VI SOCRATES: I think that we ought to stress that we will write only about things that we have first hand experience in, in a coherent way that will be useful to engineers and other scientists and stressing the formulation without being too mathematical. We should write with integrity and honesty, giving reference to other authors where reference is due, but avoiding mentioning everybody just to be certain that our book is widely advertised. Above all, the book should be clear and useful. PLATO: I think we should include a good discussion of fundamental ideas, of how integral equations are formed, pointing out that they are like two dimensional shadows of three dimensional objects, ... SOCRATES: Stop there! Remember you are not 'the' Plato! PLATO: Sorry, I was carried away. ARISTOTLE: I think that the book should have many applications so that the reader can learn by looking at them how to use the method. SOCRATES: I agree. But we should be careful. It is easy to include many illustra tions and examples in a book in order to disguise its meagre contents. All examples should be relevant. ARISTOTLE: And we should also include a full computer program to give the reader if so he wishes, a working experience of the technique.

Electrical Engineering Applications by Carlos A. Brebbia Pdf

The application of BEM in all fields of engineering and science has progressed at an accelerate rate since the first book on the method appeared in the late seventies. In particular the advantages of BEM for potential problems are essential to solve a whole range of electrical engineering problems. Previous volumes in this series have focussed on the state of the art in other fields while this volume discusses only problems related to electrical engineering. The book reviews a series of important applications such as the design of semiconductor devices and their thermal analysis. The following two chapters concentrate on the study of galvanic corrosion and cathodic protection. Chapter 4 deals with the design of capacitance transducers. The next three chapters concentrate on the applications of the method to simulate electrochemical problems with special reference to Plating Process. The last chapter in the book discusses the case of inverse problems in electrical engineering and presents some applications including their use in tomography.

Electromagnetic Fields in Electrical Engineering by A. Savini,J. Turowski Pdf

This book is the collection of the contributions offered at the International Symposium on Electromagnetic Fields in Electrical Engineering, ISEF '87, held in Pavia, Italy, in September 1987. The Symposium was attended by specialists engaged in both theoretical and applied research in low-frequency electromagnetism. The charming atmosphere of Pavia and its ancient university provided a very effective environment to discuss the latest results in the field and, at the same time, to enjoy the company or colleagues and friends coming from over 15 countries. The contributions have been grouped into 7 chapters devoted to fundamental problems, computer programs, transformers, rotating electrical machines, mechanical and thermal effects, various applications and synthesis, respectively. Such a classification is merely to help the reader because a few papers could be put in several chapters. Over the past two decades electromagnetic field computations have received a big impulse by the large availability of digital computers with better and better performances in speed and capacity. Many various methods have been developed but not all of them appear convenient enough for practical engineering use. In fact, the technical and industrial challenges set some principal attributes and criteria for good computation methods. They should be relatively easy to use, fit into moderately sized computers, yield useful design data, maintain flexibility with m1n1mum cost in time and effort.

Boundary Elements and Other Mesh Reduction Methods XXXIV by C.A. Brebbia,D. Poljak Pdf

This book contains papers presented at the Thirty Fourth International Conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods (BEM/MRM), recognised as the international forum for the latest advances of these methods and their applications in science and engineering. The success of the meeting, since the first conference took place in Southampton, UK, in 1978, is an indication of the strength of the research being carried out by many different groups around the world. This continuous growth is a result of the evolution of the techniques from methods based on classical integral equations to techniques now covering a wide variety of mathematical approaches, the main objective of which is to reduce or eliminate the mesh. The mesh, a concept inherited from more primitive methods, such as finite differences and finite elements, is alien to the solution of the problem and dictated only by the limitations of first generation analysis techniques. Topics covered include: Advanced meshless and mesh reduction methods, Electrical engineering and electromagnetics, Fluid flow, Heat and mass transfer, Advanced structural applications, Dynamics and vibrations, Damage mechanics and fracture, Material characterisation, Advanced formulations, Computational techniques, Stochastic modelling, Emerging applications.

Finite Element Methods in Electrical Power Engineering by A. B. J. Reece,T. W. Preston Pdf

This book is designed to give the theoretical foundation needed by the new user of finite elements in electrical power engineering, and shows how the equipment designer can benefit from finite element analysis. It is divided into three parts; theory, modelling, and application of the finiteelement method. The first part outlines relevant electromagnetics, including treatment of boundaries, saturation and permanent magnets. It also shows how the finite element equations can be formulated. The presentation throughout is aimed at giving the reader a physical understanding of the process. The second part deals with special aspects of finite element modelling of engineering problems, including problem formulation, data generation and post processing and emphasises the importance of engineering judgement. The final part is an assembly of 'real' magnetic and electric field problemssolved by finite elements, including application to turbine generators, permanent magnet machines, switched reluctance drives, induction motors, transformers and bushings.
