approaches by night engulfing a fishing vessel, leaving its captain in open waters. Page after page, Foreign Park makes strange with its inhabitants. As it unfolds, it plots itself along the Fraser River overlaying myth and historicity with present day. These calm poems detail the effects of destruction on land and simultaneously explore family and community in Vancouver's coastal cityscape. Foreign Park guides through subtle shifts in temperature and elevation in order to engage with questions on death, ageing, family and fidelity."Jeff Steudel's Foreign Park measures an immediate world through the palpable juxtapositions of the local, what's close to hand, organic flashes of the day's objects that can be touched. The 'foreignicity' of his poetic park reveals the paradox of where and how we live, that in-between margin in the world where we 'don't need to know everything' and Every five minutes together [is] a new world. These poems shimmer in their aliveness." (Fred Wah)

In doing this, we invite readers to consider Hispanic-Canadian literature as Canadian literature, beyond the confines of Magical Realism, the official English-French bilingual model, and to see yourself in these pages. Literary Nonfiction. Fiction. Latinx Studies. Art.

On This Patch of Grass by Matt Hern,Selena Couture,Daisy Couture,Sadie Couture Pdf

Exclusive online content, photos, and more, available here Parks are importantly fertile places to talk about land. Whether its big national parks, provincial campgrounds, isolated conservation areas, destination parks, or humble urban patches of grass, we tend to speak of parks as unqualified goods. People think of parks as public or common land, and it is a common belief that parks are the best uses of land and are good for everyone. But no park is innocent. Parks are lionized as “natural oases,” and urban parks as “pure nature” in the midst of the city — but that’s absurd. Parks are as “natural” as the roads or buildings around them, and just as political. Every park in North America is performing modernity and settler colonialism everyday. Furthermore, parks are not private property, but while they are called ‘public’, they are highly regulated spaces that normatively demand and closely control behaviours. Parks are a certain kind of property, and thus creations of law, and they are subject to all kinds of presumptions about what parks are for, and what kinds of people should be doing what kinds of things in them. Parks — as they are currently constituted — are colonial enterprises. On This Patch of Grass is an investigation into one small urban park — Vancouver’s Victoria Park, or Bocce Ball Park — as a way to interrogate the politics of land. The authors grapple with the fact that they are uninvited guests on the occupied and traditional territories of the Musqueam (xwməθkwəy̓əm), Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh), and Tsleil-Waututh (səliľwətaʔɬ) nations. But Bocce Ball Park is also a wonderful place in many ways, with a startling plurality of users and sovereignties, and all kinds of overlapping activities and all kinds of overlapping people co-existing more-or-less peaceably. It is a living exhibition of the possibilities of sharing land and perhaps offers some clues to a decolonial horizon. The book is a collaborative exercise between one white family and some friends looking at the park from a variety of perspectives, asking what we might say about this patch of grass, and what kinds of occupation might this place imply.

Space Packed by Rafi Segal Pdf

Alfred Neumann (1900-1968) was a Czech architect whose work was wrought in the context of postwar modernism and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Today, his influence and impact have been largely forgotten, but, in their time, Neumann's original designs received praise and elicited controversy in almost equal measure, offering exciting new possibilities to the modernist mainstream. Space Packed renews attention to this pioneering architect who made a vast contribution to modern architecture and had a lasting impact on Israel's broader architectural culture. Drawing on Neumann's writings and close study of both built and unbuilt projects, Rafi Segal discusses the development of Neumann's architectural theory and methodology and documents his built works from the 1950s and '60s against the backdrop of contemporary architectural discourse and the demands of the newly created State of Israel. The book also features a complete, chronological catalog of Neumann's buildings and designs, fully illustrated, including many previously unpublished photographs, drawings, and sketches. The first book to provide a detailed account of Neumann's work, Space Packed celebrates the career of this highly skilled and innovative architect, and it will be welcomed by architects and architectural historians.

A model's relevance, anglais by Benoit Jallon Pdf

In the 19th century, Paris underwent profound transformations above and below ground, from the city center to its outskirts. Georges Eugène Haussmann, Prefect of the Seine from 1853 to 1870, embodies this entire century of public works that continue to shape the city?s organization and identity. Paris Haussmann explores and analyzes the characteristics of this homogenous yet polymorphous cityscape, the result of a lengthy process of changes and evolutions, even in recent times. Research was conducted at all levels to classify and compare roadways, identify public spaces, and organize the blocks and buildings according to their current geometry. For the first time, the qualities of the Haussmann model have been set forth to show how they grapple with the challenges that contemporary cities face.0Rich illustrative material, photographs, various plans and maps, floor plans and sections, axonometric projections, diagrams and other graphics, and statistical analyzes complement topical essays. The book is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Pavillon de l?Arsenal in Paris in spring 2017.00Exhibition: Pavillon de l'Arsenal, Paris, France (31.01. - 07.05.2017).

When Canada created a Dominion Parks Branch in 1911, it became the first country in the world to establish an agency devoted to managing its national parks. Over the past century this agency, now Parks Canada, has been at the center of important debates about the place of nature in Canadian nationhood and relationships between Canada s diverse ecosystems and its communities."
