Colonial Empires Compared by Bob Moore,Henk van Nierop Pdf

During the seventeenth century, the Dutch and English emerged as the world's leading trading nations, building their prosperity largely upon their maritime successes. During this period both nations strongly contested for maritime supremacy and colonial dominance, yet by the nineteenth century, it was Britain who had undoubtedly come out on top of this struggle, with a navy that dominated the seas and an empire of unparalleled size. This volume examines the colonial development of these two nations at a crucial period in which the foundations for the modern nineteenth and twentieth century imperial state were laid. The volume consists of ten essays (five by British and five by Dutch scholars) based on papers originally delivered to the Fourteenth Anglo-Dutch Historical Conference, 2000. The essays are arranged into five themes which take a strongly comparative approach to explore the development of the British and Dutch colonial empires in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These themes examine the nature of Anglo-Dutch relations, the culture of imperialism and perceptions of the overseas world, the role of sea power in imperial expansion, the economics of colonial expansion and the extension of the metropolitan state to the colonies. Taken together, these essays form an important collection which will greatly add to the understanding of the British and Dutch colonial empires, and their relative successes and failures.

Britain and Regional Cooperation in South-East Asia, 1945-49 (RLE Modern East and South East Asia) by Tilman Remme Pdf

This book, first published in 1995, traces the attempt by the British Foreign Office to establish an international regional organisation in South-East Asia which would allow Britain to dominate the region politically, economically and militarily. The author explores the changing emphasis of Britain's regional policies and puts the issues affecting South-East Asia in the post-War period into a wide context. He explores events in the light of the Japanese defeat in the Second World War, the Communist struggle for supremacy of China, the development of Anglo-American relations in Asia and the beginnings of the Cold War.

Britain, Southeast Asia and the Onset of the Cold War, 1945-1950 by Nicholas Tarling Pdf

This detailed study throws light on the evolution of British policy in South-east Asia in the turbulent post-war period. Through extensive archival research and insightful analysis of the British mindset and official policy, Tarling demonstrates that South-east Asia was perceived as a region consisting of mutually co-operating new states, rather than a fragmented mass. The book covers the immediate post-war period until the Colombo plan and the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. A companion volume to Tarling's Britain, Southeast Asia and the Onset of the Pacific War, it finds parallels between Britain's approach to the threat of Japan and its approach to the threat of communism. It also shows that the British sought to shape US involvement, in part by involving other Commonwealth countries, especially India. This is a major contribution to the diplomatic and political history of South-east Asia.

The Fall of Imperial Britain in South-East Asia by Nicholas Tarling Pdf

This book brings two lines of investigation together. One investigation is into what might be called the decline and fall of the British empire. The book seeks to analyse the nature of Britain's influence in the world at the height of its power in the nineteenth century and the reasons for its decline. It is particularly concerned with the attitudes that Britain developed, which affected its approach to the interests of other powers and to the emergence of nationalism. The other investigation the book undertakes is into the policies the British adopted in South-East Asia from the late eighteenth century onwards. Most historians of the British empire have concentrated on India, Africa, or the settler dominions. The author aims to bring South-East Asia into that discourse, and he believes that doing so will also make for a fuller understanding of the emergence of new South-East Asian states in the twentieth century. The book will be of interest to historians of the British empire and South-East Asia. More generally it may also interest students of imperialism and world politics.

How the Old World Ended by Jonathan Scott Pdf

A magisterial account of how the cultural and maritime relationships between the British, Dutch and American territories changed the existing world order – and made the Industrial Revolution possible Between 1500 and 1800, the North Sea region overtook the Mediterranean as the most dynamic part of the world. At its core the Anglo-Dutch relationship intertwined close alliance and fierce antagonism to intense creative effect. But a precondition for the Industrial Revolution was also the establishment in British North America of a unique type of colony – for the settlement of people and culture, rather than the extraction of things. England’s republican revolution of 1649–53 was a spectacular attempt to change social, political and moral life in the direction pioneered by the Dutch. In this wide-angled and arresting book Jonathan Scott argues that it was also a turning point in world history. In the revolution’s wake, competition with the Dutch transformed the military-fiscal and naval resources of the state. One result was a navally protected Anglo-American trading monopoly. Within this context, more than a century later, the Industrial Revolution would be triggered by the alchemical power of American shopping
