The Pocket Book of Backyard Experiments by Helen Pilcher Pdf

A handy, charmingly designed book filled with more than eighty experiments for the whole family--discover, learn, and enjoy a better understanding of basic garden science. From testing garden soil to making a homemade battery out of a potato, this book reveals the hidden science at work in the garden and around the house. The book is divided into four sections, each focusing on one area: biology, soil science, botany, and "kitchen sink" chemistry. Each experiment is straightforward and easy, involving no more than common household items. Learn how to germinate seeds with little more than envelopes and used egg cartons or amaze friends with the art of optical illusion. While learning how to create a homemade ant farm or making a pressed herbarium specimen, kids get grounded in the basic principles of science. The experiments have been designed as participatory learning activities that bring kids and family members together with the aim of developing young people's learning skills, interest in science, and the world around them.

Women and the Natural Sciences in Edwardian Britain by Peter Ayres Pdf

This book tells the story of how women first fought for inclusion among scientific societies in Edwardian Britain. Though educational opportunities in schools and universities were improving, there were few fellowships or chances of paid employment in the sciences. Excluded from most scientific societies, women were deprived of not just the chance to share their scientific experiences with other enthusiasts but of mixing with and impressing potential employers. Barriers were overcome in many cases, but not in all. This book will explore the lives of individual women who were brave pioneers and by the outbreak of WWI had proved that they were the equals of men. Many at the heart of the struggle within the sciences were also involved in the fight for suffrage, their success in the sciences helping to change men's attitudes towards women.

Culture and Commerce in Conrad's Asian Fiction by Andrew Francis Pdf

Andrew Francis' Culture and Commerce in Conrad's Asian Fiction is the first book-length critical study of commerce in Conrad's work. It reveals not only the complex connections between culture and commerce in Conrad's Asian fiction, but also how he employed commerce in characterization, moral contexts, and his depiction of relations at a point of advanced European imperialism. Conrad's treatment of commerce - Arab, Chinese and Malay, as well as European - is explored within a historically specific context as intricate and resistant to traditional readings of commerce as simple and homogeneous. Through the analysis of both literary and non-literary sources, this book examines capitalism, colonialism and globalization within the commercial, political and social contexts of colonial Southeast Asia.

Laboratory Practice for Beginners in Botany (Classic Reprint) by William A. Setchell Pdf

Excerpt from Laboratory Practice for Beginners in Botany In order to make the study of botany more effective under the first head, it seems best to bring the student into imme diate contact with the object itself, in the laboratory; and not only that, but to avoid interposing apparatus, as far as possible, between the student and the object to be studied. For this purpose, the writer has practically confined his attention to the larger plants. Desiring also to cultivate, as far as possible, the ability to draw correct inferences from exact observations, the writer has deemed it best to consider the subject from a somewhat different point of view from that usually adopted, and has attempted to make the morphological study bear fruit in this direction. The great difficulty in most laboratory work is to make the students realize the significance of the morphological details. They may observe accurately and record their observations carefully, but what of that? The physiological significance is overlooked - even in many cases where experiments are used to illustrate physiological phenomena. That the plant is a living thing, is a fact that must be borne actively in mind, both by teacher and by student. The plant must obtain the materials for its support, and to do this it must compete with other plants; it must protect itself against or seek the aid of animals it must obtain the energy and materials to reproduce its kind, and endeavor to place its offspring where they may have a proper chance for development; and, destitute of a mind as it is, it exercises an ingenuity, so to speak, that is of no mean order. We must, then, think of the plant as a living, working, struggling being with a single object in life, viz. To reproduce its kind and every variation in structure, be it great or little, is to be examined to determine, if possible, its use or history. Enlightenment, Modernity and Science by Paul A. Elliot Pdf

Scientific culture was one of the defining characteristics of the English Enlightenment. The latest discoveries were debated in homes, institutions and towns around the country. But how did the dissemination of scientific knowledge vary with geographical location? What were the differing influences in town and country and from region to region? Enlightenment, Modernity and Science provides the first full length study of the geographies of Georgian scientific culture in England. The author takes the reader on a tour of the principal arenas in which scientific ideas were disseminated, including home, town and countryside, to show how cultures of science and knowledge varied across the Georgian landscape. Taking in key figures such as Erasmus Darwin, Abraham Bennett, and Joseph Priestley along the way, it is a work that sheds important light on the complex geographies of Georgian English scientific culture.
